Dear Friends: On June 20th I’m auditioning for Who Whants to Be a Millionaire? in New York. I’ll need a place to crash on Sunday, June 19th, or Monday June 20th, or both nights, depending on when I can score the cheapest flights.
If you would be willing to house a fellow Doper please let me know. I’m a 34-year-old, male, straight, non-smoker. I’ll arrange my own transportation within NY and buy my own meals. I can easily crash on a couch.
Good luck finding a free place to stay in NYC. You’re gonna need it.
I once read in a travel article about how there are these places for travellers and students to stay for really cheap, only about $15-30. The catch was that you had to share the room bunk bed style or share the bathroom in varying degrees. If money is that tight for you I would look into it. I would give a link but I can’t find that article or a site giving more info for the life of me.
They don’t offer to pay for a room? I was under the impression if you got far enough to go to NY, you were on the show and they paid for it. Did they change the policy?
Seems like a lot of money to spend on a friggin’ audition!
If you have a passport, there’s the ever-cheap Chelsea’s International Hostel. Yeah, it’s a gay neighborhood if that’s not your thing, but it’s also right next door to a police station, and the foreigners who bunk there don’t know any better (e.g. they’re just as straight or gay as any other random place).
Anyway, I stayed there and for the few bucks a night it was way worth it.
Also check out the YMCA system; I stayed at the Vanderbilt Y a few times when I was visiting over the years and it was nice, though it’s annoying to not have a private bathroom. However, it was very reasonable and clean.
Its Hosteling International. I stayed with them in San Francisco a couple of years ago. You’re right you do share a room with others although some of them do have the option of paying more for a single room.
I was in a room with 3 others and it cost me aboy $10 per night. It was very clean and free of weirdos (other than me).
Here is a link to their NY web site. It looks like it will cost $29 per night.
