New Vid Format AVCHD

Has anyone tried playing AVCHD files on a computer? It’s a new format closely associated with Blu Ray.

I use GOM to play videos. I think they support AVCHD. But, I’m concerned about how well they play. I’ve had mixed success with Hi Def. Some mkv’s play fine. Others hang and sputter. It depends on the skill of the person that created it.

Any comments or experiences would be appreciated.

They play fine on my computer, which is a Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz Mac Mini with 4GB of RAM. However, it is very processor intensive, so if your computer is any slower than mine, it may be an issue.

When I edit them, I use Quicktime to convert them to Apple ProRes first.

ETA: I use VLC for playback.

I’m looking at getting a digital camera that uses this format for video. Reviews so far say it’s fine, just tough to work with because it’s a new codec, basically.

thanks for the reply.

my Dell laptop has a Intel Core 2 Duo T5500, 1.66GHz with 1 gig RAM
I bought it in August, 2007.

It runs Hi Def 720p MKV’s very well. It may not be fast enough for this new codec.

Amazing how quick processors get obsolete. My laptop is barely 2 years old. I just upgraded the hard drive from 80 Gig to 350 Gig. I plan to add more memory soon.
