New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

That said, even if they’re not doing it maliciously, they’re still breaking the guild’s rules, and I think having a silenced “time out” rank is a very good idea.

Have I mentioned I love being a holy pally? I literally feel like I can kill anything that can’t 1) two-shot me, 2) chain stun me or 3) enrage after five minutes.

Yesterday I solo’d the whole Grizzly Hills arena-gladiator chain. It took a long time, but I finished each round with 100% mana and within one heal of 100% health.

Congratulations! Isn’t it great to be able to do stuff like that? I feel the same way about my DK tank. I sometimes go around picking fights with elites (like Thrym, in Zul’Drak) just because I can. It’s one of the factors that made me main-swap to him from my mage. After feeling so invincible, going back to being squishy felt weird. My mage can hit like a truck, but that doesn’t matter when two shot from a tough mob can turn him into little red spot on the ground.

I think it’s probably an adult vs. teenager thing. I suspect most mature adults — even those who “swear all the fucking time” — are able to make the distinction between “swearing-appropriate” venues and “watch your language” places. I mean, I don’t imagine you, as an adult, would be dropping f-bombs while attending a wedding or funeral in a church, even if you wouldn’t hesitate to use that language elsewhere. And in most workplaces, “Yo, beeyotch! Whose ass do I have to kiss to get a fuckin’ raise around here?” probably isn’t the best way to ask for a pay increase :stuck_out_tongue: It’s really just a matter of learning to tailor your vocabulary to your audience, like not telling gay jokes when there’s a gay person in your group (or even better, not telling them at all because you never know who might be listening).

Though you’re correct - I don’t personally swear a lot. Profanity doesn’t offend me; in fact I’ll use it where/when it’s appropriate. What does offend me is when somebody can’t seem to express themselves any other way, or when it appears that “fuckin’” is the only adjective they know (or people who use “fuckin’” in their conversation the same way most other people use “uh…”)

I blame rap music.

The problem is that when I’m physically in a group of kids, I see the kids. When I’m in gchat, I don’t *see *that the level 65 Mage is really a ten-year-old. I’ve been in the occasional guild that kept gchat PGish (further confused by the fact that Vent was unrated), and I know I slipped more than once.

And in my workplace, I swear not infrequently to certain people, who also swear around me.

It’s all about context. What’s normal for you may not be normal for other people, so you can’t really make assumptions what “should be” easy for them. However, that doesn’t change the fact that your guild *does *have language restrictions and that you *should *enforce them.

Yeah, I’m sort of just looking at it as the difference between speaking a one-syllable word (“easy” and instantaneous) and typing out the same word one letter at a time (you have time to catch yourself, especially if you’re a hunt-and-peck typist [which I realize isn’t necessarily an age issue these days, with kids learning to use a keyboard well before high school]).

Yeah, that’s the key thing. The rule is in the “message of the day”, it’s spelled out in the guild guidelines that are mailed to each new member, and the player in question has been “reminded” several times. He’s either just not “getting it”, or he’s in “nobody tells me what to do” mode.

I do think I may need to talk to the guild leader about modifying the “everybody can /ginvite” policy. Maybe switch to officers-only, and if somebody wants their friend to join they refer them to one of us so that we can talk to them first, tell them what’s up, and then invite them if they agree to the rules.

I sincerely doubt that anybody my age or younger isn’t a touch-typist, and a fast one at that. So, yes, for someone who takes a second or two per key, there’s obviously time for thought. But for someone who types upwards of a word per second, there’s much more of a flow and less post- or during-typing consideration. Hell, there have been times that I’ve typed out more than a few words with *my capslock key on *and hit enter before I noticed and could go back and fix it.

ETA:

Oh and for the love of god take away the universal ginvite. For anything larger than a tiny guild of people who all know each other and are only going to be inviting other friends, there should be tiers to who can give invites. Either make it officers only, or officers and veteran members. But there should definitely be restrictions.

OMG you aren’t kidding. I’ve had super bad latency the last few weeks for no apparent reason. I’m talking like 1000-2000 and up. I try to joust. Basically I stand in one spot mashing buttons doing nothing but getting the shite kicked out of me.

When my latency is good, it’s pretty easy.

And there’s the problem with these kids today. They just don’t have time to think!

Thank you for the welcome also SFG! I’ve been reading this thread for a few months and just got up the nerve to start posting. The last couple days my latency seems to be behaving itself. I’m crossing my fingers. If it starts misbehaving again, I will definitely post here for any ideas and will appreciate very much any suggestions.

When it comes to the technical stuff concerning computers I am not the sharpest tool in the shed for sure. :smack:

I’ve been playing a druid lately. Dual spec’d Balance/Resto. A BoomTree, if you will. The boomkin spec rocks pvp and solo questing. Not bad at dungeon dps, either. The tree is a healing beast. Only 51 at the moment. At 50, did a Sunken Temple run. Tank jumped down in the wrong place. I followed him. No one else jumped. We’re in this round room with lots of dragonkin. He’s getting swarmed, but holding aggro, and I’m slinging heal like a mofo. We ended up duoing about 6 pulls worth of mobs while fighting our way back to the party.

Healing as a tree, at least at this level, is almost ridiculously easy. Stacking both HoTs, refreshing as needed, is often enough for the tank, with a couple of “Oh Shit! Buttons” in reserve.

My latest 80 is a tree healer (resto from 10-80, I wouldn’t recommend it for questing heh). Having done disc priest and holy pally, I’d have to say the tree healing is my favorite so far (ele/resto shammy is my next project). Rolling HoTs in dungeons and battlegrounds is ridiculously effective, and nourish at level 80 makes you practically unstoppable (especially if glyphed). Plus, the tree graphics/animations are just so damn amusing (particularly if you’re packing small feasts). I’m sad that perma treeform is going away in cata.

My priest’s healing mode is holy; way back before there were multiple specs, she was shadow but with talents in renew (please don’t shoot me). She could heal normal level 70 instances on pretty much nothing but renew, back then.

I’m planning on a tree druid at some point, I like HoT healing.

Not having played a shammy for a couple of years, I was quite unhappy to find that they changed Earth Shock so that it no longer interrupts spells. Very unhappy.

I’m just waiting for Cata to come out to roll my goblin resto shammy. Eventually I’d like to have an 80 healer of each class (priest and pally so far) but I just don’t feel the druid love yet. Could be because I’ve never played one, I’m sure.

I also rolled a baby stabby for the first time in probably over two years and was pleasantly surprised to find that thrown weapons are now perpetual (don’t need to be repaired). Boy, I miss all the patch notes that aren’t relevant to whatever I’m playing when the patch comes out…

I feel like I’m improving all the time. I got into a PUG ToC25 run and managed to pull a new axe, a few BS plans, and a Crusader Trophy, so I was a happy clam–that one run (plus some advice from a guy on the run regarding heroic/early-raider shaman gemming) boosted my DPS by nearly 1000.

I had some insomnia last night, so I ended up doing a late-night Wintergrasp fight (wow, I could actually fight in the fortress without being so lagged I couldn’t move - I still was moving at like 2 fps, but I just can’t go near the fortress during peak hours), followed by VoA, since I was at 93 Frost emblems and one away from 4 x T10 in the shadow priest set, which has an incredible bonus. And I not only got my last 2 emblems, I also got my healing T10 pants to drop, meaning that I’m also up to 3 x T10 in Disc. Happy happy even though really I should have been trying to sleep.

In my quest to keep posting to this thread, I will tell how I am real life girly fail. Every time I watch the WotLK loading screen, I realize I’m about as good at parting my hair as Arthas is.

This was a good change. Wind shear is what you use for interrupts. It’s now off the GCD and does not share a cooldown with shocks. Effectively it means you no longer have to save your shock cooldowns for interrupts.
