New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Hmm, my skinnger also picked up a Pristine Hide, which he’s been saving for LW later. But if the market is that hot right now maybe he’s better off selling… I’ll have to check and see what they go for on our server.

Ding 85 on Muz. I will be doing a hell of a lot of writing on Monday so my brain might be burned out, but hopefully I can tank a guild heroic or two.

HAI GUYZ

I’m confused. I’ve never had to ‘discover’ a dungeon before, but I went through what I think is the entirety of Vashj’ir and went into the Throne of Tides. But if I’m correct, I shouldn’t start trying to do anything or take the quests, right? I talked to the Captain and he said ‘you brought friends’ which I didn’t. This just means I can queue up in the RDF for it now.

And thank you for **all ** your help in 2010!

Quasi, Wolkie, DoubleL ("Wollkie), Usumbij and the Silkas!

You can pick up the quests and save em for later, but yeah, you won’t have much luck trying to solo in there

You don’t even have to go inside, walking right up to the instance portal you’ll get a message that says something like “Throne of Tides discovered!” and that’s enough.

I almost had a lovely screencap for y’all. I’m quite happy right now - did regular Throne of Tides for the first time today and I topped the charts on DPS easily. Consistently doing 4k+ DPS. I was going to post the Recount window, but at the very end I got confused when you get powered up and got knocked off the top because I didn’t start attacking immediately.

I’d be stumbling around like lost puppy without you guys to help me out! Thanks!

What’s all this “Y’all” shit all of a sudden, and then the “lost puppy” analogy???

I thought I had the franchise on being maudlin around here!!!

Should have had that shit copyrighted, ah reckon!

kushie’s a hero - just like all o’ y’all!
Congrats on Prince of Tides, buddy! Just don’t drink and/or drive!

From your pal,

Quasi

The login servers are having huge issues; I can’t even get in. But I’m okay with that, because I managed to get Merrymaker before logging out this afternoon. I ended up running a bunch of Arathi Basin to do it, and that was today’s Call to Arms!, so I got the new warlock PvP shoulders.

I do wonder what they’ll do for the people who were counting on tonight to finish the achievement, though.

I suspect they’ll just leave those of us who didn’t finish it in time to finish it next year. We did have a week and a half or so to do it after all.

The login issue was a pain but I got in after 4 or 5 attempts.

I did finally queue for my first heroic - SFK, which was fun to see. We had some trouble with the first boss; folks weren’t interrupting his heal and our second attempt ended with a wipe after 11 (11!) minutes. That’s a bitch to heal too, because he periodically stuns everyone and does about 90% damage. But we got past him and the second boss, who was pretty easy. The third boss stopped us though, and after two more wipes people started dropping. I learned later that apparently that boss can be skipped but no one suggested it.

So a mixed success, but at least I got my feet wet. Hopefully we’ll start doing some guild heroics soon where there will be less pressure and we can learn together.

Heroic Commander Springvale makes me very, very sad. There is very little margin for error even for a decently geared group – and close to impossible for barely-geared people.

We tried this guy several times with guild groups and always got our asses kicked. Then we went to heroic SFK with 4 guildies and got a pug tank who didn’t want to skip it, so we said we’ll give it a try. And somehow it was the easiest boss ever. I’m not sure what happened, maybe the tank was great at dodging whatever AEs he does or something but I (the healer) had plenty of mana when he died and we didn’t even use heroism.

Was my first heroic on my shammy, too. And I got his cloak, whee!

Can I get ‘Hunter traps for dummies’ help? Like I’ve said before, I started playing after everyone got geared up for Wrath, so I’ve never done CC. I’ve just had to pew-pew things and now people are asking me to use traps in the Cata dungeons. I guess my big issue is using the Trap Launcher + a trap - it’s hard to drop a trap right at a specific enemy that’s in a mob. It’s hard to see. Any tips?

Did Stonecore today, we wiped a bajillion times before finally getting it. My poor bank account, the repair bill will be ginormous. But I’m making some niiiice monies off the AH.

You’re probably going to have to pull that mob out of the group. What I would do is poing a freezing trap partway between you and the bunch, then use Distracting Shot to piss off your target and get it to run into the trap. Before it hits the trap, make sure to turn off auto-attack and get your pet off it!

Or better yet, tell your group ahead of time that you will pull with your trap launcher - targeting the stationary mob with the trap launcher reticule. Much easier for you, and other CC’ers shouldn’t have nearly as much trouble as you with CC’ing moving mobs.

But yeah, distracting shot is the canonical answer. Also, remember to re-fire the trap if you’re going to need to re-trap.

I believe someone mentioned before doing the final quest in Vash’jir and ending up about 15 quests short; I had the same thing happen to me last night; wound up circling around the initial zone, looking for exclamation points and killing random mobs to see if anything turned up. I did get a quest from killing the big elite giant (he’s not all THAT elite, at least for an 85); found a quest to destroy some Naga weapon racks; then hit paydirt when I ran into Budd just south of the entry to the first cave. It didn’t really feel like fifteen quests total after I ran some errands for him, but the achievement dinged so something good happened.

Tried pugging another heroic last night and wound up in Lost City. Told the group up front it was my first time on heroic. We had a mage and SV hunter who sheeped/trapped on each trash pull, and they told me before each boss what was different from the regular version. I died on the first boss, but they got him down; we lost 1 dps on the third boss and 2 on the final boss – which I seeming did entirely on 5% mana – but no wipes and I traded in my JP shield (+ Mastery) for the dropped shield (+haste) and got a new ring too, so I was feeling pretty good. And wow, the JPs pile up so much faster in heroic that it shouldn’t take too long to get some more 346 gear.

That last boss is a pain in the butt on normal; I can’t imagine how hard he must be on heroic.

There seemed to be more AoE damage to move out of, and it did a lot of damage quickly. The other challenge was the whirlwind things that toss you around; the reason we lost two DPS is that they got of of my range and I couldn’t get back to them quickly enough (plus, I was trying to conserve mana for the tank).
