New Star trek Trailer

Sure there is. It could not suck.

(Btw, of course I can handle Sylar as Spock; it’s just jarring at first.)

Ooh! Ooh! waves hand Ooh! I have an idea!

Why don’t you all watch the film and judge it on its own terms, instead of caring about all this canon shit?

Not to mention the outstanding Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, which was essentially a long-lost Horatio Hornblower spec script reworked for Star Trek, right down to two ships trying to find each other in the fog so they can blast the shit out of each other at close range. Not every Star Trek story needs to be City on the Edge of Forever. Sometimes we’re just happy with Captain Picard gunning down the Borg with a tommygun, or Sulu and Kirk hammering a Klingon warship into scrap metal with torpedo salvos.

And sometimes, we’re happy with Scotty talking to a computer mouse. We’re a weird lot.

That said, I do hope they throw in a good adventure/exploration plot with the action/explosions plot. I was doubtful about this movie during the trailer right up until they played the Red Alert sound effect, at which point Pavlov’s Geek took over.

Where’s the fun in that?

You really don’t understand geeks, do you?

Ah, but I do understand exploring the minutiae after the fact. But not prejudging from speculation based on nothing.

There seems to be a very vocal segment of Trek fans out there (and I suppose in any long-running fandom) who just don’t seem to want to accept that movie-going audiences don’t care a bit about canon. This apparently causes massive frothing at the mouth of die-hard fans. I’m seeing it a bit here and much more so on other forums. This movie has never billed itself as anything other than a reboot, and a reboot means that things are going to change. A movie made today that had the look and sensibilities as the television show of the 1960’s is just asking to be a total financial melt-down.

I’m a trekkie from before I was born, especially TOS. I’ve gone to conventions, made the uniforms, put together the models, and built my own props. And I accept that the Trek universe needed a bit of updating to meet modern tastes. It’s not the end, but rather a reincarnation. The trailer looks like fun, and I’m looking forward to the film.

Seriously, what’s up with that? This looks a lot like Will Smith riding a “vintage” motorcycle in I, Robot. Seriously, isn’t this movie supposed to be set in the 23rd century? It’s like having a trailer for a film set in the present day start with a highway trooper chasing some guy in a horse chariot.

It looks good, saw the trailer when DH and I saw Q of S, (which rocks so hard, btw) and I went straight to the computer when we got home to see it on appletrailers again, it wasn’t there yet.

Still, one complaint that has nothing to do with canon or effects, it looks like it will feel like “Star Trek for teens” to me, like it’s aimed at today’s MTV audience and that will make me feel old and I don’t like feeling old. :frowning:

From the bit we could see in the trailer, all the casting looks right on to me, maybe not so great for Spock, but I’ll give final judgement after seeing whole movie. Can’t wait!

Looks like Spock and Kirk are seriously in love in this trailer.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Sorry mate - had a terrible afternoon, and when I reread what I posted, it sounded really rude.

My apologies all.

Well, for Will Smith’s character, the old school stuff was pretty integral to his character. He hated new things. The fact that old things for him include stuff from the 21st century is just a sort of sci-fi way of looking at it. It’s not a huge problem to me to think that a young James T Kirk might look at a truly classic sports car and think “Man, I’d love to drive that.”

The fact that he is evidently a terrible driver is actually keeping in canon, if you’ll recall.

Movie stills. This looks to be spacediving on Mars. Now, that could be interesting.

Bahaha, caption win: The one bridge shot they have without Sulu at the helm, the caption reads “That’s not Sulu at the helm! DAMN YOU JJ!”

I know, right? I’ve been asking that question since I first saw Wrath of Khan. “Why would Captain Kirk want old-timey reading glasses? Seriously, this movie is supposed to be in the 23rd Century. Why doesn’t he just get eye surgery if his eyes are so bad?”

What was McCoy’s stupid reasoning for giving such an idiotic present anyway? And that reminds me, didn’t Kirk’s living quarters have a bunch of dumb “relics” (ie, 20th century junk) on the walls? I hope some stupid set designer got fired for that!

Seriously, when they don’t pay attention to canon, people get angry. When they make decisions that clearly fit right in with canon, people get angry.

I’ve watched this trailer about 100 times, and every time I do, I squee with excitement. It looks awesome. It feels right. TOS was always about explorers. The pioneers and cowboys going out to settle a hostile land. It should be full of adventure and fights and action. I mean, we all sort of remember Kirk has a swaggering, sex-crazed maniac (and he was!), but let’s also remember that he was wicked smart and knew how to kick some serious ass in battle. That’s what I want to see–kicking ass and taking names and swaggering even when he’s standing still.

Assuming that all of the material used to build the ship comes from Earth, it’s conceivable that the equation favours building it on the planet surface.

I’ve been aboard warships that were assembled from pre-fabricated parts shipped from in-land factories (although it was after my time in the Navy). I have seen assembly lines that put many thousands of parts together to make nuclear imaging machines, simply because it cannot be done accurately enough by hand (the production volumes were not a factor in automation). I’m more than confident that robotic assembly of devices with the complexity of starships will be an ancient and reliable art in five hundred years.

Of course, it could just be that the hullplate welding is done in a Union Workshop, and the whole robot thing is in negotiation along with holodental plans.

Well, it’s nice to know they are keeping one thing the same from TOS.

Kirk was allergic to the medication used to correct the eye problem.

Flintlock pistols, and Kirk has a “fondness for antiques.”

Where’s an example of them doing something which fits into canon that pisses people off?

Wooooooooooosh.

I’m guessing?

The thing is, they’re not trying to pay attention to canon to make the people who are interested in canon happy. They never have been.

Honestly, those people are not their target audience. They are their captive audience. They can be counted on to go see the film, even if word-of-mouth on it is bad.

The people they are trying to get into movie seats are the “average moviegoer”. The guarantee of the fans always showing up is what lowers the risk of the movie enough to get it made. The run-of-the-mill moviegoers showing up is what makes the movie a success.

So all the wiffling over canon violations is a bit silly. They know canon does not matter to the important audience, so what they think will make a better movie will trump sticking to canon every time.
