can anyone reccommend a provider? I’m leaning towards Verizon, but I’m loathe to giving them any more of my damn money.

First of all, this question will quite likely be moved to IMHO because you’re looking for opinions.
I have a Roadrunner Cable Modem through Time Warner. I’m pretty happy with it. It’s up just about all the time, and once I got some bugs with my cabling worked out, it’s been great.
I’ve heard miscellaneous horror stories from folks who have tried DSL. I’ve heard bitching and moaning about Roadrunner Cable, but nothing too bad.
