New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Spirit tap was removed in 4.0. Replaced with Glyph of Spirit Tap, which is not quite the same thing.

It used to, at least, be a top-tier shadow talent. I think there was “Spirit Tap” and “Improved Spirit Tap.” But it’s been so long since I respecced my priest they may have changed it.

ETA: Just saw aktep’s post. Ah well.

Anyone care to look at 11030 upthread and tell me what you think’s going on? (“Unrelated question”)

Thanks

Some items are coded differently than others - when you pick some up, it functions like a vehicle and changes your action bars. When you pick others up, they go in your bags to be used from your inventory. There’s nothing you can do to make them work differently, but if you do a daily fairly often (say, the magnets one in TB), you can put the item on an action button such that on the days you do pick it up it’s there ready to be used.

I think Quasi is talking about quest items that appear, and are clickable/usable, immediately to the right of the quest listing that appears on the right hand side of the screen in the default UI. They do not require a slot on an action bar. And no, Quasi, I don’t know of any way to make all quest items do that. The item is either coded to work that way, or it is not.

Well I sure feel like a numbskull now. I decided that this year I was finally going to go get that Red Winter Hat on my main (human paladin). According to the comments on WowHead, Grand Magus Telestra in Heroic Nexus was still dropping the hat at a 100% rate, so in I went to solo her.

Fourteen times. And no hat. I was starting to get pissed off.

So today I decided to try it on my rogue, and got the hat on the very first try. But I noticed the fight was a hell of a lot more difficult than it had been for my paladin, despite the fact that the rogue is only slightly less-geared than the paladin.

Yeah, apparently I’d run Grand Magus Telestra 14 times on normal difficulty. I’m not quite sure how that happened - I selected “heroic” from the menu, and I’m pretty darn sure the skull was showing on the instance portal. So anyway, I took my paladin back there again today, made darn sure I had the correct difficulty setting, and got the hat on the first try
On another subject, is anybody else getting as annoyed as I am with the size of the hit box on that Tyrael’s Charger mount? Look at this screenshot I took:

http://www.mister-rik.com/hosted/tyraels_charger.jpg

My character is the draenei warrior in PvP gear. I was trying to interact with the NPC blacksmith guy in Tol Barad Peninsula, who is standing right in front of me. The player on Tyrael’s Charger there is clearly nowhere close to being “on top of” the NPC. Yet when I clicked the spot indicated by the big red dot to the right of the NPC, my click selected that other player (who never moved from that spot, so it’s not like she moved into range just as I clicked).

I think maybe my annoyance comes more from the fact that the hit box simply extends so far beyond any visible part of those “wings”*, so I can’t even time my click in between the “wing” movements like I can with an ordinary flying mount.

  • Okay, they’re “tendrils”, not “wings”, but they behave like wings.

Ran the first 5 bosses of DS again last night, and am picking up gear left and right. But last night I picked up this mount! Experiment 12-B, a rare drop from Ultraxion. The comments on Wowhead say it changes color in different lights, so I’ll have to check that out.
I’m still getting used to the T13 headpiece, but wh11en I do, I may have to go find a wizard hat to xmog it to.

I jelly! My ‘rare mount of the year’ is the Black Drake off of Sartharion, which just looks someone shoved a Red Drake in the oven.

I’ve gotten one drop since the LFR started, and it wasn’t even a token. :frowning:

Question that I couldn’t google an answer for:
Sometimes an animated, glowing dotted line border appears around a spell on my hotkeys layout. What does this mean?

Probably that one of your special effects is ready. I don’t know how many of those you would have at relatively low levels, but some spells/moves have a special action that can only be used when certain conditions are met. For instance, my paladin’s Exorcism can become an instant (and I can’t remember the specific conditions that happens under) with a higher damage than usual, and the button for Exorcism then glows to let me know that’s ready.

Yup, it means some special ability has proc’ed. For my Frost DK it either means I got a free Howling Blast (no rune cost) or a Killing Machine proc for bonus damage to Obliterate or Frost Strike.

Other classes have similar ones.

If it’s your priest, it probably means you have 3 shadow orbs, which means your Mind Blast will do maximum increased damage if you cast it NOW!

The other thing your were doing with PW:S is gimping the possibility of scoring a 10% mana return from Masochism (41-point talent, shadow tree). Leave yourself unshielded and work Shadow Word: Death into the rotation. You will get a refund of 10% of your mana pool, instantly. You’ll do very little damage with the SW: D if the target is high-health, but the mana return is just too good to turn down.

I had the “not shielding” epiphany rather late in life (lvl 83, I think), but after that I almost never run out of mana, long fights or short. I can pretty much chain short fights (like dailies), with normal self-regeneration between fights restoring the small amount of damage I do myself with the SW: D feedback. (Another thing high spirit is good for.)

The only thing I really have to do is sometimes pop shadowfiend during fights (and you should anyway) or dispersion between fights.

I’ve run 2-hour mat grinding runs (farming the troggs in Deepholm for cloth) never having to eat or drink once except if I die for some reason. Fiend, dispersion, mashochism, and cannibalize* (since the priest Forsaken).

*well, technically, “cannibalize” is eating, I guess. But I’m sure you know what I mean.

Man, I always forget to cannibalize. And it’s so fun, too.

"Numbskull", huh?

Sounds like a great name for an Undead toon!

Thanks, guys.

Yeh, I just hate opening a bag every time to use a bomb, because it tends to obscure the playing field (IMO). Or maybe I’m just being anal.

Thanks

It’s the result of an option in your UI settings, though I can’t remember exactly what the option is right now (“highlight recommended action buttons” or somesuch) that lights up buttons when an ability that is usually not available is available (such as something that only becomes available after a dodge or crit) or lights up abilities that act differently under certain circumstances (such as something that does triple damage on targets below 20% health - the button will light up when the target hits 20% health).

Usually, if I need to use a bomb, I’ll drag it into the first slot of whatever bar is keyed to my number line on the keyboard. That makes it so I can just press “1” to use it. That way, if it’s one of the bombing run quests, I can press “1”, then use the mouse to target. If I displace one of my rotation abilities, I just put that button back when I’m done using the bombs.

I have never learned to bind my keys, jay:(, and I don’t know if I could remember all the keys to push at this stage…

w00t! My human paladin, Eilyssana, just earned her Merrymaker title! I already discussed the hat thing above; the only thing I still needed to do was the “With a Little Helper From My Friends” achievement. That achievement took longer than it needed to, though, because apparently “Random Battleground” means “50% Alterac Valley” (seriously, six BGs went Battle For Gilneas - AV - Gilneas - AV - Eye of the Storm - AV). And since the strategy in AV these days is “everybody on both teams race past each other to the other side’s NPC leader”, there’s almost no interaction and thus very few HKs.

So anyway, that leaves me just three achievements away from the Long Strange Trip meta: “Elders of Cataclysm” (not sure how I managed to not get that one, maybe I was too busy at work or something), “Elders of the Dungeons” (I was positive I already got that one, but I guess not) and sigh “School of Hard Knocks”.
