So I'm moving to New York

At the end of this month I’m moving to New York, Croton on Hudson to be specific though I’m not sure if I’ll stay in that exact area in the long-term. I’ve lived in Georgia my whole life so this will be a big and hopefully exciting change. I’ll stay with my Dad for a little while and then he is moving to California for work. Mundane and Pointless yes, but I felt like sharing.

Would you believe I actually know people in C-on-H? My friends from Michigan moved there so he could work at Google. They pay through the nose for everything and he spends several hours a day on the train getting to and from work. The houses are impossibly close to each other but it still looks wooded. You’ll be near the real Sleepy Hollow, which has a hee-yuge cemetery. Will you be working or going to school or both?

I grew up in the next town. Feel free to shoot me a PM or an email if you have any questions about the neighborhood.

Say good-bye to decent grits and cornbread. They can’t be had north o’ Virginia.

Ooh, welcome! If you are ever in the city and want someone to go to dinner with or whatever shoot me a pm. I am of the opinion that one can never have too many friends.

You grew up in Irvington?

C-on-H has some very charming areas and there are a number of great restaurants close by. There is a Metro North train line running through, but I don’t think it is as convenient as the one I would take to the city (New Haven line).

I live about 20 minutes from there - we like it a lot.

Best of luck!

Nope, not Irvington. Cortlandt Manor, a little outside Peekskill. Croton was my MTA stop. My parents still live up in Peekskill.

Yeah, but you can’t get a good bagel south of Wall Street, so it all works out.

Croton is a beautiful town. The train station there serves both Metro-North and Amtrak, which means you can go into the city either via Grand Central or Penn.

It’s also nearby where IBM has one of its most prominent research labs, where such luminaries as Benoit Mandelbrot and Llewellyn Thomas worked.

That whole area is beautiful and a nice train ride into the greatest city on Earth.

You should enjoy it.

Not true, there is a small handful of places in NJ that actually know how to make a bagel. I admit that I can only name one in my entire county and two more that are almost passable, but there must be others south of Wall Street I have not discovered.

What, no going-away party???

I found New York to be postcard-pretty when I visited. I hope you enjoy things up there.

Thanks for the offer, perhaps after I’m settled I’ll take you up on that dinner. The long-term plan is to try and get a job at Con Edison, my father works with HawkEye up there and makes some pretty insane money, though the work is pretty tough.

Wishing you luck and joy in your new life in the big city.

Howdy from Pleasantville, neighbor! What’s your pleasure? Interested in some darn fine barbeque?

I am and not too far from Pleasantville - is there a spot you’d recommend? Is it that place in Valhalla I remember hearing about but can’t remember the name of?

Naaaw. It’s in Croton on Hudson, down past the comic store, past Bestweb, and at the supermarket area. The one with the CVS? I forget the name of it, but it does New Orleans style barbeque, and it’s really good. I reccomend the pulled pork. And the banana pudding.

New Orleans is a little like South Carolina, so expect vinegar as a condiment.
