NFL 2021: The Super Bowl

While it has already been covered everywhere else (random example), I feel that the Ram’s woeful victory parade attendance should get at least a mention in this thread for historical documentation purposes, or something. This one was my favorite snark tweet from the linked article.

FWIW, some of my friends and I were unable to get to the Eagles parade a few years back because all the hotel rooms from the night before were booked solid, and roads and public transportation were overwhelmed. One friend actually did make it by taking light rail to Camden, NJ and walking across the Ben Franklin Bridge, which I wish the rest of us had thought of.

It’s obvious LA is undeserving of a football team and so it’s kind of sad when their team wins the superbowl.

Just wait until the novelty wears off. Both teams will move away eventually.

When they do that at baseball games - even announcing “please rise and remove your hats for America The Beautiful” which I have definitely heard at St. Louis Cardinals games - I generally mutter to myself about how that’s not the national anthem and make a point to not stand up. Usually.

If we’re going there, my pet peeve is all the applause at the end of the performance of the national anthem, as if the singer is being congratulated for getting through it.

Why would that bother you, of all things? It’s a performance, and one generally applauds at the end of a performance. ???

Because it’s inappropriate to applaud the national anthem. It’s not a performance for your enjoyment. (Hey, if people can freak out over someone kneeling for it, I can complain about people applauding it.)

I’m trying to think of a sporting event that I’ve attended where the national anthem wasn’t applauded. And that includes any level, from high school to college to professional.

It’s still inappropriate.

The person or group performing the national anthem deserves applause (if the performance was good).

No, I think it’s safe to say this is a fringe opinion. Which, yes, you are more than welcome to hold and to complain about it. But don’t be surprised when everyone else thinks it’s a silly complaint.

I stand with Miss Manners on this.

The American Legion begs to differ.

It is perfectly acceptable and common practice to applaud or cheer upon the completion of the playing or singing of the National Anthem.

Besides, if a performer can make it through that song without screwing up, applause is warranted.

I said I agreed with Miss Manners; I don’t agree with the American Legion. And if someone does screw up the performance, do you then boo them? Do you only applaud if the performance is good? Is this a singing competition?

You know, if literally 99.99% of the population performs a certain behavior, openly, proudly and without regret, maybe it’s time to adjust the expectation of what is “appropriate”.

So noted.

I would suspect, however, that the vast majority of Americans do not agree with you or Miss Manners.

I wonder what happens in other countries.

Jeff Jimerson a Pittsburgh musician, has sung the National Anthem for Penguin home games for the last 20 years. What a gig! He basically has season tickets in exchange for singing a song (which he does very well). Amiright, @Guinastasia ?

Cheers.
More cheers.
Still more cheers.

Think of the pearl clutching at a Blackhawks game.
