New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Good point tailoring is great for anyone who isn’t running heroics regularly (like my warlock) but for someone who is it’s a two week wait for your epics when you could have been racking up chaos orbs.

Do all tailors have all the dreamcloth patterns? Because if they do, they can make the belt in one go (if you have 30 of each volatile and enough cloth), and then the legs only take a week and a day, right?

Got into a H: Deadmines last night and finally got some usable drops! Both the wand and the ring (for dps) dropped, and … I lost both rolls. :frowning: boo. I lost them to a spriest. Should I have been mad? Neither item had SPI, and I’ve been hesitant to roll on SPI items as a mage. (unless I’m the only clothie)
It was a guild run (on their end) so arguing would’ve been futile, but damn! That wand! I need!

Yep dreamcloth is available to all tailors, it takes 12 dreamcloth to buy and make the belt and pants which could take as little as two weeks as there are 6 recipes if you include the cloth plus chaos orb one.

Finally starting to get a solid group going as we continue recruiting. We got Atramedes down last week, killed Maloriak Tuesday while I was off sick, and downed the Ascendant Council lastnight. That puts us at 7/12, if I’m adding correctly: not anywhere near where I want to be, but definite progress (and proof that we just needed to start picking up good players instead of being stuck with terrible PUGs). We got a handful of solid attempts in on Cho’gall, too (all under 50%, IIRC), so hopefully we’ll be looking at tier tokens tonight!

Also, thanks to Quasi, I have a new friend.

Painfully. You’d try to get guildies if you could, you’d whisper people on your friends list, you’d sit in a capital city advertising in Trade. Mostly you’d just get frustrated, especially for anything much below the level cap. The longer/more frustrating dungeons almost never got run (Gnomer, Mara, ST, DM).

I’m a JCer.

My $0.02: Caster item is a caster item, these days. Now, if you’d let the SPriest take an item with Spirit on it, it might have been nice for them to pass on one without the stat, but it certainly wouldn’t be required.

Got a few more new kills (new for me, not the group) last night - Valiona and Conclave of the Wind (both pretty easy fights, IMO). So that makes me 7/12, I think, missing the 3 final bosses, Atramedes, and Twilight Council. Should get Atramedes tonight, hopefully - got a few pulls in last week so hopefully people understand the mechanics now.

And yet, I still don’t have a single piece of raid gear. But I did finally get enough VP for my tier chest, so at least I have that going for me.

Unfortunately, we’ve had a rash of unreliable folks either just disappear (quit WoW without telling the raid leader), get deployed, or just plain not show up. So we might be back to finding players here soon… :frowning:

Congrats to you and SFG!

This week was weird for us, raiding-wise. We steamrolled through Magmaw, Omnitron and Maloriak, then stalled on Atramedes, a boss we’ve killed without too much trouble for the last three weeks. Very frustrating. I moved us over to Bastion where we took down Halfus and Valiona with no trouble, and that ended our first raid night.

Last night, we took some more stabs at Atramedes…and still didn’t get him down. I don’t know what the problem is–it’s not like we have different people in the group. People kept getting high sound, getting hit by fire…just generally messing up. I finally said, “Okay, screw it, we’re going to do Chimaeron.” And we did, easy-peasy. I reminded the team that Chimmy was supposed to be a much harder boss than Atramedes, defused a little frustration-based sniping, and back we went. No go. Everybody’s frustrated, and I’m not sure what to do to fix the problem except that tonight we’re going to alter our strat a bit to try to keep the fire out of the middle of the room better (we never really worried about it before because it hasn’t been a problem.) But I think we’re going to do Conclave and Ascendant Council first, and play with Cho’gall a bit to make the team happy (knowing our luck, we’ll take him down with no trouble, then go back and beat our heads on Atramedes the rest of the night. :P)

One nice thing, though: both the main and off hand BoE fist weapons dropped for us, and since nobody needed them, we sold them to some guy for 37,000g for the set. Our team’s bank is now sitting at 84,000g, which is about 4 times what our actual guild bank has. It’ll be nice not to have to pay for flasks for the foreseeable future since we can fund cauldrons.

Oh, BoE weapons… about twice a week there’s a Soul Blade on the AH (BiS for a DW Frost DK like me) for, say 25k… It’s so hard for me to resist, knowing the price has to come down (or we have to get one to drop), right? I’m sitting on like 65k personal gold, so I know I should probably just man up and buy the damn weapons, but it’s sooo much gold… :frowning:

As for the Atramedes troubles, that’s kind of what I’m afraid of. I was having no trouble avoiding the dancing circles last week, but I’m not sure I can say the same of the other melee. And we still haven’t gotten the gong-banging worked out during the air phase. So there will likely be some frustration tonight… or we’ll one-shot it.

I don’t get how people end up with so much personal gold, unless they win BoEs and sell them. My mage has about 28,000 and my DK has about 12,000, and I can’t seem to get up the motivation to try to farm up more because I just don’t have the time to do tons of farming. I really wish I did, since now that my mage is my alt and my DK tank my main, the only way the mage is likely to see Maldo’s Sword Cane is if I buy it, and it’s selling for around 50K on my server. He might get lucky and win a roll for a drop in our Friday night alt raid, but that never happens.

Our problems weren’t primarily with melee, oddly. They were with ranged who had to finish casts before getting out of the way of circles, people who kept running the wrong way when tracked and dragging the fire through half the raid, and people run away fast enough from the fire attack in the air phase. We’d be doing fine, doing fine, and suddenly, bam! One Modulation attack and half the raid is dead.

Do you have one person assigned to do it? We use a Mage. Having everybody on a voice chat program so that they can call out when they’re at the point where they can’t stay ahead of the fire anymore is also pretty essential. This is one place where Mumble really shines over Vent: not having a lag between when you speak and when everyone else hears it is amazingly helpful.

For me, it just kind of builds up, even without actively farming. If I didn’t have a bunch of gold sinks (BOE gear, any recipes I can use no matter how obsolete, pets, mounts, rep items, prof powerleveling), lord only knows how much cash I’d have.

First boss kill for our group last night, Magmaw! After wiping on him for an hour and a half straight. We were having to two tank him because the raid leader was worried about the armor debuff tanks get after Mangle. Which I can understand since he was NOMNOMNOMing our paladin main tank last week. This week we had to pull in a pug tank since our MT was sick. So much failure and frustration… melee dying and nobody picking up chain duty, parasites having their way with the ranged, lackluster AoE on the parasites, people getting hit by pillar, rogue popping killing spree and going for a swim in the lava. Okay that last one was pretty hilarious.

The last pull of the night… everything goes perfectly. Nobody dies, parasites don’t hit anyone, we switch tanks every mangle, and he goes down like a sack of potatoes. He drops the two handed mace and the pug tank wins the roll… he did offer it to me, but I told him to keep it.

Going for Halfus tonight, which I hope goes a little smoother.

[/QUOTE]

I look at that thing every day and drool, it’s a very nice tank weapon for me but I just don’t have that kind of money, guess I’ll have to cross my fingers for it to drop during one of our runs. Until then I’ll go about whacking bosses with my rolling pin!

I really need to spend an evening farming volatiles with my priest. I can get plenty of waters by fishing (with the added benefit of stocking up on Greater Sagefish) but I don’t know the best place to get the others.

I’m also going to change my pally’s professions. I leveled him up almost exclusively by running dungeons (easy to do for a healer), so I originally went with skinning, as the easiest thing to gather while levelling quickly. I added LW so I could send crafted items to my priest to D/E. But now I’m stuck with a holy pally who 1) can’t kill things fast enough to make farming leather worthwhile and 2) has a next-to-useless crafting profession that’s difficult to level when the mats are so tedious to acquire.

So I’m thinking of this for a plan:

  1. Buy 310% flying
  2. Drop LW and pick up… herbalism, probably
  3. Start with a couple of empty bags and fill them with herbs
  4. profit

Actually I haven’t decided if I’ll just sell the herbs and keep skinning (it’s nice in some dungeons like Grim Batol) or if I’ll drop it for alchemy.

Glyphs. I bought a few of every glyph on the AH for ~3g the night before 4.0 (or whichever patch changed the glyph system) and sold them for ~40-100g on patch day and through the following week. So I basically made 40k of that 65k in about a week through one minor bit of foresight.

My only regret is that I didn’t buy more of them. I know many, many folks who laugh at how little gold I have. At least one I know has two (or more) gold-capped bank alts. But these are generally players that are in-game a massively larger number of hours per week than I am.

We did (a hunter), but he didn’t really understand at first I think. The only person that had done the fight before was a mage, but he’s not a regular so the raid leader (rightly, I think) wanted a main-roster person to learn how to do it.

Not sure I could convince the switch to Mumble, but thanks for the rec anyways. I do notice a significant delay over Vent, which I could see causing problems here.

Grats! Always nice to get that first kill out of the way. I take it you were killing the parasites? We kinda cheat and have me kite them around the room using Howling Blast + Chillblains.

Halfus has a pretty easy combo this week, so hopefully you can get it down. The Mortal Strike debuff is pretty fierce though, and we wiped a few times while the tanks got used to swapping (the last few combos haven’t had that guy in them) and timing cooldowns when they had stacks.

Surely you’d pass such a tasty weapon over to a guild-mate for whom it’s best-in-slot, right??? Ok, how about for… 15k? 20k?

If you can possibly convince everybody in the guild to set up a new program, I can’t say enough good things about Mumble. You have much better latency and sound quality than Vent, plus extra features (like an overlay so you can see who’s talking without tabbing out or running a second monitor). There’s also a downside/upside when you bring in PUGs: some people have problems downloading and installing Mumble, but it also functions as a bit of an “idiot check”–if they can’t figure it out, they probably are also the kind of people who are going to stand in the fire.

Still, even when I’d been hearing all the good things about Mumble, it still took moving to a guild that used it exclusively to get me to try it out. Of course, now I never want to go back… but taking that first step can be a real pain.

We popped Slate and the whelps right at the beginning, with the Halfus tank being the one to pick up the whelps, and burned Bloodlust to get through Slate ASAP. Once Slate was dead, I grabbed Time and we killed him, so the raid could start dodging fireballs. The whelps went down just through incidental AOE. When we have the MS debuff, we have the first tank go to ~15 stacks, BoP it off from our Holy Pally, then go to another 10-15, at which point we start swapping. Going forward from that first exchange, we’re generally able to swap every 5-10 stacks, and in ph2 we swap after every roar so that we can trade off CDs while everyone’s stunned. (IIRC, the first tank swap happened while Time was still up, so we just traded tank targets.)

Alas, IT competence and play competence aren’t isomorphic. I’m a frakking Computer God, but I stand in [fire|shadow zones|frost bombs|landmines] all the time. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, if I get to playing enough to have some say in my guild’s raiding life, I might suggest it. Even back in WotLK raids, I noticed that a few players always seemed to be getting the message late. (Not me… I always heard the call about standing in fire, right on time. I just never realized they were talking to me!)

Gah! Bad luck tonight.

Was in Twilight Highlands going back to Stormwind to unload auction junk when someone asked for people for Crucible of Carnage and I decided to pay it forward (I managed to find a group yesterday). There was 45 minutes until Grey’s Anatomy, hey, why not?

Well, 5 minutes until Grey’s starts and we’re going for the 3rd try on Lord Geoffrey, and just as the group runs in, my door knocks and I needed to answer it, and jumped up and got it without saying afk, which is a dick move but I panicked because I didn’t want the person at the door to leave! Came back, everyone was still alive, hopped back in and made 2nd on the DPS charts. Still had to leave after though. :frowning:

DISCOVERY!

When doing that kalu’ak “Planning For The Future” daily on a hunter, use your Ferocity pet, not your Tenacity pet. Tenacity’s Thunderstomp ability kills the li’l pups :frowning:

Or switch the 'stomp off.

Shots, I’m lazy: linky for Mumble? Pretty please with sugar on top and [counts] three gnomettes making puppy eyes at you? (The warlock doesn’t make puppy eyes but she’ll be willing to make health candy and refrain from unleashing the bimbo on you)

I always thought that if a name was taken, then no one else can have that name no matter what server, etc.?

A couple of nights ago, I decided to look up my Belf Tanus in the Armory?

I was surprised to see there were a whole bunch of them in all races and factions.

What’s up widdat?

Thanks

Names are only unique on your server - if you group with people from other servers you’ll see their server name is used as a suffix to ensure uniqueness.

Switched my baby mage (29) from arcane to frost and who knew much fun frost is? Ok the spells are limited but the kiting and defensive freezing leads to a constant stream of dead mobs and players.

Thanks, martu, but I bet I have the only Usumbij on ANY server!
