Superbowl 53 game thread

I debated whether the playoffs thread would be okay for the superbowl discussion, and it probably would, but there will be various people coming into the forum who don’t normally watch football so I figured its own thread would be warranted.

I also created a superbowl commercials thread in Cafe Society, as it ends up being two different discussions anyway. But if some commercial talk ends up bleeding into here that’s okay.

Ok, so - I used to follow football, I understand the game, but haven’t followed it for many years, haven’t watched a single game this season.

Can somebody give a bit of context - quick summary of the the most important dramatic elements today?

Horrible throw by Brady. Love it.

NE defense looking pretty tough there on the 1st series.

Let’s just point out that Gladys has pipes still. Really good National Anthem!

Refs got the word from the NFL with that BS roughing penalty.

I’m only watching 'cause its raining cats and dogs and there doesn’t seem to be anything else worth watching on the 10763 other channels I pay out the butt for.

First and only Pro game I’ve watched in years.

Random thought: How has Suh avoided suspension/banning from the league? Hasn’t he elevated the Cheap Shot to an Art Form?

How is that Cloths-line tackle not a foul?

God this is boring.

Good defense /= boring. Although both Goff and Brady are not playing well.

He hasn’t had any suspendable penalties this year.

Because the play was dead, and because it wasn’t a clothsline.

Want to get drunk? Have a drinking game where you drink every time one of the announcers says something about what happened in the game “last week”

Wade Phillip’s for MVP.

I don’t watch a lot of football, in fact I watch exactly two games a year: the Superbowl and the Canadian equivalent, the Grey Cup.

However, I do have a question. It seems to me that if it was obvious that the QB was just throwing the ball away that intentional grounding would be called. Is intentional grounding not called any more?

If the QB is outside the tackle (usually the second guy on either side of the snapper), it’s not intentional grounding, even if it was thrown away (which Goff did in this game).

This year’s Super Bore is the only pro football I’ve seen all season.

Shouldn’t the Rams have called time out at the very end of the half in order to force Brady to risk a safety again while downing the ball? That’s a fairy precarious situation and he didn’t seem to enjoy doing it.

God what a boring game so far and this halftime show sucks.

I feel you on the halftime show. Adam Levine is no Prince.

I said the same thing. He knelt on about the 1/2 yard line on first down. Make him do it two more times. Probably nothing would happen, but it might have been interesting.

Wow. Shockingly boring.
