I very much doubt Pegg is going to burst out with an exaggerated Scottish accent. For one thing, he’s a serious actor. Yes, he’s a funny guy, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to act. For another thing, his wife is Scottish, and he’s stated that she’s been helping him and coaching him. His accent is going to be fine. In fact, I’d predict that he’s going to be one of the best things about the film.
I sincerely hope so. Maybe that picture just caught him at a bad moment, but he looks to me like he’s just barely biting back a “Hoot mon!” It may just be my imagination though. Happy thoughts. Happy thoughts…
On reflection, Doohan himself didn’t exactly play Scotty with grim seriousness. As long as Pegg doesn’t cross the on-so-fuzzy line into being irritating, he’ll be okay.
He can be hard-drinkin’ and bellyachin’ and still be Scotty, I figure. Just don’t be Jar-Jarrin’ on us.
You all might be interested in the Entertainment Weekly article that accompanies the release of these pics. JJ Abrams addresses some of the concerns here, so there are some sort-of-almost spoilers in it, though nothing we wouldn’t pick up in the trailer, I don’t think (which will be attached to Quantum of Solace, incidentally). I’m not sure if the affronted fans here will be happy with all his explanations, but some of them should assuage you.
Oh, good.
Thanks! I now understand it’s a re-boot, and not just “Starfleet Academy.” I’m totally cool with that.
As a lifelong ST fan (but one who is aware of the nerdiness inherent there-in) all I can say is this:
Its a story!! Its not real!
The bridge on TOS was not a real spaceship’s bridge, but a TV set meant to represent one. Same as with the actors. So just sit back, relax, and watch the established characters (all of whom are being played by actors who resemble the originals more than enough) go thru new adventures! Bridge’s different? Who cares! You know absolutely none of it is real anyway!
The only thing real about the whole franchise are the actual emotions they’ve evoked in their viewers. And from what I’ve seen so far I think Abrams take is absolutely perfect. After the first 5 minutes I think that the new sets, ships, and actors will all perfectly represent the futuristic things, locations, and most of all, the characters that they’re supposed to. No problem.
And I think it’ll be a huge hit because of this!
I like the gay synth pop thing they got going there with spock. Goes great with the shiny set.
Liek all trekkies Ill probably whine, but Ill still go watch it. Lets face it. They could film a claymation version and people would still go if it was called star trek.
You take that back!
Though apparently they do have handlebars to grab if things get shakey.
Where’s Captain Pike?
Captain Pike does actually appear in the film, played by Bruce Greenwood.
I know that. That’s why I asked — where is he?
Well, along with about fifty other miscellaneous characters, just not shown yet. You expect the entire cast to be revealed in the first photos?
No. Captain Pike, yes.
Ah yes, Captain Pike. The Trekkie Shibboleth.
Heretic. It’s Robert April.
I guess it looks OK. I guess. =Sigh= Why do I have the bad feeling this movie’s gonna be more annoying and cringeworthy than thrilling and exhilarating?
Of course I’ll see it, but… I have my doubts.
I don’t know. Why do you?
