New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

1.) Heroic Halfus down! Popping everything (but Slate, which we ignore) right at the beginning is what worked for us. The only frustrating part is that it took way, way longer than it should have, due to a combination of bad RNG and personal fuck-ups. After the kill, an old friend saw one of us update our status and mentioned that her guild always does it with three tanks on 10-man. That would eliminate a lot of the nasty RNG, but we don’t really think it’s an option for us until we get our DK’s offspec more geared.

2.) Apparently my DPS on Chimaeron this week was high enough to put me at #31 in the world on World of Logs for Prot Warriors in that encounter. May have something to do with the fact that I’m mostly wearing DPS gear.

3.) Completely forgot to mention–I got my Iron Chef achievement last week! (Learn 200 Cooking recipes.) I just wish it came with the same title.

4.) Val and Ther *finally *dropped their sexy, sexy BIS tanking helm last night. We’d have given it to my co-tank if Prot vs. Prot were the only consideration, since he tanks on single-tank fights, but since I could convert my current tanking helm to a DPS one (two upgrades for the price of one!) we just rolled on it and I won it. My Parry is getting high enough again that I actually reforged some of it back to Dodge (I try to keep it so that my Parry percentage is never more than two times my Dodge). Also picked up a mediocre chest for my Fury set (Expertise/Haste, I want to say) that was still better than what I was wearing. (It also let me reforge my DPS trinket that’s dripping with Exp to Crit.)

Actually, if you only do the requried bosses, it’s one of the shortest Heroics. There are two bosses you have to kill every time, and then you only have to pick two more out of the remaining five before you get RDF credit. Personally I always go with Marrowgar Clone and Rajh.

Wolkie does a good job of takin’ care of the “kids,” I bet.

Nope. As a Warrior, all of your special attacks should also start your auto-attack; right-clicking on a hostile target will also stop your auto-attack.

Actually you can skip Camelgar and just do mr. shield 'n snakes, mr. fucking alpha beams, and one of the guys up top.

ETA: unless they changed it with the most recent patch, but I see no reason why they would have.

I’m quite sure that’s incorrect–if you skip Marrowgar 2: Sandy Boogaloo you need to do two up top. I.e., any two out of the last five, which is Marrowgar 2: The Cameling and the four on the second floor.

ETA: That’s how I remember it working, anyway. I’ll try to remember to test it next time I get HoO.

I’m equally sure that I’ve done it in 3, but can’t test it on account of not currently subscribed.

I’m trying to google it up, but anything that looks useful I can’t get to from work. :fistshake at filter:

I can verify that killing Camelstooooooooooorm before a second-floor boss won’t end the dungeon; however, that may just mean that he’s viewed as an optional boss separate from the optionality of the second-floor group.

I’m with Tom - I have absolutely gotten my 70VP by only killing 3 bosses. Unless it’s been changed, all that is required is the singing dude, Mr. alpha beams, and fire dude.

There has been much weeping and gnashing of teeth on some boards about it (and in some PuGs) because folks either do/don’t want to do the extra bosses.

I know that it took me forever (basically until I did a guild run on normal) to get the shadow boss and finish Brann’s quest.

As you (and all the others) know, SFG, RP is where I’m at, and I love treating WoW as real-life.

It’s just the way I rock, ah reckon!

Thanks also to y’all for the auto attack thing! That’s going to save me a lot of time and trouble - not to mention a free space on the attack action bar!

Thanks

Q

A question for the melee toons amongst you. How do you have your UI’s set up? How do you manage to run around after a mob/boss, dodging whatever AOE’s they’re dropping on the floor, whilst also keeping an eye on what they’re casgting so you can interrupt/jump/run away at the right time, whilst all the while trying to keep up a rotation to get some good DPS in?

How would y’all feel about some real-life, non-battle/quest situations for our toons?

I got to thinkin’ about Wolkie’s relationship with Heather (Sentinel Hill Inn) a few days ago and how they’re seeing each other so rarely these days, but are still very much in love?

So I came up with this “relationship” quest he’s gonna have to handle called: “You’ll Never Break MY Heart Again, You Armor-Clad Mommyfrigger!”
(Heather’s too sweet to ever say “motherfucker” you see?")

(“Can’t even get your willie out fast enough without using a damn can-opener!”)

I already have to whole quest-chain sketched out.

Think Blizz would be interested?

Told ya’: 100% RP for the German Boy!

I have all of my abilities keybound (save one-use items like AotD, pots, healthstones). I bind them to keys near my movement keys (which I relocate to ESDF to open up more keybinds and to make it easy to know my hand is in the right place). I generally hold down my right mouse button for pretty much the whole fight, so S and F are strafing.

My primary abilities are bound to WRQTAGZVB, with Shift+ bound to secondaries, and 12345 bound to cooldowns. To me the key to keeping good DPS while moving is having your most important and often-used buttons in easy reach: for me that’s Howling Blast (W), Plague Strike (R), Oblit (G), Frost Strike (T). I try to keep less-used abilities on my pinky finger because it’s weaker and slower: so Outbreak is at Q, and Blood Strike is A. Important interrupts are also kept close: Mind Freeze is Shift+G, for example.

As far as UI I use Shadowed Unit Frames, Grid for raid frames (not so important as DPS), and have Quartz cast bars showing big 'ol target and focus cast bars to the right and left of my main cast bar (right below my toon).

I also always have enemy nameplates up using TidyPlates so I can quickly see all adds when they pop.

DK-specific but I have a rune/RP add-on right in the middle of my screen so I don’t have to watch my ability CDs on my main attacks. I need to get PowerAuras set up again to indicate when HoW has fallen off, and to add one more notification for when PoF is on CD, but other than that I can see most things pretty clearly.

Interesting may I ask why? As a tankadin I’m trying to keep them as close as possible due to diminishing returns what’s different for warriors?

Thirded, you need to do the first guy to open the door, the alpha bloke to use the lift then fire whatsit to get credit. The others are fun though so worth doing.

For tanking, I eventually bound my 2 basic attacks (heart strike and death strike) to mouse wheel up and mouse wheel down and put my interrupt on the middle button. Meant I had to put the zoom in and out buttons elsewhere, but worth it to save finger-moving.

Well, shit, apparently I’ve been killing one boss more than I had to. On the plus side, that’s going to save me even more time from now on!

Some relevant addons:

IceHUD: Puts bars on either side of my character for health, resources (Mana/Rage/etc.), and casting for me and my target.
BigWigs: Bossmod that gives me timers and alerts for boss abilities in raids. I believe there’s also a LittleWigs for five-man dungeons.
MikScrollingBattleText: Puts incoming/outgoing damage and heals scrolling along the sides of my HUD. Alerts me to important procs at the top of my HUD. Calls my attention to certain cooldowns at the bottom of my HUD. (This is the default behavior but it can be altered.)
OmniCC: Places a countdown timer on the buttons for non-instant abilities. No more guessing about how much time is left before I can use it again: I can see it down to a tenth of a second.
Satrina Buff Frames: I mainly use this to blow up the size of my debuffs. As a tank, I often have to be very aware of my debuffs and their stacks.
Tidy Plates: Threat Plates: I can set nameplate color, size, and alpha to be dependent on my threat levels. I can also put castbars under the nameplates that include the name of the ability being used.

One of the biggest things you can do to help your performance is to use keybinds (including the default actionbar) instead of clicking, if you don’t already.

It’s too bad you’re not on an RP server, Quazz–if you were, I’d say you should post the story to your realm forum. There’s also no reason that you can’t share your quest; but Blizzard won’t ever be able to officially acknowledge it, even if they decided to ever use it or parts of it.

Parry > Dodge for Warriors because of Hold the Line (when I Parry it gives me a temporary boost to Critical Block).

Personally, on my main my upscroll is Spell Reflect and my downscroll is either Heroic Strike or Cleave, depending on what I’m fighting. Shift+scroll is how I adjust my camera.

My other ability keybinds are:
Tab: Shield Block/Shield Slam
1: Thunderclap/Rend macro
2: Shockwave
3: Devastate
4: Revenge
5: Taunt
6: Charge/Heroic Leap macro
7: Disarm
8: Intervene macro (mouseover)
9: Shield Block
0: Victory Rush
Shift+5: Heroic Throw
Mouse5: Concussion Blow
Middle mouse: Shield Bash/Pummel/Arcane Torrent macro

I dunno about Blizz, but if you are ever in the market for a new game, C*ity of Heroes *has..or at least had…a system where players could design their own “missions” (sorta like quests) and publish them for other players to experience/enjoy.

CoH is a different genre–superhero rather than swords & sorcery, and in some ways is considerably easier than WoW.

I’m a tank not DPS but thought I’d answer this regardless.

I move mainly with the mouse but do have Q and A set up for forward\back and A and D for strafing, Quake habits die hard. I have the target’s cast bar front and centre (moved by Quartz) so I can see what they are casting.

My main rotation abilities are bound to keys around WASD (for all my toons) so on my paladin I have

Q = Crusader strike
E = Judgement
F = Avenger’s Shield
R = Shield of the Righteous
Alt-Q = Hammer of the Righteous
Alt-E = Consecration
Alt-F = Holy Wrath
Alt-R = Word of Glory

So my basic rotation (which I can do without thinking now) is

Single target Q > E > Q > F > Q
Multi Target Alt-Q > Alt-E > Alt-Q > Alt-F > Alt-Q

At this point in either rotation assuming 100% Hit (damn you Blizzard for removing Holy power generation from misses!) I hit R if I want to up dps hreat or Alt-R for a heal. It’s the same rotation only holding Alt if I have multiple targets.

One question for those that have combo points of whatever flavour – how do you keep an eye on them? I have two ways currently, power auras from each stack but they sometimes get lost in the spell effects and a MKSBT prompt at full holy power.

On preview ty SFG for the Parry info.

Rogue here.

First, of all, the right mouse button is always down for the entire fight, unless there’s some reason I need to swing the camera without moving my character (rare exception). I mostly strafe when moving (A and D keys) to maximize the time my attack arc is on my target (never backstep, too slow – turning and running forward is slightly quicker but I lose more damage that way). Never keyboard turn. No combat-useful abilities require clicking, they’re all mapped. Most commomly-used abilities are mapped 1-6, ctrl 1-6, alt 1-6. Combat cooldowns/items mapped Q, E, shift-Q, shift-E, ctrl-Q, ctrl-E.

IceHUD shows me my health and resource levels along with my target’s health and resource levels in the center of the screen. ThreatPlates also shows my target’s healthbar above the target along with my threat level. A cast bar appears beneath my character’s avatar (many addons do this, I believe it’s IceHUD for me) whenever the target starts casting, and I can simply press my interrupt key (same key for all toons with an interrupt) if it needs interrupted.

If you imagine my toon and the target as one box in the center of the screen (which I shall henceforth refer to as FiteBox), everything I need to know is displayed there. IceHUD, mentioned above, shows health and resources right there, overlaid in the center of FiteBox at 50% transparency. My buff/debuff display addon (I believe it’s called Raven) is set up so: my effects on the boss (debuffs, dots, etc) on the lower right of FiteBox. Cooldown timers on lower left of FiteBox. Short-term effects on myself (bloodlust/heroism, warrior shouts, item procs) on upper left of FiteBox.

Basically, that’s just a really long way of saying I have it set up so I never ever have to look away from the center of the screen. All the information I need is there, where, conveniently, I can still see if there’s a nasty ground effect I need to run out of. I’ll see if I can find a screenshot of my UI to post once I get home so you can get an idea.

ETA: IceHUD displays my combo points across the bottom of FiteBox.

1.) Speaking of IceHUD, any of you who use it and raid will get a nice surprise on Atramedes this week. There’s now a bar for your Sound.

2.) I forgot to mention, I saw another thing I love in the updated 4.1 patch notes. They’re going to be making changes to player ground AOEs so that they’ll have a distinctive coloring when they were cast by a hostile player. About fucking time–finally, you will know if you should stay away from something or kite opponents through it.

Huh, looking at all these key-bindings, I’m wondering if I’m doing it ‘all wrong’. I have all my abilities on my actionbars. I don’t like using bartender or really any extra bars. I do have the bottom right bar activated (which is bar 5, just repeated above my info panels area)
I much prefer to shift # to get to a bar and then type its #. While most of my offensive spells are on bar-1 (and that’s my ‘home’ bar I return to after every cast) But a few ‘specials’ are on other bars. For example, to counterspell, I hit Shift3-5, for polymorph I hit shift2-5. My AoEs are on bar 2. I find this much faster than using my mouse to hover over a box and click. Even my bar-5 which has my pots and food and mirror image. I find it easier to shift5 then type, rather than click the bar.

I seem to put out good dps, I’m not waiting after any GCD, can counter with accuracy, and can cast on the run, but is there a ‘better’ way? Not saying I’ll take it, since I don’t raid and am very comfortable with my system, but happy to take a look at different ways. (Maybe this is why I prefer rdps to any other roles  )
