NFL 2021: Divisional Round / Week Twenty Questions

I’ll point out that 3 years ago, the Chiefs lost in overtime without an opportunity to touch the ball as a consequence of exactly the same overtime rules that “victimized” the Bills this year.

The Chiefs ownership team proposed a change to a more even-handed overtime system like everyone is talking about now, and it went nowhere.

@gnoitall beat me to this post. And that’s why Chiefs fans (like me) are feeling that there was a tiny bit of justice yesterday.

Regarding OT: I used to hate it, but now I like it: the NCAA OT rules. Maybe the NFL might look into something similar.

And I stole this from Facebook: The next time your lady friend tells you that 13 seconds isn’t enough, just respond with “Patrick Mahomes.”

The NCAA OT rules were the source for the CFL OT rules. I like them.

Aaron Rodgers has one NFC Championship, so does Rex Grossman.

Anyone know how the Bill’s management voted on the proposal (assuming there was a vote)?

There wasn’t a vote since it was clear the proposal didn’t have near enough support for one to be necessary (24 votes in support).

I think he’ll hang it up. The decision would have been easier if he’d won it all, but quitting now would still be pretty much going out on top.

The odds of winning the SB next year will be worse, the odds of making it through another season without significant injury will be lower. There’s too much risk of ending his career poorly, and I think he’ll realize that after a little while.

Maybe, but the same competitive spirit that makes the greats great also seems to keep them stubbornly playing past their prime. For every great athlete who retires at the top of their game it seems like there are many more Brett Favres and Michael Jordans.

Aaron Rodgers has fewer 2021 playoff TD passes (0) than Travis Kelce, KC Tight End (1).

Combine the everyone gets a possession no matter what with no kicking extra points, always go for two.

An even easier bidding system would simply have each team bid for where they want to start the opening drive (i.e. no kickoff), lower yard line wins: one team bids the 15, the other the 13, the second team starts on offense at the 13. This could also be used at the very start of the game, esp. since kickoffs may be on the endangered species list anyway.

Yes, this is a reasonable alternative, but if I’m Andy Reid, I would pretty much always win the auction, even bidding to the 1 yard line if necessary, considering Mahomes and the dizzying arsenal of weapons he has.

Contrast that with Jimmy Garoppolo’s “Fuck the Packers!”

Cite.

Class act, you overpaid prick.

Jimmy’s from Chicago, he comes by it honestly!

As someone who lived in Chicago city limits for over a decade, I’ll simply point out Jimmy is actually from Arlington Heights, not Chicago.

Go Bengals! Ah, a rematch with two hot young QB’s with mad balling skills and ridiculously good skill position players.

Jesus the Bengals o-line sucks. The biggest miracle of the playoff weekend is Burrow not fumbling and/or being injured in the process of being sacked NINE freaking times. Ugh.

But, I expect a similar game to the one we had with them three weeks ago at PBS (and the stadium atmosphere was wild! Best home game I’ve ever been to), and similar to the one the Bills and them had just yesterday.

I think the other achilles heel for KC is their secondary. They can be had by Burrow, Chase, Higgins (who’s due for a big game as Chase gets increasingly focused upon) Boyd and Uzomah. Another strike against them is that they don’t run the ball well and we can. Mixon is a beast and I expect us to try to use hm to control the clock some.

Exactly

Meh. We did not hear the crowd or the opposing players jeering him the whole game - he was probably letting off some steam. We don’t normally get to hear what’s said on the field between plays, and right after the game. If he said that at the start of the game, at a press conference, boxing-style, sure, there would be room for outrage.

I think that the best thing to do for OT is just remove the rule that a TD wins it outright. Yes it slightly increases the chance of a tie but I’m guessing not much.

So under my proposal, if you score a TD, you choose to kick an extra point or go for 2. Your opponent gets a possession and if they match you, then it goes into sudden death (next points win). If they score more than you, they win. If they score less, you win.

I think that will be fun. It introduces more strategy; do you go for 2? You make it then your opponent has to get a TD and go for 2 just to stay in it. If you fail, then they just have to get a TD and score the extra point to win. Which means kicking the extra point has a lot of drama in itself.

If you kick the extra point, then they get a TD on their possession, they can go for 2. They make it, they win by 1. They don’t, they lose by 1.

And this also ends the complaints about a team not getting a chance. The OT coin flip no longer has as much of an advantage.

Anyway, that’s my proposal. I think it would be more fun, and more fair. And it’s only a minor change to the way it works now. The only downsides I see are that you will have longer OTs and slightly more ties in the regular season.

Another way might be that you just continue the game at the end of the 4th quarter, and it’s sudden death. So, for example, when the Chargers scored a TD on the last play against the Raiders, they know that a tie means they’re kicking off. Maybe they’re encouraged to go for 2 in that scenario.

The fundamental issue with this is that in an alternating game, like football or baseball, there’s always going to be some advantage to taking the first or the second turn, or in getting an extra possession.

I think that’s so much worse. That would be the equivalent of doing OT, but no coin flip; instead the team that last scored does the kickoff, and with sudden death it’s easy to score with a FG.

It does make going for 2 more interesting yes, if that’s an option for an immediate win. But I still think it’s even less fair that what the NFL is doing now.

That’s not saying it’s a bad idea though. If nothing else, games are shorter and you’ll never have a tie.
