NFL 2021: The Super Bowl

Ouchie.

The Bengal drought continues but hey, home (though not always) team wins at home at the new stadium.

Exactly. But hey, you got that ring, Aaron. Good on you!

They did start relatively early – making it an afternoon game in California.

Anyone buying those rumors that McVay will hang it up?

He is getting pretty old.

5:20 start feels pretty typical to me…can’t recall.

I have to admit I would have enjoyed the Joe Burrow cigar experience more than watching OBJ cry.

What an awful 4th and lucky win! Glad Kupp got MVP for saving lame Stafford’s ass. Bengals blew it by giving up a 3rd then 4th and one! Rams were smart is stopping MacPherson’s chances at FGs.

Overall, a shit game. I suppose most of the “stars” on Rams will be traded days after draft.

In other news:

I knew it would be a close game. Burrow did set a record for most sacks in a Superbowl game. (8, as a poster said above). Enjoyable.

7, which is a record tied with 3 other games.

Rate this as the 56th most enjoyable Super Bowl. Let’s see how the monobobbers are doing on USA network.

Jesus Cover 2 Christ, if I have to read one more piece of garbage “Matthew Stafford was the missing piece” hot take, I swear I’ll stop this thread and turn it around.

You won’t hear that from me

But you got to admit they probably don’t get this far in the first place with Jared Goff under center.

While it was a close game, it was not an especially exciting one. Both offenses were fairly conservative. The Bengals going for it on 4th down on their first drive was gutsy, but unwise. Not at all surprising that Burrow was under duress the entire game. And I get the impression people don’t really like Stafford? I don’t know, I thought he played well enough.

Why do I have to admit that? You could plug in a dozen different NFL QBs into that game for the Rams and they would have won. Stafford was fine, but his 5.3 completed air yards, 2 interceptions, and 89.9 passer rating was nothing special.

They literally got this far with Goff 3 years ago.

Without having read the whole thread, I have one comment related to the Super Bowl. Prior to the performances of America the Beautiful and the national anthem, a sign language interpreter was introduced and then almost completely ignored by the television cameras. What was the point of having a sign language interpreter if no one could see her?

Alright, fine. I can’t prove a counterfactual, so go ahead and use a plug-in QB to get through the season, win each game of the playoffs and get to this point. Sure, they did it with Goff 3 years ago. I’m sure rolling dice is a great strategy in general.

For songs that everyone knows the words to, even deaf people.

I suppose since they had a team of deaf football players there, it was a nice gesture.

Bigger issue, everyone was standing for America the Beautiful, not a song that anyone should feel the need to stand up for. (even the military group in Kuwait was at attention. I feel it is an impossible goal, but FFS we should stop playing those songs at sports matches.

This was my takeaway as well. I’m glad it wasn’t a blowout, and there was some drama at the end, but it certainly would have been nice to see some more big splash plays on either side of the ball or even special teams. Even Burrow’s big 75 yd TD throw was not really exciting thanks to the facemask penalty tossing the defender to the ground. Chase’s one-handed grab in the first quarter was the only real highlight catch of the game. And the multiple penalties in the red zone at the end defused much of the tension of the Rams final scoring drive.

So, pretty bland, sadly, even for a close one. It would have been nice to see Burrow lead at least a final FG drive to get to OT, but alas.

I do feel a bit bad for Jared Goff, though. What a shitty career trajectory he’s on right now…
