Does anyone here watch any of the series on TBS? I haven’t seen any threads for any of them and thought we could lump them all together into one.
I thought the first season of “Wrecked” was hilarious, but maybe that’s because I was a big fan of Lost, which it is obviously poking fun at. The episode with the mystery briefcase that turned out to be full of sex toys had me in stitches. I’ve missed a few episodes of S2 and need to get caught up.
I’ve also been enjoying the new series “The Guest Book”, done by the same guy who did “My Name Is Earl” and “Raising Hope”. (Greg Garcia must really have a thing for strip clubs named “Chubby’s”. )
I haven’t seen “People of Earth” but the promos look funny. Is that one worth checking out?
Interesting! I have not even heard of any of them except “People of Earth” and “Search Party.”
According to Wikipedia, their shows are:
Angie Tribeca (2016)
The Detour (2016)
People of Earth (2016)
Wrecked (2016)
Search Party (2016)
The Guest Book (2017)
I’ve watched “Search Party” and “People of Earth.” Both are humorous, better than some other shows on broadcast TV like “American Housewife” but more low-key and quick-witted. Or “I can’t believe they did that!” funny.
I’ve heard good things about “Angie Tribeca” but haven’t gotten around to it yet.
I really enjoyed “The Detour”, more so the first season when you didn’t really know what to expect. The kids were phenomenal. We use Fistbump Awkward all the time.
“Angie Tribeca” is great, along the lines of “Police Squad”. Some shows need you to watch the screen ALL THE TIME to get the jokes.
“Search Party” was interesting, a pretty dark comedy. Yuppies on a cause. There’s a second season coming up and I’m not sure where they’ll go.
I liked the first season of “Wrecked” but the second season seemed repetitious so I’ve stopped watching that.
“Guest Book” looks just a little too quirky. I thought Danny Pudi was going to be in every episode, but he was just a guest star.
“The Guest Book” is sort of an anthology series. The setting is this little vacation resort and the main story each week centers around the people renting a particular cabin, and writing about their experience in the guest book. Those are the guest stars, like Dani Pudi. But there are ongoing story arcs about the owner and his wife, the local strip club (where the owner videotapes customers and then tried to blackmail them) and a divorced guy with a kid who either lives at the resort or just next door. And each episode dovetails into the next – as one set of guests is leaving, the next group arrives.
So far I’m enjoying it. It has the same quirky feel as “Earl” and “Hope”, and a few of the same actors show up.
I really loved The Detour. It cracked me up. Angie Tribeca is a lot of fun if you like incredibly groan inducing puns (I do) and general silliness. People of Earth is odd and fun. I’ve been meaning to watch The Guest Book, but I haven’t caught it yet.
I like some of their shows, like The Detour (which goes in some crazy directions) and Wrecked but didn’t care for Angie Tribeca, which seemed to be trying too hard. The Guest Book is interesting enough and weirdly there’s a new show on HBO called Room 104 with a similar sort of premise.
I think I would have murdered nearly all my fellow passengers if I was stranded on Wrecked. Yet I keep coming back to watch it, maybe hoping that one of them will do something smart. But like every comedy in the last 10 (20? More?) years, they just keep getting stupider and more banal by the episode, and they were pretty f’n stupid and banal in the first episode.
Angie Tribeca is a throwback to Police Squad. It’s a stupid that I thoroughly enjoy. I liked The Detour first season, but never really got into the second season. I’m about 4 episodes in, and keep thinking I’ll go back. Maybe. People of Earth - meh after about 4 episodes. I do want to watch The Guest Book, just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Greg Garcia shows are awesome.
Addendum: I heard of Angie Tribeca through this board. I discovered Search Party when I saw quinces on sale at the supermarket and that made me think: “I wonder if Rosie Perez is still acting?”
I finished watching “The Detour” and “Wrecked” and I liked them both. I like shows that are funny but also have a plot arc to them, and 10-13 episode seasons are about the right size for me in terms of keeping my attention.
