The last suit I bought was in 2006; by the time I had the two-piece suit, two shirts and four ties, the bill was $3,000. CAD with tax. So I don’t find those prices at all out of line, especially when you consider the challenge of designing clothing that can be custom tailored to suit the various types of athletes’ body types. The design is not to my taste, but I don’t find those prices inflated, as you seem to.
As far as the Made in China label goes, yes, it was pretty dumb for someone in charge not to specify that the athlete’s clothing ought to be Made in America. However, that is the current reality - just like Milton Friedman’s pencil, or Tim Harford’s cappuccino, capitalism is about gathering the cheapest component parts and putting them together for the smallest amount of money. The sentimental choice to buy US made would have had a price tag.
Why should the US athlete’s clothing be any more American than what is on sale in Target, Walmart, J. C. Penny’s, Winners or any other US clothing retailer? (Sorry for all the low end retailers, I just don’t know where you’d go to buy a good suit in the US.) Or any more American than what the average American is wearing right now? I’m Canadian, but the T-shirt I have on was made in Mexico, my blue jeans were made in China, and my y-fronts were made in China to be sold under the name of a Canadian company.
