New Yorkers - I'm going to NY for the first time

On Friday, my company decided to send me to NY for a business trip. So today I’m packing my bags and I was thinking since I’m there I might as well do some stuff. I’m flying out Sunday and coming back Saturday.

I won’t have too much time to do sightseeing, since I will be working in the NY office, but I was looking to ask the NY dopers about good places to eat and what the nightlife is like for a wandering lad like myself. I’ll be staying at the Millennium Broadway hotel.

Does anyone have some tips to help me while I’m there?

If you happen to be around the south Street seaport there is this little stand where they have a very usefulbit of advice

Welcome to New York:
DUCK MOTHERF****R!!

C’mon! No replies? Help a bother out! = )

You should pick up a Village Voice when you get into town. It’s free and you can find it in those little plastic newspaper dispenser thingies around town. Just about every club of every size has a schedule. Just remember that shows tend to run kind of late, unless you go to an early show at a place that has multiple shows nightly. If you’re into Broadway shows, you’re there! The David Letterman Show is up in the 50’s. Maybe you can go to a taping.

be sure to be inside somewhere, off the streets, by sundown. That’s when the CHUDs come out.

What part of town is the NY Office located?
Actuallly even though you’ll be working 9 to 5 there will be plenty of things to do. Pick up a Time Out New York for lots of good ideas.

What are you interested in?

Niagara Falls in spectacular. But many people are surprised to find they’re not the highest waterfall in New York; those are located near Ithaca, which is a great place to spend the day anyway (I recommend the Moosewood Restaurant).

It’s unfortunately not the best season for the Adirondacks; but the good news is there’s less of a crowd. I’d recommend a leisurely drive along Rt 3 to see both the mountains and the lakes. There’s a good sandwich place in Lake Placid called the Saranac Bakery. Or if you’re farther south try the Boar’s Head below Old Forge.

If you’re a sports fans you might want to catch a game at Rich Stadium (Go Bills!). There’s also some great minor league teams in Buffalo, Rochester, and Albany. Saratoga has the races. And of course there’s the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Great Lakes is wine country; this is the harvest season and many places are hosting festivals and special events.

In my neck of the woods, there’s several interesting historic sites to visit; West Point, Hyde Park, the Vanderbilt Mansion, New Paltz. If you’re looking for more recent history, the village of Woodstock is a time capsule from 1969.

Oh yeah, and there’s a place called New York City on the southern tip of New York.

One of the problems I always have in giving people advice about what to do in New York is that there is so darn much to do. That being said, perhaps the best way to get really good New York advice is to do a search here for posts by stuyguy, particularly his advice in this older but highly relevant thread

Enjoy your visit.

Better yet, pick up a transsexual prostitute on the West Side Highway.

Yeah!! Just what we need…more freakin’ TOURISTS!!

The coolest place I remember visiting in NYC while I was working a few months in the area was a jazz club called the Mondo Cane club which if I recall was right off Bleeker St. A great little smokey jazz club with outstanding live music.
