New York, New York!

My Americorps team received our fourth and final project assignment, and it’s in Long Island, NY herding goats for six weeks. I’m super-psyched and looking forward to seeing Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, attending Big Apple Con, and spending Halloween in NYC. If any Dopers want to hang out, lemme know (hopefully it will work out better than my aborted attempt to attend a Dopefest in Philly).

Do you now what town you’ll be in?

I’m for it. What’s the good word?
… Big Apple Con. Not a bad thought. ConDopeFest?

Herding goats?

Yes, where do they herd goats on LI, and why?

Bear in mind that Long Island is (unsurprisingly) pretty long. Montauk, way out on the tip, is at least 2.5 hours from Manhattan. You might not be able to get here quite as easily as you think.

Well yes, it is Long Island after all, one of the most unexplored regions of the world where most of the inhabitants are simple pastoral farmers. I hear most people speak some English but with a funny but not completely incomprehensible accent. I hope that Mississippienne and crew can help them develop a sustainable lifestyle that caters to their heritage.

I have a really strong feeling though that the real job isn’t really going to be about herding goats but about preparing their alters for sacrifice. (Where in the hell did the Jewish smiley go?)

Yes, there are goat farms way out in the North and South Forks. If you’re in the South Fork you’re near the Hamptons, and it doesn’t get any better than that . . . though you’ll be damn far from Manhattan.

The goats are for ‘invasive species removal’, i.e., eating weeds. We’re going to be camping out with them some, which sounds very *Brokeback Mountain *to me. If I’m not mistaken, we’re going to be living in Steppingstone Park (the former Walter Chrysler estate is our next door neighbor, so to speak). I’m confident that I will be able to get into NYC proper on the weekends if nothing else.

If you can get into the city for a weekend I’ll be glad to grab dinner or a show or something with you. Let me know when you are heading this way!

I’d be game as well.

Steppingstone Park is about three miles from the Great Neck LIRR station. The train ride is only about 35 minutes to Penn.

Ok then, forget all this. Great Neck is a whole lot closer to Manhattan.

C’mon, Big Apple Con, folks! Let our freak flags fly!

I’d be up for something. Maybe a Halloween event?

The Chrysler estate has some terrific views of the Sound, if it’s the one I’m thinking of. (Walter may have had more than one). The one I’m thinking of is being used by the some sort of training school for Merchant Marines, I think. I’m about 15 minutes from Great Neck, and have done walking tours of the town, from a literary perspective.
