Fark.com has a bit of an irreverent view of the news media, but will aggregate the major stories (along with a lot of examples of “waterskiiing squirrel” for you to point and laugh at).
Provides a forum for discussion of the linked stories, while avoiding the usual newspaper commenting style that is one small degree above Youtube comments.
Yahoo News, itself, is crappy (well, if you like sports and celebrity news, it’s great I suppose), but more importantly, there’s enough good stuff there that I can find enough to read from a variety of sources, AND, whenever I go to a news article, there will be more links there to other stuff from that site.
For example, Yahoo will occasionally have an article from Christian Science Monitor, and once I get into a CSM article, there will be links to other CSM articles. Or if I get into an article from, say, Reuters, there will be links to other Reuters articles. Or if I get into an article from Vox, there will be links to other articles from Vox.
Of course, that is exactly what is good about any news aggregator. The point being, that even a crappy news organization like Yahoo can still be your gateway into any number of other news content providers, and each of those will have links to other stories they publish.
newser.com is another that is relatively quick to pick up new stories. Short summaries with links to originating source(s), etc. Not highly comprehensive on totality of news ongoings, but pretty quick to catch and summate the major headlines across the world, IME.
I hate Daily Mail for its side bar with sleazy stories like “Sun’s out, bums out! Catherine McNeil shows toned rear and extreme sideboob as she poses topless in Jamaica with pals.” I also love it for the sleazy side bar, but I’m looking for news and often won’t even click on stories that come from The Daily Mail.
