I predict Hillary will keep the lead in the end. It’ll probably get a little closer, but with only 44% of the vote left in Lake to be reported, I think it’d be unlikely for Obama to make up the difference at this point.
Let me be the first to say: Stick a fork in her, she’s done.
Heh. Maybe it is finally time for Fork HIllary 4: A New Hope.
(Although I was a fan of Fork Hillary 4: We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Fork.)
I simply can’t imagine that the supers would go to Clinton after this, even if Florida and Michigan do get seated. There’s been other reports of incredible turnout at other primaries, too, and like Shayna said a little while back, it’s not Clinton that’s driving people to the polls.
Like the guy on MSNBC keeps saying, we’re just hanging on to hear about one delegate now in IN. It would be nice if Obama can pull out a popular vote victory, but it won’t change the math much.
I don’t see an Obama-Clinton ticket either. But maybe Obama promises her a cabinet position if he wins? Maybe Secretary of State or AG. Dunno. I’m running on fumes now, so with that, I bid you good night.
That is a good point.
HRC is definitely in a position to horse trade. I’d like to think Obama would hold to his ideals and tell her to piss off but this is politics and he plays the game too. He may well throw her a bone to make her go away.
Guess it depends on how confident Obama is in his win and whether he figures he needs HRC voters on his side too.
Tough calculation.
EDIT: I think he should go for it all. Screw Hillary. I want Obama free of favors as president and I think that fits with what he is about. All or nothing.
Huh. It looks like Zogby, of all folks, was the closest in the polling. They called NC for Obama by 14 and IN for Obama by 2. Granted, IN was wrong but they pretty much tied with InsiderAdvantage who called it for Clinton by 4 (assuming she wins by about 1%). IA totally dropped the ball on NC, though saying that Obama would only take it by 4%.
Welp, it looks like Hillary squeaked out a win in Indiana
Wow. She really pulled close in Lake. 55-45 with 98% reporting. It’s not gonna happen.
It is less about throwing her a bone than about getting Hillary die-hards to come out for Obama in November and winning states like Ohio, PA, and FL.
Do you use your VP choice to help win one of those big swings or instead use it to help with your “Rocky Mountain strategy”?
Ah. Just declared for Hillary in a squeak. G’night.
I think so too, if he can do so without coming out looking like a sore winner. If it’s the best way to smooth things over inside the party, then he should at least offer her a position. Not VP, I think, but cabinet or something similar.
Clinton in the VP slot reminds me too much of the old days when the runner-up to the general election would be assigned VP. That didn’t work so hot, since the relationship was nearly always contentious.
ETA: And if their roles were reversed, I wouldn’t expect Clinton to give Obama her VP slot either. Fair’s fair. Course, to be honest I sort of think the Democrats would have been fantastically positioned if Obama had to drop out early and Clinton took him as VP, before any of the bloodspilling that’s happened over the last few months. Obama campaigning for Clinton would have been effective as hell.
That’s not a squeaker in Clintonland. She won by about 10% in Indiana. Another double-digit win.
In binary, of course.
If Hillary were to join the Obama administration, in whatever capacity, who would likely fill her seat in the Senate?
I agree and sorry I was not more clear.
“Throwing her a bone” in my mind means making her a deal (whatever that is) so she tells her supporters to line up behind Obama.
She’s a politician…I have no doubt she will play for this.
Rudy?
Nah. Double means 2, and if she wins by 2% then it’s a double digit win. And if you count MI and FL it’s triple, maybe quadruple!!
I dunno. What’s the drill in New York? Does Governor Paterson appoint someone, or will they schedule a special election right away?
Ah, I didn’t understand that you meant her immediate replacement.
Here’s what the law says:
" If a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator from this state in any even numbered calendar year on or after the fifty-ninth day prior to the annual primary election, or thereafter during said even numbered year, the governor shall make a temporary appointment to fill such vacancy until the third day of January in the year following the next even numbered calendar year. If such vacancy occurs in any even numbered calendar year on or before the sixtieth day prior to an annual primary election, the governor shall make a temporary appointment to fill such vacancy until the third day of January in the next calendar year. If a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator from this state in any odd numbered calendar year, the governor shall make a temporary appointment to fill such vacancy until the third day of January in the next odd numbered calendar year. Such an appointment shall be evidenced by a certificate of the governor which shall be filed in the office of the state board of elections. At the time for filing such certificate, the governor shall issue and file in the office of the state board of elections a writ of election directing the election of a United States senator to fill such vacancy for the unexpired term at the general election next preceding the expiration for the term of such appointment."
So, Gov. appoint temporary replacement until January when a special election will be held? I can’t quite tell. It’s late.
