New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Blue blog.

Relevant quote from paragraph 3, emphasis mine:

Another quote from a blue post (ditteaux re emphasis):

So, the intended mechanic is dynamically balanced numbers. There’s metric buttloads of forum QQ protesting that it’s not working, and those evil <other faction> guys are cheating and exploiting and outnumbering “the good guys”, obviously, that’s why we can’t win, waaaah waaah.

I suppose that’s a better explanation than “We suck at PvP”.

My own eyeball observation is that numbers are inevitably pretty close to balanced.

Yeah, he’s a dumbtard or a cheating grieftard. By all means, if he’s on your team, report his failing butt… all 25 of them. But OTOH, if you’re on the battleground facing my team, please, please, leave him in. :stuck_out_tongue:

25 at a time multiboxing? I suppose it’s technically feasible, but it would (in my non-professional opinion) to stretch the spirit of multiboxing dangerously close to exploiting, and using it to own-team grief (or backchannel cheat to help his RL allies on the other side) would definitely ban-hammer material. IMHO. IANAL, IANAGM. YMMV.

Is this legit?

I’ve HEARD about a 7-day free offer if you’ve been gone a month. But there’s at least one typo, right in the first word, and it’s an offer apparently for 4.1, when I know we’ve got 4.2 active.

Here’s the actual “Received from”:

from blizzard.com ([unknown] [218.38.30.116]) by vms169119.mailsrvcs.net (Sun Java™ System Messaging Server 7u2-7.02 32bit (built Apr 16 2009)) with ESMTP id <0LOC00IGQ8VOHP53@vms169119.mailsrvcs.net> for jayjaygray@verizon.net; Thu, 14 Jul 2011 14:31:05 -0500 (CDT)

I should also note that I don’t find an option to accept my 7 days in Account Management, so I’m a little surer it’s phishing now.

I agree it looks fishy. Can you tell where the link goes (without clicking on it)?

Quasi! Great article! And glad some of the folks here went in to add comments. I’ll bet you pick up a bunch of new guildies to help and be helped by you.

http: / /us.battle.net.forums.login-password.tk/ (link broken)

That doesn’t look right, either.

Yeah, just checked. Legit forum login is World of Warcraft

It’s kind of scary…this email is GOOD. It has legit Blizzard graphics and everything. Only being a paranoid mf about phishing emails kept me from actually falling for it.

ETA: Ooh…that’s sneaky. The part that says “And much more…” is a real link to the real PTR 4.1 patch notes.

Der Players. Tipoff right there. That plus ‘click below,’ of course.

Could a player who multi-boxes enough toons create a situation where all his toons are in a BG and nobody else, as an easy way to get one set of toons easy PVP (honor) credits? If so, this would be a major exploitation. Can Blizzard even determine that a person is doing it? Same IP address does not necessarily mean only one player is using that IP address.

Dear Everyone

Thanks for speaking up in the comments section of the article. A few things didn’t make it in, and the mention of my Doper buds was one, but all in all it was correct the way we did the interview and Lisa did a terrific job. I will make my own comments thanking y’all for helping to make the game so much fun for me.

I especially remembered jayjay’s quote when I reached 85, about how he felt like he’d just put a kid through college!

Thanks again!

Bill

I expect that any exploitative play would require player reports; I really doubt any kind of automation would catch it.

Maybe server-side log analysis (like, all 5 shamans chain-lightninging at the same moment, all toons on the team moving in perfect synchronization, etc.)…

The main thing is, would multibox PvP really be called exploitative or cheating? I suspect it wouldn’t unless it rises to the level of full raids of one player. But I’m not a GM. I just know that Blizz seems to be very permissive of multiboxing.

An example I’ve heard of: 5v5 arena. The aforementioned 5 shamans one-shotting the prime healer for the opposition team, right out of the gate. Game over for them; it’s just a matter of time.

I have never heard of that tactic drawing the banhammer or any other sanction. It’s just rare because multiboxing is expensive.

I cheered when I saw it pop up on my daily read through! It’s a great article.

The IP address (which I bolded) reverse-DNS-lookups to South Korea Broadband Co. Ltd. Sounds like a botted home PC in South Korea to me.

So yeah, that’s about as legit as a 3 dollar bill.

Your caution has served you well.

Yeah, if you did have a legit offer of a free week, there would be a link in your Battlenet Wow/Cataclysm account to “Claim 7 free days of game time”. (As well as a link under the Game Time & Subscriptions tab).

Great article, Quasi! You’ve come a long way, baby!
/highfive

Agree with you 100%. Unfortunatly blizz does not. Even when he used to park himself in IF or SW and just repeatedly kill our Auctioneers & Bankers for a couple hours. Hate to give him any more attention than he deserves… but here ya go, a video from back in WOTLK, i actually remember being online when this video was taken.

40 Characters online at once in Dalaran

So I unlocked the Shadow Wardens tonight. Holy shit, if those are the easier dailies, I am not looking forward to the Talon Druid line, not one little bit. That “Enduring the heat” quest drove me up a damn wall. Broke my gear, big repair bill, finally had to google it to learn how to finish the quest.

Strange, I didn’t have any problem at all. Are you stopping to kill the elementals? Your best bet is to just run from rune to rune and avoid the shadows on the floor where the fireballs are going to land. Every time you stamp a rune, it immediately destroys all the elementals around you. I generally finish this quest in about a minute (however long it takes to just run the circuit). Your best bet is to not stop for anything except to jump at a heat vent (just jump straight up and let the current carry you – if you jump while moving forward and the vent doesn’t catch you then you end up in the lava).

The only Wardens quest that gives me pause is the one to detonate a solar core, and that seems to be because the Druids of the Flame hit hard and seem to respawn right on top of me as I kill another one. Of course, today I realized, “Stupid, you’re a druid. You can stealth and detonate before any of the four can get to you”. This after doing it the past week or so. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh well, I’ve now unlocked both Wardens and Talons on my Druid and now just need to decide if I’m going for the Armorer, Moonwell, or Ancients first.

I didn’t know about the heat vents, and died in lava a few times before I googled for clues. I can do it now…but it’s just not something I enjoy.
