Newlywed Legend - That'd be the butt, Bob, Solved?

This might be old news but I believe the orgins of the story have been sorted out. The page listed below has a discussion of the origin to the legend along with an MPEG of the actual show (The Newlywed Game, 1977) with the phrase “in my ass” bleeped. The couple looks middle eastern to me and that may explain the start of the racial shift and eventual language the final story has. Finally after three years of worrying Uncle Cecil might be testing us I can rest easier…

(choose Radio & Television, Television Legends, and scroll down to The Newlywed Game). The following is mid page with the MPEG at the bottom

"Recently a Newlywed Game clip (from a Game Show Network rebroadcast of the show) has come to light that may or may not be the origin of this legend. In a 1977 “Maternity Day” episode, Hank Perez guessed that his wife Olga would say the strangest place she’d ever had the urge to make whoopee was in their car on the freeway. When the wives were brought in to provide their answers to the same question, here is what transpired:
Bob: Here’s the last of our five-point questions. Girls, tell me where, specifically, is the weeeeeiirdest place that you personally, girls, have ever gotten the urge the make whoopee. The weirdest place. Olga?
Olga: Umm . . . (audience laughter)

[pause]

Bob: Yes, Olga?

Olga: Uh . . .

Henry: Go ahead.

Bob: Yes, Olga.

Olga: I’m trying to think. Umm . . . [Turns to husband.] Gee Henry, what did you say?

Bob: Hey, don’t ask him. He can’t help you out at all.

Olga: Is it in the ass? [Last three words bleeped]

Bob: No no no . . . no . . . what I’m talking about is the weirdest location, the weirdest place . . .

Olga: The weirdest location. I don’t know. [Laughs]

Hank: [Laughs uproariously] "

I can’t seem to find the original column by Cecil on this one, Argos_. Are you sure you read it here, and not over at Snopes in the first place?

By the way, it is somewhat old news, but there’s bound to have been other folks who hadn’t heard about it.

The closest I could find is a Staff Report which mentions it in passing. Is a child’s ghost visible in Three Men and a Baby?

I don’t think this relates to a column either. I think the most recent discussion of this issue here can be found in this thread Libertarian: Newlywed Game Remark where the snopes revision is discussed.

Welcome to the SDMB, and thank you for posting your comment.

This forum was created for the express purpose of discussing straight Dope columns. This particular subject does not seem to be mentioned in an online Straight Dope column, and I don’t remember it being mentioned in any of the Straight Dope books either. Since the original topic is not relating to a Straight Dope column, this thread will be closed with an invitation to re-open the discussion in another forum if the poster wants to discuss the issue in more depth.
