New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

The new BH boss isn’t too difficult, but it took us a few tries to get the timing on right on stacking so we could aoe the eyes and then be able to spread again so we didn’t get wiped out by Focused Fire.

In the process of killing trash to get Shannox to spawn, we ended up a Beth’tilac and gave her a try. That didn’t go well; spiders spiders everywhere. I think we spent over an hour on that fight and never got to the second devastation. Tanks dying everywhere!

After abandoning Beth, we finally killed enough trash to get Shannox up and gave him four or five good attempts. If we can keep the tanks alive, this fight looks like no problem.

Like others have observed, that kind of removes the entire point of threat management. With the way Vengeance works now, it should be pretty hard for your DPS to rip off you once your AP starts stacking, unless you’ve got an odd spec or aren’t using a properly maximized TPS rotation.

Define “beginning.” Anytime after the first 30 seconds or so and I’d agree with you. I was talking more about people who use Salv right away in the first ~15 seconds or so after the pull.

This is something that’s going to be very hard for anyone who’s not part of your server or faction to answer. Your best bet going forward is to use an addon like Auctioneer, where you can do scans that will cache historical price data for you and display it in a tooltip.

IMO, open a thread in Technical Support. They can probably help you figure out what’s going on.

Our biggest problem was people not moving out of the traps. Once peeps got that figured out it was pretty smooth going. Also, by our last wipe or two and the kill, me and the other tank got pretty good at getting the rend to fall off at every hurl. It certainly helped that our tank on the doggie (i was on Shannox) was a DK so he could chains of ice it to slow it down.

Its cool when you get some practice tanking with the same partner, i know if you’re both tanking your assigned targets, it shouldn’t make a difference… but with me it sure does. I get a feel for what the other guy is doing, and everything just seems to go a lot smoother.

Yeah I agree that would be silly.

Beth’litac is more or less a gear check. Once you get the basic strategy down you just need to have enough dps to kill the adds quickly and kill the boss before the damage buff stacks too high to be healed.

Yeah, that’s probably true.

Our process was to have all DPS stay down for the first few pulls and see where we wiped. After two final-phase wipes at ~20% we decided that’s how much damage we needed to do to her before she comes down, so we sent a feral druid up for the first two “top” phases. We kept him below for the third one because (a) he’d already done enough damage to her by then and (b) it’s very important to have all adds dead before the burn phase.

That got us a very clean kill with her starting the burn phase at about 75% health.

No, it totally makes a *huge *difference to be tanking with someone you’re comfortable with. That’s always one of the things I hate about joining a new guild: getting used to working with the other tanks.

A FREAKING MEN to that.

It’s even worse when you switch to an entirely different game, for that matter (two years in, I STILL don’t feel as comfortable tanking as I did in FFXI with my partner there).

I feel the odd man out - the one with the weird experiences.

I have, for the most part, had excellent luck in PUGs. I can count on one hand the number of times something really bad happened in a PUG. I’m probably more patient than others, however. I don’t start getting annoyed until about the 6th wipe on the same boss. I’ve never had really offensive language in a PUG before. I’ve never gotten into one of those petty need/greed fights.

I made it to 85 on quests and PUGs alone, and never had a guild until 85. I went on my first all-guild current content run, Zul’Gurub, the other night. It was a bloody disaster. We wiped on Mandokir like 10 times before I had to go to bed - I wasn’t exactly expecting a 2 hour run. Recount was bugging on me so I had to disable it and had no idea what the DPS was, but over Vent someone said he was going to drop party because he was holding us up with his 6k DPS. I hope I misheard him, because if he seriously was doing 6k, no shit we were dying. It was a surreal experience, I had never been in a PUG that ran out of the rez spirits before downing Mandokir. Most people say they only want to do guild runs because PUGs are incompetent, but it’s the other way around for me!

With regards to the new Firelands daily quests; there are only two places where you can pick up daily quests for Marks of the World Tree, correct? That one quest hub in Hy’jal, and the other quest hub in the Firelands itself?

Yes. In fact, you really want to do the Hyjal (Sanctuary of Malorne) ones first, because one of them turns in at the Molten Front–in effect, its own cookie crumb for the next 3? 4? dailies in the Firelands daily area.

Yup yup!

And on that note…THASSARIAN Y U NO VISIT HYJAL :frowning: He’s the only one I’m missing. I’m keeping an eye out for Koltira though. He doesn’t count for my achievement, but I assume he’s Thassarian’s Horde counterpart. But Johnny Awesome has been out in full force!

Really? I’m almost tempted to reinstate my account if Johnny Awesome is in the new dailies…

I just found out there is no Horde equivalent! That’s weird, yo. I always assumed there was an equivalent because Thassarian was on the list.

There’s a daily where you have to go to Setheria’s Roost and kill six of the two kinds of elites there, which shows up every day. (There’s also potentially another daily that involves items to be collected from one or the other.) When you enter the subzone, you spawn an escort of Druid NPCs without unique names, plus one random named NPC. You don’t really get to interact with them, but they do provide some fun flavor in /say!

You probably also have a free week if you’ve been gone for a month or more.

Yes, that’s what I’ve been doing - just wanted to make sure that there wasn’t a third quest hub that I’ve been overlooking. I frequently overlook the obvious when playing WoW.

Will Mankrik seal the deal?

I’ve had a few of those “Sethria’s Roost” dailies with no “special guest”, just the usual assortment of druids. OTOH, the one notable “also starring” NPCs that I had was Maximilian of Northshire. It turns out that, contrary to expectations (after all, he’s supposed to be as feeble and ridiculous as his literary inspriation)… he’s a hell of a tank. And moderately lucky at seasonal instance drops, since his mount is a big pink love rocket.

Ick, I feel dirty for saying that.

Ugh. They changed the graphic for Divine Aegis to be the same as Power Word: Shield. At first, everyone thought it was a bug, but nope! Working as intended. Because they thought it was too confusing in large battles/raids.

Yuh-huh. Whatever. Anyway, I’ve got my priest alt to 82, and have started running Cata regulars as the healer (as opposed to the DPS). It’s really quite fun; I have to use my cooldowns sometimes now, and it’s a lot more engaging. I also made sure to do all three of the heroic Icecrown dungeons at 80; H:HoR was freaking amazing as a healer. Even as a Disc healer with Archangel/Atonement, where I’m half-DPSing anyway (which was good, as one of the DPS ran at the Lich King in the final chase, and therefore died. I had to DPS and heal, but we made it.

Right. Sort-of a Darwin-correcting problem. I swear, if I saw that, I’d just say, “Okay, we’re now one player short.”

Though, to be honest, when that particular instance first was put in… Disarm worked on the Lich King when he was fighting Jaina. My rogue buddy would race in during their duel and swipe Frostmourne out of his hands, then yell, “All right, let’s blow this place!”

In other news… My gnome got her dark phoenix hatchling and her lion mount today! As predicted, the lion mount makes her look like she’s yelling, “Get me off this crazy thing!”

Also in pet news, it’s pretty damn amusing to have a little gnome running around the firelands holding onto a blue balloon!
