"Next Food Network Star" 062109

I’m not sure if anyone but me is watching this, but last night was particularly annoying to me in terms of the judges’ agenda. They kept Teddy, who outright lied to their faces, and served an abomination, and ditched Eddie, who yes, is questionable but didn’t fail the way Teddy did.

So, I guess it’s the judges keeping a “villian” around for the drama? Otherwise it’s too mild of a group?

Ulitmately I like Jeffrey the best right now. And I don’t care that I don’t hear too much about his “personal story”; just show interesting things you’re cooking. Debbie bugged me at first but she’s growing on me. And poor Jamika – even I, a dunce in the kitchen, know not to reuse marinade.

(And Ina Garten one of the most-loved FN stars? I love to hate her–so sanctimonious!)

Hopefully Teddy goes next. Bob and Bobby seem to be tired of the back-stabbing.

Poor Michael just seemed utterly out of it and in a fog. Fortunately he and Jeffrey pulled off a “How the hell did you do that for five bucks a head?!” meal that blew everyone else out of the kitchen.

I totally felt for Michael when he got asked about the topping on the soup or whatever–I would totally blank and have a panic attack. Of course, knowing this about myself keeps me far from a TV studio!!

Jeffry seems to be the odds-on favorite right now. He just has to start pulling out different stories. There is still a lot of flab to be cut: Teddy, Debbie, Jamika, Bug-Eyed Girl…all need to go.

I recorded this but haven’t watched it yet - having Garten as the focus of the show fills me with dread. (Not as much as having Sandra Lee would, though.)

Does anyone else remember a male contestant on the first show who described, after their introduction, Jeffrey as a “Greek god”? That made me go “WTF?” and “man crush?” in quick succession, but seeing the judges’ reactions to him, he must really have a lot of sparkle and wit about him - either in general or at least in comparison to his competition.

Luckily she’s not too much of a focus–I didn’t have a problem watching even with her on there.

Did they cut stuff out of the judging in the previous episode? I don’t remember Teddy doing anything to throw Mommy under the bus, that was Brett and Teddy tried to stay out of it. This episode everyone was acting like it was Teddy who submarined her…much like he tried to do to Debbie this time. Did he say stuff the wasn’t shown in the broadcast or did he get Brett-blowback?

Hard to say, given the editing. Teddy is a weasel, so whatever nasty happens to him is just fine.

I wondered about that too. I’m thinking he at least indicated (maybe with body language) the same things Brett did last week but since Brett had already spoken he didn’t have to–which made him kind of squirrely.

Is it just me, or did Tyler Florence seem like kind of a jerk last night?

Tyler Florence may have come across as a bit brusque. But I think he was acting as a typical director/AD/Floor Manager in talking to the “talent”.
It may have been a test – how well do you deal with pressure; do you start again and listen to his “note”, or do you go all Christian Bale on his ass?

As to the episode – I was surprised that Eddie and Teddie didn’t get the chop. But I suppose Teddie can stay one more week. Over at Food Network, Bob T claims that he wanted Teddie to go, but got out-voted.

It’;s interesting to hear comments from the live participants about things like “Jeffrey being a greek god” or “(Mummy) just sparkles*”. Because neither of them come off that way to me.
*Maybe she’s a vampire

Or a Succubus.

But would a director be that brusque to the talent? I can’t see them being impatient with Bobby Flay, not that these people are close to that star level.

I wonder about last year…did they push Aaron into the winning spot on NFNS because they already had “Will Work For Food” in mind for Adam? Aaron still makes me nervous the few times I’ve seen bits of his show–like he’s just not comfortable at all.

That Debbie drives me nuts. She’s just as dishonest. Didn’t she lie about not going over budget a few weeks ago and didn’t get the Dijon mustard? They are all backstabbing now. I think the health nut should go. She’s not getting it.

Which is funny, because that same day they had some show where Alton reused a fish marinade to make a sauce.

I’ve seen a bunch of recipes over the years that used this technique.

Agreed, Debbie has a lot of nerve accusing Teddy of integrity issues. She left out people’s ingredients in that first shopping trip after not watching her spending, and then said the crappy dessert was a team decision. He did turn into a major weasel there, but she’s just as guilty of that.

That being said, I’m usually pro-anything that gets faux-hawks removed from my viewing displeasure. Seen way too many of those on these cooking competition shows.

Did she reuse it raw? Because one can use it as the base of a cooked sauce.

Florence said he wouldn’t even do that, out of fear of some kind of contamination making it through. I don’t know how valid that is - I mean, you’re still using the meat that you “contaminated” the marinade with, so if you’d boil the hell out of the stuff, I’m wondering what could be so bad as to be left in it.

:smack: How soon I forget.

I kept thinking the show seemed like a scripted drama about a lying weasel who screws up his shot at a TV show, when I finally realized why: Teddy is really Jeremy Piven.

They made the right decision getting rid of Eddie. Eddie was a boring dolt. Teddy is an interesting weasel.

I could see either Jamika or Jeffrey carrying a show. Or even Korean Girl. But the point of this show is this show itself. If they manage to get a watchable host for another show that’s a bonus, but not neccesary.
