New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Forgot to mention that the rolled bandages when I made them, then appear in my backpacks and carry a price of 5g’s, if that makes a difference. They don’t really sell in the AH, and I don’t ever heal anyone except myself, so I guess it’s okay to vendor them, right?
Q

If you make more than you can use, they’re safe to vendor. They rarely sell on the AH because anyone can train first aid and make them. But once you don’t need them to level anymore, certainly auction off the cloth itself. In your case don’t use any more Frostweave to make bandages; put it all on the AH now. Just use your Embersilk for bandages once we figure out why you can’t right now.

I honestly have no idea what’s going on, Quasi. You absolutely should be able to make Embersilk Bandages, according to what the trainer is showing, but you also absolutely don’t have the option in your First Aid window to make them. I’m stumped.

This is definitely a case for a ticket, and you need to let them know that the trainer shows that you HAVE LEARNED Embersilk Bandages, but your First Aid window shows that you don’t know Embersilk Bandages. It’s definitely not something you’re doing or not doing, from what I can see.

Can a GM play as me, jay? I think that may be the best way to fix this, don’t you?

Thanks

Q

I’m sure it’s POSSIBLE…GMs are GOD, basically. But I don’t know if it would be necessary. They should be able to go into the programming and variables that are saved to Wolkie and figure out where things went kablooie on that.

All fixed. I don’t know what all he did, but he ended up playing as me and bought me some embersilk cloth (I already had 6) and was then able to fix things where I can now collect embersilks and train up that way. he said the problem could have been with my add-ons or my UI and to disable the a-o’s and correct my UI and he sent me instructions on how to do that.

Thanks you guys, for all your trouble. It is most appreciated!

Q

Oh, good!

Also, while I was waiting for my ticket to be answered, I signed into my Nelf, and the GM found me there to answer me about Wolkie and this is how he greeted me: “Howdy, Usumbij…” Next thing he wrote was, “OMG, I just sounded that out! LOL!”

I love it! So not a bad night, all in all. Got Mr. Wolkie fixed, a new haircut and made somebody laugh!

Q

I was worried it was the classic “disable your addons, delete your WTF folder…” stuff… frankly, stuff fellow players can’t be of much help with. Pretty much what the GM was talking about.

Sometimes the WoW client can be so fragile, and fail in such odd ways. (Not displaying the highest-rank recipe for a tradeskill? Really? What a bizarrely precise and subtle error.)

I guess it’s better than the other kind of WoW error, like when the ground disappears and you fall to your death at the invisible bottom of the WoW universe, or when you can’t log in, or get kicked out, or can’t start an instance…

I’m sorry, little Curse Client, but I find it very hard to believe that DBM needs to be updated EVERY SINGLE DAY THIS PAST WEEK. I open my Client, there’s DBM with an “update” button. I hit it and update the mod. Fine. Next day, there’s DBM with an “update” button. Go through it again. Wouldn’t be so bad if it didn’t take so long to update. Next day, yet again. Either something’s wrong with Curse, or something’s wrong with my client.

Curse Client hasn’t updated my DBM for almost a month. Do you have DBM set to beta releases? Those might come more frequently.

Opportunistic hordies amuse and irritate me. Had a mage following me around Molten Front yesterday, basically just being a dick–he’d stay invisible until mirror images were up, then burn me down as soon as I was engaged in PvE.

I’m actually making some serious gold for the first time in my WoW career, and the only downside is that now that I can credibly consider buying things that are 5000+G per I don’t want to, because I am afraid the market for enchant mats is going to collapse again and then I won’t have a gravy train to ride.

Any suggestions from the peanut gallery on how to acquire fat sacks of cash money?

That’s got to be the magic. I’m not using Curse; I’m using WowMatrix instead. But since I enabled beta updates, I’m seeing nearly-daily updates on DBM as well.

Let’s just say they have a very busy beta release cycle. For me, it’s kinda pointless even, since I don’t raid any more. Maybe I’ll disable it.

What I could use would be the 5-man equivalent. DBM stopped supporting 5-man content ages ago (or did they ever? my memory fails me). I know that some raid bossmob addons also have 5-man modules (Bigwigs with the Littlewigs module comes to mind), but when I was raiding the guild insisted on DBM, so I never relooked the issue.

OOH, I just browsed Curse (which by some miracle isn’t being blocked at work for the moment), and Littlewigs is a now stand-alone addon. Perfect.

ETA: Reading Comprehension is good. I should have read more closely. Littlewigs is just a 5-man module for Bigwigs, so I’ll still need both. Still, if they do what I need and let me get off the DBM carousel, I’ll be happy.

No useful suggestions. I’m poorer than a churchmouse. I have, maybe, 10K among 6 level 85 toons. And the shame of it is, since my main doesn’t raid, he could surely use the money to buy up one of the best ranged weapons in the current game. On my realm and faction, it’s running in the 20-25k cost range.

I don’t grind gathering skills very much, and that seems one way to do it, but not very productive it seems. I can clear a few hundred for a few stacks of Cataclysm herbs, but I wouldn’t want to do that every day, and it’s still not very fast. (Even on a Tauren druid with 310 flight. I’d hate to see having to do it with any other class/race combo.)

I’ve heard enchanters making fairly good money arbitraging the price difference between Cataclysm greens and what they disenchant into. I assume that’s the way you’re making money, and frankly, that’s one of the better ones I’ve heard of. It has the advantage of letting you invest your current gold rather than play time to generate your sale inventory, but since it happens entirely within the AH, I suspect it’d be susceptible to either competition-based input inflation (high demand for AH greens) or market collapse (as you worry about).

I got my seed money for the disenchant arbitrage game by mining entirely too much (on a paladin with 310 flight and crusader aura).

It’s happening to an extent already on my server–when I started in the game, Heavenly Shards were around 120g per. They peaked at 180ish, and are now at 100 and dropping a bit every week.

Naturally my response is to level a herbalist/alchemist, who’ll switch to inscription/alchemy when I get maxed and a decent reserve. Transmutes and milling are also currently profitable to arbitrage.

Shows how much attention I’m paying. I know it supported 5-mans in Wrath, but I thought it was doing it in Cata too–maybe Blizzard’s default warnings are just that good now that I didn’t notice?

My dbm contains DBM-Party-Cataclysm with :

So it even has support for the 4.3 five-mans it seems.

Well, crap. I just uninstalled it. I should read better, or maybe DBM should advertise better. I know for the longest time, their dev team’s stance was “We don’t do piddly-ass 5-man content. Real playahs raid.”

Still, it’d be easy to re-install. Although I wish it didn’t ask to update every single day of the week.

Yesterday evening was a classic example of why I don’t want to tank for non-guild groups.

I was playing Kalathan, my main Buring Dog Legion toon, and decided that it was silly for me to keep shying away from tanking heroic instances. So I took a breath, and queued in the Dungeon Finder as Tank/DPS. Of course I got a group in just a few seconds. It was the Lost City of Tol’vir.

Good, I say to myself. The fights are pretty straightforward, and I think I know them well enough. We all zone into the instance. Other than myself, there’s a Tauren Druid as healer, a blood elf warlock, an orc priest, and an undead Death Knight as DPS.

We start the run, and we seem to be doing OK. We make it through the first boss (albiet with one death), then kill the Aagh and his crocodile without any realy problem.

We’re working our way through the last mobs before the third boss when I start getting comments from the death knight - not the *healer *mind you, but the Death Knight.

“Tank, ur not reforged right”
“Tank, ur gemming sux”
“Tank, u are taking too much damage. u need more mastery”.

Well, yes, I reply. I know Mastery’s best for paladin tanking, but you can only reforge for Mastery if that piece of gear doesn’t already have Mastery on it.

“My friend is the best tank on the server and he only has 160K hp. it doesnt matter if u have 200K if u take too much damage.”

Oh-kay, I think to myself. There’s truth to that; but your friend isn’t here, is he? I’m here and I’m doing the best I can and no one else is complaining.

“ur a terrible tank”.

I stand there, astonished. This from a death knight who’s not even breaking 10K on damage as a DPS, when I (as the tank) am nearly doing 12K. And he’s telling me that I suck?

Screw this, I think. I’m not playing the game to be insulted, and I leave the group.

So, here’s Kalathan’s current tanking gear spec. Is there something I should be changing to make it better? Kalathan I’ve read the ElitistJerks Tanking/Protection Field Manual guide several times, and tried to follow its advice the best I can. About the only thing I can see that’s left more me to do is to swap out the gem currently on my foot gear – it’s currently gemmed for strength, but that’s because it does double duty as a piece of both my DPS gear set and my tanking gear set.

Ah, see, you forgot the number one rule for enjoyable PuG runs - ignore all comments from the riff-raff.

As for your stuff, since you asked… yeah, the boot gem is wrong. As is the belt gem with STR. In general, you should be replacing all of the straight STAM gems with mastery and avoidance gems (and every gem should have mastery on it). Shield should have mastery enchant. In general, I think the enchants are pretty sub-optimal (see here: http://elitistjerks.com/f76/t123600-prot_4_2_flames/#Enchants).

I could be wrong, but I think the meta is wrong (should be the 1% block one, not the armor one).

You might enjoy this site if you haven’t used it before: http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/gear/usa/cairne/kalathan#v1

Even with that, you’re more than fine for heroics (where tons of tanks don’t even have gems or enchants, much less the right ones). And hitting the right buttons and knowing the fight is about 200x more important that gemming and enchanting until the very cutting edge raids. Just ignore the folks in your party and you’ll have more fun!
