New WoW General Discussion Thread 6/8/10

Well I told the story yesterday about being booted from Heroic PoS before the first pull because of (I assume) my gear. The joke’s on them, though, because the RDF put me in heroic PoS again yesterday and we made it through without incident (except a lock who died twice for taking aggro too quickly). And I picked up some 232 plate healing gloves, which was a sorely needed upgrade.

After the BDL read failed to materialize, some guildies ran me through regular PoS a couple of times for the shield, but Tyrannus was uncooperative.

On my main, the RDF put me in HoR. Don’t know exactly what was wrong with that group, but we couldn’t even survive the group of waves before the first boss. After wiping three times I just decided to cut my losses. HoR is hard but I’ve never had that much fail.

Is it just me, or do you level slower in Northrend? It’s probably just my imagination, but it feels like I’ve been working towards 71 for a long, long time.

Still trying to figure out what I think of the new play mechanics they put in for quests there, like the harpoon shooting at Nifflevar. It was funny, I had no idea what I was supposed to do on that quest until WoWHead said to crank up the distance I could see. It was like being blindfolded and then seeing an entire damn village down there.

XP gains in the “old world” and Outland were dramatically increased at some point during WotLK’s run, so that people could get to NR more quickly. Northrend XP remained at “normal” levels. So yeah, there’s a slowdown (actually return to “normal”) when you hit NR.

If you couldn’t hold against the lock, it’s possible you couldn’t hold against them and they made the right call.

I don’t agree with that at all. Unless his threat is so low that the mobs don’t die before the healer goes OOM, then there’s no reason DPS can’t just pay attention and not pull threat. Kicking a tank because it means you might have to pay attention instead of spamming AoE is a bit of a jerk move, IMO. And kicking someone before a pull is even worse.

Now if he can’t be kept alive, that’s a different story (but obviously not the case since he did it without issue the next day).

As for me - Heroic PP 10-man down! Seemed kind of crazy for the ranged/healers, but as a tank pretty much the same as normal… still easily my favorite fight in ICC.

Only Sindragosa to go (hopefully this week), then a week for cheevos and I’ll finally have one of those fancy ICC frost wyrms (on my alt, surprisingly… came this short on my hunter before stopping 10-mans on him).

The problem with that logic is that I am the healer.

Lol. Forgot about that - just saw Pally and thought tank! So yeah… that’s just silly.

When I run randoms on my tank I often get under-geared healers, but rarely do you have to actually kick them. At least do a few pull and see how it goes.

Yeah, that’s kind of weird then.

Oh, thanks a lot. Now I have this in my head to the tune of the ad jingle for The Clapper.

Congratulations! Good luck knocking down everything else you still need for the drake, too.

Zing.

Seems like my plan oughta be just to keep trying to cram myself into ICC10, then? I’d already reached an identical solution on the gems (my current set is a halfassery result of some EnhSim runs back when my average gear level was 200ish.)

And yeah, I need another axe, but considering before the run those dropped I was using Blood Weeper/Aledar’s Battlestar…I haven’t had the opportunity to optimize on swing speed vs. anything else.

Heh…after my recent changes, I’m finding that I actually have to watch my aggro in heroics now. Pulling aggro off the tank was never a problem when I was struggling to crank out 1700 DPS, but now I sometimes spike well over 3K, and can do about 2500 routinely. I expect further DPS increases, as I’m changing up my rotation on tonight’s runs. More arcane blast, less arcane missiles unless missile barrage procs.

Also finding myself curious about that fire build Mil0 linked a page or two back. How do I respect my secondary set of talents? Have it active when I pay for the respec instead of the main one?

I gotta start inviting you to my guild’s RDF runs, we generally start with a tank and 2xDPS and fill from there. =P

On another note from my previous post…
One of the things I’m really noticing, having optimized with EnhSim quite a bit for a while, is that the gear game DRASTICALLY changes when you start doing so much as normal 10-mans vs. heroic 5-mans. But SFG covered the reasons for that upthread adequately.

I’m cranking 5-6k dps in ICC10 now, 3.5k easy in Heroics bursting to 4.5k, so I feel pretty good.

Just out of curiousity, how much gold do you think Shadowmourne is worth…considering all the time, effort and materials that go into it? What’s the breakdown in material costs?

IIRC, the standard Arcane rotation is to build up… uh, four stacks of whatever that stacking thing is, then use Arcane Missiles if barrage is procced; if it isn’t, you can either try one more of the stacking thing to see if you can get it to go off, or just pop off that Arcane instant attack to use up the stack (which otherwise you shouldn’t bother with, unless it’s a moving fight).

Correct. To make any changes to a spec, it has to be your active one. This includes:

1.) Resetting the talent points at a trainer;
2.) Spending any talent points; and
3.) Setting or changing the glyphs.

Oh man. TBQH, if it were possible to *buy *Shadowmourne, I wouldn’t see it going for under six figures.

ETA: IIRC, the only *material *cost in terms of BOE items for the weapon is the 25 Primordial Saronite you need to make Shadow’s Edge as the first step of the quest chain. Everything else from the first quest and after that is BOP items and quests you have to complete in the raid, like killing a shit-ton of things inside ICC, getting yourself hit with various debuffs and attacks, etc. I haven’t looked too closely at the rest of the chain, but I’m pretty sure that’s it.

I already have the tier shoulders/chest and I took a look at the Pillars of Might and the tier head/hands combo. I’d lose 14 defense and I’m sitting right at 540 now so I’m not exactly sure how far down that would drops me. The pattern I could get and make myself, but the mats are pretty hefty and I’m not the richest person on the block.

The guild my warrior is in isn’t a hardcore progression guild, it’s the same one Jas09’s DK alt is in. Pretty casualish 25 and 10 man runs, we’re up to BQL in 25 and my 10 man is on LK. No hardmodes or anything super challenging like you would be doing so I’ll probably stick with what I have, maybe change around a few gems.

Tried out Last Word and wow is that thing hot. I think the only time I didn’t have the proc was between mobs, now I really have to decide if I want to use my DPS axe with berserking for heroics or Last Word. The awesome looking axe, or the weapon with the awesome proc… it’s all about the looks. I have to look good while tanking.

Speaking of my 10 man, there isn’t one… not this week. I look on the calendar yesterday and see that we’re resetting the lock and one of the officers with a Kingslayer title is coming in to unlock hard modes. YAY! Says I. Hardmodes, something different and maybe a chance to gear some folks up. About half an hour later I receive a mail that the run has been cancelled. So I whisper the person that cancelled it and get a “I don’t want to talk about it. Sorry. You can replace me if you want and run it yourself.” So I leave her alone. Turns out there was some sort of fight about canceling/not canceling the run, I’m still not sure what’s up. Sort of a downer since we were making so much progress and I’m sure we would have had him this week, or had fun working on hard modes.

So in my quest to capture Loque’nahak on my hunter I downloaded a couple addons to help me track rare spawns. Got them all set up and start flying around Scholazar and what happens? Loque’nahak is spotted at like the third spawn point!

I fly down and see her!

…fall dead at the feet of an undead DK.

Sad.

My hunt continues…

If you can afford it, the legs are totally worth it. All that extra armor is amazing. Definitely worth chucking a Defense gem in a slot somewhere if you have to.

Better gear will *always *help you out, regardless of whether your idea of progression is BQL on normal or the Lich King on Heroic. That said, I do understand that you’re going to have different priorities for what to spend your money on. I just wanted to give you the heads-up that the legs are really, really awesome. (Like, “best in slot” awesome for anything you could find outside of Heroic-ICC25.)

:frowning:

This is probably not a good time for me to admit that if SilverDragon tells me a tameable rarespawn is up, I’ll still try to find it and kill it… :o

Okay, I need advice on emblems and shards now that I’m in Northrend. I understand that they kinda basically replace gold when buying gear, but that’s about it. Should I just horde (yay bad pun) them until I hit 80 since I probably won’t be able to get anything useful until then?

Emblems and shards for the most part only buy level 80 gear, and you won’t get them with any reasonable frequency before 80 (2 EoTs a day doing a random dungeon, and a single shard for each boss if you control WG). You can buy heirlooms, I suppose, but you’ll likely be level 80 by the time you save up enough to get one anyways.

These are a form of currency that is used to purchase level 80 gear for yourself or Heirloom gear for your alts.

“Badges” (so called because of the level 70 version, Badge of Justice) are currency in the form of “Emblem of ____,” which you get in return for killing Heroic dungeon bosses, running random dungeons, and killing raid bosses. These are exchanged for various pieces of almost all BoP Epic (purple) PvE gear. There are one or two BoE pieces of equipment, as well as BoA items you can mail to your alts, and a few things like epic gems or crafting materials that can be traded to anyone once purchased.

Stone Keeper Shards are earned for killing bosses when your faction has control of Wintergrasp and for completing some PvP objectives (Wintergrasp weeklies, e.g., though there may be other ways to earn them I’m not aware of). These are exchanged for PvP items: BoP Epic gear, gems, recipes, Heirlooms, tokens you can use for Honor, a mount, etc.

As Headrush042 said, the only items you can use now would be a waste of your currency as they’d be immediately replaced. You’ll want to start stockpiling your currencies for use once you hit 80 and can equip the Epic gear.

ETA: Note that it’s a specific subset of gear that’s purchased using badges. There are still some BOE items, whether dropped or craftable, that you can buy with hard currency, and most of the best gear still comes out of actual raids.

So, question. Last night I was grouped with a bunch of people, and we got a 70 tank in UK that had exactly one tank piece and a buttload of DPS pieces that weren’t even NR vintage. Needless to say, he died a LOT. He eventually dropped, and we got that rarest of beasts: an unholy tank that could hold aggro really well.

My 71 pally has a somewhat pulled together tank set, but it’s not the cobalt set. Should I be offering to tank in a pinch? (TBH I would strongly prefer to wait until I have that set, but I was wondering if that would be viable as a ‘crap, all the tanks went to bed’ solution) And if in a pinch, how do I tell how squishy I might be?
