New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

I can see the point. It seems Blizz can’t establish any milieu without strip-mining some culture. (We know how the Norwegian government objected to all of WotLK; has anyone heard back from Egypt about Uldum?)

It goes back a ways. I still grit my teeth playing Warcraft III everytime I hear that awful outrageous pseudo-Japanese accent orcish blademasters use. (Yeah, being Japanese-American sensitizes you that way.)

I’ve gotten pretty desensitized to the racial stereotyping in WoW. They may be caricatures of other cultures, but it’s gotten to where I barely think “Jamaican” for trolls and such. They just are what they are.

Fair enough. I’m not saying it was particularly evil, just lazy and a bit apathetic.

I suspect the irrational linkage of stereotypical faux-Jamaican accents with a Brazilian dance came down to “Dude… you know that capoeira is Brazilian, not Jamaican, right?” “Whatever.”

Wait, wait, Norway has a jungle in it? Why didn’t anyone tell me this? Can I go on a safari? :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, I’ve always kinda wondered about Sholazar. Terokkar too -a forest bordered on two sides by hellish wastelands.

The whole “jungle hidden in the arctic/antarctic” thing is a staple of pulp/fantasy stories. It almost certainly has a TVTropes page, but I ain’t going to look for it.

Yeah, and besides, there’s a lore reason for it: Sholazar is supposed to be one of the Titan sandboxes (like Un’Goro).

My worgen warrior hit 85. Snoopy dance!

That said, uh, I may have specced and geared him prot. looks shifty I’ve already loltanked one run (a reg VP) with 85 guildie heals/dps and a very bad 83 chicken, but I seriously need to do more studying to figure out what the best way to do it is. And how do you tanks handle the messy pulls in VP – priority with/without cc?

I’ve got Tank like a Girl and Achtung Panzercow lined up to read. Any other prot war 101 resources I should be hitting other than attempting to stea^H^Hborrow SFG’s brain? I did take a look at WI’s Protection 101, but it seems a little too generalized for the type of information I need.

The first few pulls are just going to be messy in my experience. Just do your best to interrupt the wild vortexs and otherwise just grunt your way through it… its not always going to be pretty. Don’t forget that shammies & warlocks can CC these guys as they are elementals.

For the pulls before the third boss… if there’s one healer, i usually mark the minister of air for CC and kill the healer first (if you don’t have CC, i’d go with the same strat just try to keep the minister interupted and kill him second). if there’s two healers, CC one healer and kill the other first then take care of the minister of air and save the cc’d healer for last. If you have absoultely zero CC its gonna be ugly, just try to kill the healers and keep them interrupted.

So I wanna try going into one of the old raids for shits and giggles and seeing how far I can get. I know I need another person to make a raid group with me, but does that other person need to enter the raid? I don’t know anyone on my server, so I’d have to ask a random person, and it’d probably go down a lot better if they didn’t actually have to leave Stormwind or wherever to help me.

They don’t have to enter the the dungeon with you, they just need to be in your party. They can even log off and play on an alt after you form the raid and you can just raid with the d/c’d toon.

In fact, if you can convince someone to hang on through the whole process, you can cut them out of the loop entirely.

Get on an alt and invite your new friend (do i remember right that you have to level 10+ to have a raid, now?)

Convert your party to a raid

Pass leader to your friend

Log off and log on to your main

Get invited to raid, have friend pass leader to you.

Kick your friend from the group.

You are now in a raid that’s just you and your offline alt, and should be able to enter any raid instance you desire!

I prefer cutting down on healers in order to get the fights done quicker which circuitously leads to less strain. I also like the option of being able to DPS, but our healer corps is a bit light, lately, so I’m not sure I’m ever going to get the chance. We use 7 on pretty much everything except for Al’Akir and Cho’gall (we use 8 and 5, respectively). I just think some farm fights could be made quicker/less painful with more DPS and less healers. Not sure where that breakpoint lies, though.

As for H Cho’gall, we used 2 Disc priests, a Holy paladin, a Resto druid and a Resto shaman. Here’s a link to the logs. Definitely not pretty, but it got the job done.

Nope, they just shouldn’t be doing any quests. Also, if you’re the leader, they can leave the raid after you have entered the instance, and you’ll be fine.

I’m a bear tank! …again.

So after the 4th failed random daily run, where a guild group of 3 went afk at the entrance, I decided to respec from boomkin back to bear. Queued up and rolled through H Vortex Pinnacle without any troubles whatsoever. Now all I need to do is level my paladin to 85 and I’ll have all 4 tank classes at max level again. Quick! Someone talk me out of it!

No the other person doesn’t have to enter the raid, they can even log off if they want to as long as their toon stays in the raid group. You can invite any old joe to form a raid group but make sure they know they won’t be able to complete any quests while in a raid. Usually I’d grab a guildy or someone who was about to log off for my raid group, I’m sure a random person wouldn’t mind too much.

Like Clawdio said that first pull is messy for just about anyone with or without CC.

My personal preference as a warrior tank is to CC the little vortex guys and let the big ones charge me, or if you have one CC just get one of them and charge the other, if you have no CC heroic throw one and charge the other. Either way it’ll be messy so don’t worry about it too much. The rest of the pulls are a lot smoother and easier to manage, just make sure you’re tanking with your back against a wall when the Gust Soldiers die or you’ll go flying over the edge.

Dear Blizzard: You’re still not in my good graces yet, but letting me tame King Krush and Arcturis within 2 hours of each other goes a long way!

So I haven’t done Throne of Tides since January, but the RDF dropped me into the Heroic today. Gods was that terrifying. There’s me and 2 melee DPS. They both die in the first stage of the Neptulon battle. One comes back for a little while, but dies again. So it’s me, tank and healer for most of Neptulon and Ozumat on Heroic. But we finished and didn’t wipe! It was bloody amazing. Like a boss.

Every time I see ‘Throne of Tides’, I keep on expecting Nick Nolte to pop out of nowhere.

BARES has lots of armorz… sumtimez is fun to has armors!!
DO NOT ask bare to heal, bare iz not 4 healz, bare iz 4 tankzorz!

Ahem… i mean welcome back to the fold of bear tanks!!
PS Cat iz 4 FITE!!!11!!

Hey, we Dopers on Cairne got ToT last night too, with a pug rogue who (fortunately) was pretty good. I got a nice 2H Axe for my dps spec, which should make my Tol Barad dailies go a little quicker. I really need to reforge some +hit, though, even just for questing.

Also? Flightless Bird and I discovered that teaming up for those dailies makes them go really fast, since you share credit for kills.

Sorry for not bringing the mage along. Long, rough day yesterday, and I, uh, was more interested in playing Rift than WoW. :o

So you’re saying if I already understand bare is for getting hit, kat is for hitting, cranky vegetation is for kissing the hits all better and awl is for hitting from far away I’m already ahead?

IMO their main problem is that their dev team is a bunch of white guys. (Well, okay, I think there’s *one *Token Asian Dude, but no other ethnicities and no women.)

Woohoo!

TBQH at this point I’m back to just facerolling everything. Since you’re not comfortable/ubergeared yet, I’d say you’re going to want to CC as much as possible and mark a kill order. You’ll have to get a feel yourself just by playing for which mobs need to die first (generally healers > casters > melee). Keybinding all of your raid markers, or at least the important ones, is immensely helpful (I use my function keys). You don’t want to be scrambling around in the UI right-click menus to try to tell people what to hit.

Assuming that you took Blood and Thunder, which is amazing for five-mans, you’re going to want to open any multi-mob pull with Rend, followed with a Thunder Clap as soon as the rest of the pack is in range of it, then a Shockwave. Be sure to communicate to your group that you need two GCDs to grab everything, and they shouldn’t start hitting until they see TC go off.

The Prot Warrior Spreadsheet from WarTotem over at Tankspot is excellent. One caveat is that when you’re filling it out, you need to know the uptime of certain buffs, which you need logs for. Otherwise, you can guesstimate, but then the results won’t be as accurate. But IMO it’s an indispensible tool for figuring out your highest DPS/TPS rotations, which can vary from character to character depending on your gear.

If you want me to check out your gear/spec/etc., just holler, by which I mean link me your profile. You can also check out mine (Sleutel on Area 52), but keep in mind that I’m currently set up for hardmode raiding, so I have some stuff like Safeguard that would be pretty shitty for your Warrior.

Yes you do. It’s at least 10–maybe higher.

The facerolls, Shin, think of the facerolls you’d be missing out on!

Definitely do the TB dailies in a group of 2+ people whenever possible. It doesn’t help with the collection quests, but everything else goes way faster. (And even the collection ones are speeded up by having more people to kill stray mobs in the area, not to mention synergy bonuses from buffs.)
