New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

There are applications and hardware that allow keystrokes to be simultaneously entered across multiple applications on one computer and/or across multiple computers. It’s perfectly acceptable by the Blizzard TOS, because you’re still initiating the action yourself.

Wooooo!

Nope. You can’t fish underwater. However, I can’t count how many times I used the fishing pole when I needed to spend time underwater in Wrath that I was able to equip the pole, such as doing quests or hiding from opposing players in Wintergrasp. Also, note that you don’t even need to keep it equipped the whole time–you can just wait until your breath bar gets low, equip it, and then swap back to your normal weapons as soon as your bar is topped off again.

No clue what you’re thinking of–did you just start playing with Cataclysm? If so, you may be only thinking of Vashj’ir, where everyone gets the ability to breathe underwater. Other than that, though, the only classes that have spells for underwater breathing are Warlock (Unending Breath) and Shaman (Water Breathing); Druids also have Aquatic Form.

Most other items that allow breathing underwater have a finite number of uses and are only awarded once as part of a quest. The only other item that allows you to breathe underwater is the trinket that you can choose as a reward for winning the STV fishing tournament. (It transforms you into a fish, allowing you to breathe underwater and swim faster. I have it but almost never use it, since I can move faster with my turtle plus the Kalu’ak pole, without having to swap in a trinket and wait for the 30-second CD.)

Since they called you Der Player, maybe they’re going after German players!

You always want to look at the last word before the TLD (top-level domain, like .com or .edu). In this case, the website you’re actually going to is login-password.tk, which is definitely *not *Blizzard. Anything before that last word is a subdomain of the main one, which phishers use to lure in people who don’t know how to parse URLs by adding subdomains that look like other sites.

No, it would not be a major exploitation. It’s perfectly legitimate and allowable by the TOS. There is some advantage to multiboxing, but it loses out in flexibility. The player can’t execute anything they haven’t thought of ahead of time, they can’t send different toons to different areas, etc. Running this many toons at once would also be expensive–they’d all have to be on separate accounts, which means set up fees plus monthly expenses, plus the hardware and software to make it all work.

The Forsaken also have a racial ability that allows them so stay underwater much longer (at least they used to; with the number of times racial abilities have been changed maybe that’s no longer the case). It’s not quite underwater breathing but it lets them stay under much longer.

I know a long time ago when I tried to get to Moonglade by intentionally drowning myself off the coast, it was aggravating in how long it took to drown :).

That’s still true; the only change was to proportionately extend it when they lengthened everyone else’s breath timers a while back. I was just focusing on things that let you stay underwater forever without having to surface, even once every 10 minutes. Although if you have to stay under for more than 10 minutes, there’s probably some craziness going on.

I missed this last time I looked in here. Great article, and I’m really pleased that the comments are so positive.

You know how after you detonate the core and it bounces you to the top of a rock? The druids like to follow me there in flaming bird form. So there’s me, my polar bear tank and a bird all trying to kill each other on this tiny rock ledge and my melee is horrible, so I save myself by jumping off the rock and trying futilely to get ranged LoS and spam healing my bear.

My super-secret hunter technique for this quest: dismiss pet, use deterrence, run in and trigger core. When I’m blasted to the top of the rock I feign death and continue on my merry way :).

I’ve never tried the quest, but strangely, that was my thought: 9 times out of 10, a hunter has no obligation to continue a PvE fight he really doesn’t want. I abuse FD in blackguard fashion. Between Camouflage, FD, and freeze traps, I revel in the fact that I almost always get to pick my fights.

But that’s just me. I’m pretty much in it for teh phat l00tz, and fighting is a nuisance.

My God, Google knows me too well. When I google ‘deterrence’ wowhead is the 4th result.

What I did last night was a mage variant of this. I happened to be in Frost spec, so I popped my shield (whatever it’s called)…ran in and triggered the detonation. When it blasted me to the rock, I hit invisibility to lose aggro, then slow fall and summoned my chopper mount to ride a wheelie down to the ground.

Two applications I hadn’t thought of.

Actually I don’t even have WotK. I’m pretty much a noob. I do have a 60 Hunter, but getting to 60 anymore isn’t that impressive and doesn’t take that long. I’ve played EverQuest since 2001 and I sometimes mistakingly parallel the two games. In EQ, there are a lot of “water breathing” items available and it’s rare to find a mid-level+ toon who doesn’t own one. But EQ has several underwater dungeons and caves (even an “airless” zone) that make breathing items essential.

Seems a big give-away is the signature: The World of Warcraft Team. I’m pretty sure any Blizzard representative would identify themselves.

Hmmmm, seems like it should be against TOS, but that’s just me. Since you can use PVP points to purchase powerful PVP gear that can give you an advantage over other PCs, earning that gear should be a challenge. But I guess if a person is willing to pay for it in other ways…

Thanks for the clarifications.

Now I’m curious if the swim mechanic is the same as WoW’s (slows you down considerably). If so, would there also be swim speed boosting items, or is it just like running through molasses for the whole thing?

If you don’t think putting together an entire multibox BG or Arena team, and winning with it, is a challenge, then I just don’t know what to tell you.

Swimming does slow you down significantly…in the beginning. However, you gain “skill” in swimming as you do it. It takes awhile, but once you get maxed out (it’s capped by level), you swim pretty fast, almost as fast as un-enhanced land run speed (at least it feels that way).

Heh. I do, but I’m thinking not of a person who only controls one faction and faces the considerable challenge of multi-boxing against several other PCs of the other faction, but a person who controls every player in the BG, both sides. One side is passive, and he uses the other side to get easy BG kills and wins. Sure, it’s probably pretty challenging to set it up, but once that’s done, it’s cherry-picking. The part that is supposed to be the most challenging is the easiest. Is it even possible to arrange that? Wouldn’t the queue screw that up?

There would be no way to ensure a match like that; you don’t get to pick your opponents. If anyone were discovered doing it, that *would *be an exploit and they *would *be banned (or at least face stiff sanctions).

Woo we killed Lord Roflstomp!. I hate that fight so much, stupid volcanos. Big hugs to Jas09 for being a fantastic driver and not flying into a homicidal rage whenever a volcano would be activated behind the boss, and silly me dropping Spirit Link after the boss died (I have a screenshot as proof!)After all that Baleroc should be a walk in the park.

Congrats!!

My guild got our first kill of Nefarian last night, and today (i took a vacation day) i was tanking a random troll heroic for my VP and got lucky with some great DPS. We got the Bear Mount! And i won with an epic roll of 45 (with all 5 people rolling even!!)

Great article!

First, thanks, Clawdio!

Second, looting: I have been doing it wrong. Over on the glacier where I farm frostweave cloth, I attack mobs and use my stormblade, which kills them quickly, but then I loot one…by one…by one. So today I tried just repeatedly right-clicking on all the bodies and looted all of them in a very short amount of time before the loot sparkles diappeared.

I tell you, somtimes my stupidity is flabbergasting.

I’m not sure about this (never counted), but I think the game only gives you a certain amount of time to loot a mob, is that right?

Thanks

Q

5 minutes, unless there’s a rare or better on it.

Quasi, do you have auto-loot on? So when you right-click, it automatically moves all the loot from the mob to your bags. Sometimes that gets turned off so you have to click the items individually in the loot window (some people prefer to do it that way).

Speaking of loot, is there anything valuable to be looted from those orbs that hand just out of reach on the bridge in Vortex Pinnacle? Where you have to attack the orbs to stop the whirlwind on the bridge, there are other orbs floating off the edge that show the loot icon when you mouse over them but are out of reach. I was thinking of maing a loot-a-rang with my engineer but I’m guessing it’s not really worth it.

You need to click them for an achievement. That’s all.
