New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Much easier to bind your misdirect using clique, tho, at least for me: it works on multitank situations like raids or 1.tank going splat and the retridin remembering he wears plate.

I wouldn’t get clique only for it, but since I got it for the healer…
lizardling, my guild doesn’t have multiple teams but we have multiple runs; we use GEM to sign up and then have a “tag and flag” system where people get priority on 2nd or 3rd runs based on different things. For example, if you were asked to switch chars on day 1 and a similar switch is needed on day 2, the leader will try to ask someone else rather than you; if you have made it clear that you’re going for “giggles and hugs”, you may be asked to let someone who’s gearing up in, but it won’t happen twice in a same week, etc. And of course we also have people with the brain to not sign up for a “day 1” if they’ve already started that raid with another guild, a PUG, etc.

The general assumption is that people want to play the char they’ve signed up with and the spec they’ve signed up with; I’m a bit of an exception in that if I’m coming as “pure DPS” I’d rather bring the hunter than the priest, although I usually sign up with the priest (as healer).

I got it to work, thank you. I made a Shaman and am specialized in healing which is a first for me. Honestly, I don’t think I’d be able to do the job without heal bot or some other aid and healing at low levels isn’t really all that difficult. I just don’t think I could manipulate the keyboard quick enough.

Le sigh. Had to PUG quite a few for our run last night; most of them were at least reasonably competent. One of them we were able to pick up right away–a new Shadow Priest. On the plus side, since they got their server-first LK25-HM kill down, a couple of our raiders who play alts with us while their mains are in the server-top guild will be around a lot more often.

Only had time to get through PP, had to do a few of the fights on easy mode, and H-BQL refused to drop her shield yet again, the bitch.

Well hand yourself a “The More You Know” banner. How do you get both on at once? I’ve always just assumed that you couldn’t, since when you hit V to toggle hostile plates it drops friendlies, and when you hit Shift+V to toggle friendly plates it drops hostiles. New feature? Or something I’ve just missed for years?

The problem with Warcraft lore is that there’s a shit-ton of it, from several RTS games, WoW, books, and comics. And several major bits of it have been retconned and/or time-travel changed at least once or twice. IMO, WoWWiki and the aforementioned WoW Insider Know Your Lore articles really are the best, most concise descriptions you’ll find. Either way, you’ll probably be skipping from article to article, just because everything is sooooooo intertwined.

I would recommend skipping most of the books, especially anything written by Knaack, unless you have a penchant for (or can at least tolerate) abyssmally awful prose.

Ick. Hope you get it figured out. (Although I gotta say, I find it highly unlikely that two conflicting addons on two different computers could possibly do anything to even crash WoW itself, and almost impossible for it to fuck your entire network connection.)

I doubt there are very few truly good healers who don’t use some kind of addon to help them out. I doubt there are even any who use in-game workarounds like pulling out raid frames and using mouseover macros. (Now, mouseover macros plus *Grid *is definitely doable.)

You just broke my parser.

Well last night I still couldn’t get into Cairne, but I was able to get into any other server. So I had a stroke of insight and deleted my WTF folder. Well that worked like a charm – unfortunately, it also seems to have deleted most of my addon customizations. My Autctioneer data was lost; my Grid and Clique settings were back at the default state, and my Bartender action bars were all over the place. :frowning: I managed to get my priest setup again in time to do my randoms and the Burning Dog Raid, but I’m not looking forward to reconfiguring my other alts. And I’ll have to scan the AH more frequently for a while.

I don’t remember the keyboard shortcut for it. I usually sit there hitting V and shift V a bunch until it turns out right. You can also go under options->interface->names and manually click them all on. And I’ve been using it in WG for over a year and a half, so it’s at least that old

Ctrl-V, I’m pretty sure, will turn on both sets. It’s been in there a long time, if not forever.

I know, it’s extremely unlikely to me, too. But I ran two Ahune fights without a problem last night before we queued up, and the difficulties were tied exclusively to that dungeon aside from the other failure just before I made that post. It could have just been exquisite coincidence.

Yeeeeah. Word of advice for the future: back up before deleting. Change the name of the WTF folder to anything else; the Blizzard repair tool just renames the WTF folder with a timestamp (like WTF.20100629100 or something). That’s sufficient for WoW to not recognize it. That way you keep your data while WoW rebuilds the folder.

Just did Ahune today. Once you have the achi what is the reason to run it again? Is it worth 2 emblems per day or only the 1st time? Are there rare drops that you might get a 2nd time around?

2 per day; it’s definitely worth it. It’s probably the easiest and quickest 2 Frost Emblems you’ll pick up. Also, the cloaks that drop are better than anything you’ll get outside of a raid or spending a lot of Frost emblems. Plus, there’s a chance of getting a pet, which is amusing if not at all game-relevant.

Glad to fidn this out. It’s going on my daily rotation for as long as it’s around then. Will givethe cloak I got another look, because it didn’t look that stellar, but maybe I missed soemthing

There are different cloaks; you might have to run it a few times before a good one for you drops. I keep getting melee cloaks which do me no good (although the caster cloak won’t be an upgrade either, I’m just after the emblems).

I think I broke my own. It’s missing a “don’t” before “doubt.”

Yup, all your addon data is stored there. Whenever I need to delete WTF and Cache, I always make backups of the important stuff (addon settings and macros–though I think macros are mainly stored remotely now), which I can then add back.

Check the Wowhead drop list. There’s probably a tanking cloak and a +Str DPS cloak that would both be great for you. (Well, the DPS cloak for your offset, I mean, assuming you have one.)

Hmm, I didn’t empty the recycling bin, so I may be able to recover that Auctioneer data after all. I’m not too worried about the other settings; they needed cleaning up anyway. Macros were not affected.

If you have a friend who uses Auctioneer regularly on the same faction of the same server, you can have them email you their scan data .lua file, too, and just use that.

On my mage’s Ahune run yesterday I took the advice I got on the official forums and focused my fire exclusively on Ahune. Seemed to work - we took him down fairly quickly, and as a bonus I took very little damage.

The priest cloak dropped, and I won the greed roll on it with a roll of 57. Since I didn’t need it (already wearing the iLvl 264 mage cloak purchased with Frosts), I tried to offer it to the priest healer (who rolled a whopping 6, so even if I passed instead of rolled she still wouldn’t have won it), but unfortunately she logged out faster than I could type, “Hey, you want this cloak?” I’m not gonna feel bad about it, though - if she really needed it I guess she would have rolled Need (I didn’t inspect her to see what she was wearing).

Still no Frostscythe :frowning:

After Ahune, my mage queued for her daily random H:Forge of Souls ( :stuck_out_tongue: ), but happily and amazingly, got Culling of Stratholme instead. She loves that place as much as she hates FoS

Question about FoS and the last boss. When the Devourer of Souls casts Mirror Soul, I get a notification, in big blue letters in the middle of my screen: “Mirror Soul - Stop Damage”. Aside from the fact that this seems to always pop up just as one of my spells is going off and I can’t stop it (and it always results in a crit, natch), the trouble I’m having is that I’m not getting any notification as to when it’s safe to start attacking again. I don’t know if Deadly Boss Mods is giving me that notification, or if it’s the game itself; the reason I’m not sure is because DBM usually throws up a countdown/progress bar that shows me when the effect is over on just about every other boss that has one of those effects I’m not supposed to attack during (geez, parse that!). Anybody know exactly how long I need to hold off on the damage after Mirror Soul is cast? Because I’m not getting any indication.

One And Only Wanderers, there are five different cloaks that Ahune can drop.Iif you’re a prot warrior you’ll want the Icebound Cloak. My paladin has been trying to get that one for her offspec.

Anybody else find yesterday’s server maintenance notice confusing? The first paragraph mentioned more of the 24-hour maintenance, then the second paragraph was the “All realms not listed below will be down for scheduled maintenance from 5AM to 11AM” business. So which is it?

DBM should give you a little countdown bar showing how much time is left on Mirrored Soul. It’s a lot smaller than the STOP text, but it should be there near the middle of your screen - just wait till it times out to zero (or start casting Pyroblast a bit earlier).

Well my main has been coming off the shelf for the BDL weekly raids, but I didn’t realize how absolutely poorly geared he was. After checking out guildie Glawen (a recent 80) I need to get to work on emblemming that t-9 gear. Same with my Pally, but he’s stuck between ret and prot. My latest thinking is that I’ve got my Mage for dps, so I should fill out the other roles before doubling up on others. And I’ve got a druid coming up for heals if I want. But back to my mage, I’ve got 50 triumphs and need 80 to make the first swap out. (So I lose one set bonus and gain another)

Stayed home sick yesterday and played a bit. There’s a lot going on in the middle of the day on Cairne. I mean aside from the usual Trade-channel garbage. Queue times were faster than at night.

The Mirrored Soul spell takes 2 seconds to cast and the debuff lasts for 8 seconds, so if you don’t have a timer you can just count to 10 before resuming DPS.

I dropped DBM for DXE, although I’m thinking I ought to turn DBM back on for heroics. DXE only works for raids, and I miss the DBM warnings on some of the trickier heroic fights.

Same. I thought Nahren was doing pretty well, especially since I’m working on two specs, but after futzing with my Paladin for a while I’ve realized Nah’s just not well-equipped. He’s decent for heroics and a few early raids, but he could be geared so much better. I should have kitted out the Resto set first before even looking at the Feral set. He’s really a pretty sad mishmash right now, and it’s hard to find the time to get him sorted out.

They’re doing extended maintenance on the listed servers to get them Cataclysm ready. Those listed will be down for 24 hours. Everyone else will just be down until 11am PST (2pm for us EST types).
