I was wondering why the Board was showing me as having most recently visited at 09:30 today when I haven’t been here for days.
Seems when I type ‘st’ into the address bar (is that what it’s called??) my browser (Safari) thinks I’m coming here and autofills the rest of the SDMB url. What I have been trying to do is log on to my bank (St George Bank). Even though I haven’t actually visited the SDMB, the fact that my browser has suggested this site after my typing only ‘st’ appears to be a problem.
This doesn’t happen with any other website apart from this one.
I’m not all that familiar with Safari, but most browsers don’t send any sort of requests to the web site just because it autocompleted it in the address bar. On a PC you generally have to hit Enter and on a phone or tablet you press Go or whatever button your device uses. Does Safari also try to do a preview of the page when it autocompletes?
No to your last question. It’s really weird because every other site I visit doesn’t record me as having been there just because I typed the first two letters of the url. I’m not about to change my bank, so I guess this means the SDMB will continue to show many/most threads as ‘read’ unless I go to the SDMB just before I do my banking.
I seem to remember there being a Chrome option at one point for pre-fetching pages based on completion, to provide better perceived load time. I turned that off back when we were having the worst of our “zap” problems, in case it was relevant. It didn’t help…but something like that could be in play here.
I assume it’s the new ads down at the bottom of the page, but this site is completely unusable on my iPhone now. I only see a very minor effect on my Mac, but I don’t even try on the phone anymore.
Knock on wood…hasn’t hit me yet. And I was getting it as bad as anyone back then.
To be fair, I’m not actually online here nearly as much as before, so my usage patterns might impact that.
jabiru, have you actually confirmed the timing connection to when you tried to log onto your bank, or are you just assuming the autofill is what is causing the link? Because this site has long had issues with keeping track of when you last visited.
