I had my doubts about him throughout the season, but just before the annoucement I figured it would probably be Aaron. Maybe his runaway son will come home now.
Interesting how Bob’s criterion was who will be able to hit the ground running the next day. I guess they have to hurry up and get Aaron on the air rather than letting it languish and fade away like the other woman I don’t even remember from last year.
I feel bad for Adam, who did well, and claims that this is the only thing keeping him going.
I have to wonder what niche Aaron is going to fill. They have “down home” cooking already with Paula Deen and the Neeley’s. I was less than impressed with Adam’s beer can chicken. That’s an old concept and doesn’t really take any work or thought. I thought the Vulcan did a good job looking at ease and making her subject seem simple, and they need a sort of up-scale cooking show. I had her picked for the win.
I’m so pissed of at Food Network right now. I knew Adam wasn’t going to win when I saw a commercial - during the FINALE - for a show that is a blatant rip-off of his idea. Ask Aida. W.T.F? Aaron’s the reason they kept 3 for the finale. He did so poorly in the last show but they wanted him to win. Gah! And for what? Big Daddy’s Kitchen? Why the hell would I watch that? I could barely stand to watch his promo tape. Blech.
I’m really disgusted too. Big Daddy’s Kitchen just seems like a warmed over Guy’s Big Bite, another show that I refuse to watch. I liked Adam’s concept better and I liked him better.
Funny thing is, of all the “Food Network Star” winners, the only ones I watched ever were Dan and Steve (Party Time with the Hearty Boys) from Season 1 and they got the crappiest time slot ever. 9:00 on Sunday Morning. I’m not sure they’re even on anymore.
I’m beginning to loathe the Food Network. They’ve become very short on useful information and big on “personalities” and they’re all personalities I don’t particularly like.
A disappointing load of crap and I’m sorry I wasted my time on it. Never again.
I certainly won’t be tuning in to Aaron’s show. In fact, I don’t think I’d watch any of them. To me, Adam was the most likable personality, but his cooking chops were lacking. I think the Food Network will need to do a better job of gathering contestants if they ever do this show again. They had a whole lot of “meh” to choose between.
Slight hijack: Did anyone watch Ted Allen on Food Detectives? I had high hopes tor that show, but it was barely watchable…
Now that’s too bad. I like Ted Allen. I didn’t watch the first one but I’m hopeful it will get better.
Or maybe it will go the way of the over-advertised, over-hyped Dweezil and Lisa show a couple of years back. Looked good in commercials but truly awful to watch.
I agree that they need a better pool of contestants.
Apparently he used to be a newscaster and now produces some shows for Food Network and has been involved in others. He also does Campbell’s soup commercials.
I can’t say I was rooting for any of them to win after their performances, but probably Lisa above the rest.
I agree with the complaint about Steve and Dan/The Hearty Boys’ bad timeslot. Sure, you could record it, but most people have to come across the show to be able to discover it first. (The Wiki article says that the show wasn’t renewed in 2006. I really like them and am glad to see they wrote a cookbook and are still catering and doing well.
Gordon Elliott used to have a show on Food Network. Can’t recall the name of it but the premise was that he would show up unannounced at someones door and prepare dinner from whatever he was able to pull out of the fridge, freezer or pantry.
As questionable as to how “unannounced” his arrival was, there would be some “interesting” finds in the fridge. Plus he would usually take a tour through their house picking fun at whatever was found. Of course his accent along with his personality charmed the socks off the families involved.
Serious cooking it wasn’t, but was usually worthy of a couple of grins.
Frankly I think the network was much more entertaining in those days. You had a line up of Elliott, The Two Fat Ladies, Mario, Emeril, Sarah, Flay, and Flay along with another guy grilling stuff. The shows they are producing now just seem to be interchangeable.
I was certain Lisa was going to win, especially after the “ready to go right now” comment. It occurred to me a while back that Food Network was a rather white network. Not too many personalities of any color. I wonder if Aaron’s color worked for him. I don’t mean to take away anything, but if you are looking to diversify your talent, this is a great opportunity.
She was in terms of culinary knowledge and expertise, but her personality was too inaccessible. Most people watching the food network don’t want to eat the stuff she cooks. Part of the show is imagining what things will taste like, and having some experience with the food. The show has to be aspirational, yet attainable and palatable to the average person. Her food is not. Most people don’t want to eat cod and leeks with some foreign sounding sauce. It may taste good, but I have little to base that on.
Adam’s idea was very good, but I figured they would steal it and make a better show. Especially, since they advertised his idea during the show (as someone else mentioned). His problem was that his food wasn’t too good, apparently.
Aaron was the safe choice. He’s fairly likable and a fairly good cook. I don’t envision myself watching his show, but I can see why they picked him.
I’ve been watching the Food Network since the late 90s, where there were hilarious lame-osities like Ready, Set, Cook! but also really great programs like The Two Fat Ladies.
I’ve thought that, with a few exceptions, TFN is pretty crappy now. Hey, how about the concept that if someone is watching a network about food, maybe they’d like actual cooking shows instead of, “let’s try to show that this is SO non-threatening that even a brain-dead rhesus monkey could do it!”?
I read on the FN web site that the winner from last season was offered a second season but declined the contract. She decided that being a TV cook was taking too much time away from her family and that the lifestyle wasn’t her cup of tea.
I have to disagree with you silenus. I loathe and detest Guy Fieri and both of his shows. If I never have to see that fat slob eating, drooling and talking with his mouth full again it will be too soon. And have I mentioned that I hate him?
And yes, all of the new Food Network shows seem to be the same stuff warmed over. Too much of a good thing.
Really, I’m turning into a curmudgeon and I should just get rid of cable.
I love Guy! I think he would be fun to hang out with. I’ve made a couple of his dishes, too.
I was surprised when Aaron won. He is too similar to the Neely’s show, which I think is way too cutesy. “The Spice Fairy?” Give me a break. On second thought, maybe his show will be better than theirs, and still be soul food.
I’m tired of all the challenges and on-the-road shows. Show me how to make food I want to eat!
I like a couple of the new shows - that cute black girl makes some good looking comfort food. The weird blonde woman chef is interesting - but my husband can’t stand her and I’ve yet to see a complete episode.
The Food Network is on in the background all weekend while I’m doing chores - it’s the default channel!
Food Network and HGTV are my defaults as well. I always hope to catch a new Good Eats because I’ll actually learn something about food and the exact recipe he’s using.
