NFL 2021: Week Three Wise Men

Injuries and Covid the big news again this week. The Texans, Dolphins, and Bears (and maybe Colts) all lost their starting Qbs. Perennial douchebag Antonio Brown gets Covid (Yeah!), as does Zach Ertz. A couple of very good pass rushers may be out (TJ Watt and Brandon Graham). Lots of new faces.

There are 10 new, first year nominees for the HoF. While I expect Nick Mangold, Vince Wilfork, and Andre Johnson to make it eventually, none of them stand out as first ballot guys. Devin Hester will likely get a lot of push too, for a guy who did one thing well.

In other news, Tom Brady tells kids to getoffahislawn (the game is “softer” now, which may be true, but he’s played his entire career with a “softer” NFL. I’m sure Bart Starr is laughing his ass off somewhere). Odell Beckham Jr. might grace us with his presence for the first time this year. And we get to see a couple rookie Qbs in Justin Fields and Davis Mills begin their NFL careers.

Week 3 will have at least a few games that show everything we thought we learned from weeks 1 and 2 is wrong. Here’s your games:

I’m, surprisingly, interested in tonight’s game. Sure it helps to have juice in the game (C’mon Panthers to cover!), but I rarely watch either of these teams and both have interesting stories. Is Sam Darnold v.2 actually good at football? Can “my guy” Davis Mills stop sucking? Who else is shocked that the Texans actually won a game (Way to go David Culley!) Should be a good watch to start, but it may be over by halftime if Mills is lost and the Panthers D is great.

3 games catch my eye of the early games. Chiefs/Chargers should be an explosion of offensive scoring. I’ll want to see if the WFT defense is for real and if Josh Allen isn’t. And I’ll definitely peek in on Justin Fields to see if he is better after a week of reps. Plus the Browns’s run game against the stout Bears run defense should be good, grind it out football.

The afternoon games include some interesting matchups (are the Raiders for real? We won’t find out since they’re facing Jacoby Brissett), but the Bucs/Rams is a potential NFC Championship matchup and should not be missed.

The Packers get another prime time game Sunday night, but this one will be much more of a challenge. The Packers defense is poor, especially against the run (4th worst), and, despite yet another rash of injuries, the Niners seem to be able to get it done on the ground. Jimmy G is fine when unpressured, which will be good for him because the Pack can’t rush the QB for shit. I’m nervous.

And the Monday night game should be interesting too. A divisional game between two rivals. Cowboys won ugly last week as the Chargers shot themselves in the foot repeatedly, but their defense is still highly suspect. The Eagles learned not every team is the Falcons. Should be fun.

So, which new QB is going to shine this weekend (if any)? Who are you watching? Let’s hear from you.

This is funny. Apparently Taylor Heinicke has been lobbying for an endorsement from Heineken for the last year or so and they weren’t interested. However, Bud Light was paying attention and just signed him up. Soon, at least in the DC metro area, we could be seeing packs of “Bud Lighticke.”

Hmmm…Ravens at Lions…Ravens are 1-1 but they can put up points, so they will probably steamroll the Lions’ D. Doesn’t look like the Lions are going to stop biting off their own kneecaps any time soon.

Late Sunday Brady & Bucs against Stafford & Rams looks like it could be a fun one. Stafford is looking good now that he’s not being dragged down by Lions. I hope that game gets shown in my market.

I wonder if Heinicke’s loud MAGA opinions made Heineken not interested? May not be worth the blowback, and the DMV definitely isn’t MAGA country.

Awww. this makes me sad. I liked Heinicke and his story. I didn’t know he was a fucking idiot. Oh well. At least I can go back to hoping nothing but pain to Dan Snyder.

Wilfork is a no brainer first ballot guy to me. He was incredible for a stretch there and had a relatively long and decorated career. Mangold too was probably in the top 2 or 3 interior lineman in the league when he was active, but I can’t say I watched enough of his snaps to have a strong opinion. My gut is that he will get in pretty quickly due to NYC bias. Andre Johnson feels like the Hall of Very Good, especially when you consider all the modern WRs playing now and recently retired (Fitzy) who will be loading up the WR corridors very soon.

Nick Chubb vs. the Bears secondary is absolutely terrifying. Fade the Bears hard this week. Fields might be great, but even if the Bears front seven keep the running game in check, it’ll only take a couple plays getting to the second level to spoil it. Basically the rushing version of what happened vs the Rams passing attack.

Probably homerism on my part, but I’d say he’s at least as good as half the WRs in the Hall.

He had David Carr and Matt Schaub as his QBs for the best years of his career and still put up huge numbers. That alone should put him in the pantheon of all time greats. And nobody ever accused him of being a prima donna.

I don’t see Wilfork as any better than Casey Hampton and slightly less good as Richard Seymour. Both those guys are still not in the HoF, and neither were particularly close to being 1st ballot. Seymour, especially, should be in before Wilfork.

Plus Andre beat the ever loving shit out of complete asshole Courtland Finnegan.. I’d give him extra credit just for that.

Old joke but…I think you mean Cortland Innegan. Cause 80 beat the F out of him.

Looked at from that POV, yes. He’s better than most already in, but we’re on the cusp of a whole new generation graduating to the hall. AJ was a little early, and he didn’t sustain it the way guys like Adams, Julio, Nuk and Fitz did. In 7-8 years there’s going to be a group of WRs eligible who make some of the current guys in there look like they played in the pre-Super Bowl era.

That said, fucking Drew Pearson got in so I’m probably totally wrong.

It’s hard to compare inside guys with edge guys like Seymour. It’s possible that Wilfork’s generally likable personality and media image colors my impressions, but he was the most irreplaceable guy on the Pats dynasty (excluding Brady of course). Immovable NTs always get overshadowed and few did it better than Vince. Hampton is close but Vince edges him out in all the measurable categories.

Seymour played DT in 4-3 and DE in 3-4 (gotta love his versatility), which isn’t what I would consider “edge”. But I get your point, he wasn’t a traditional NT. I’m just not sure the average HoF voter (or I) see that difference as making Wilfork a 1st ballot guy while Seymour’s on his 4th go at it.

Seymour not being in is mostly because the HOF voters (rightly IMO) are comparing him to guys like Reggie White, JJ Watt, Julius Peppers and Richard Dent. Also being traded away from the Pats in the middle of his prime says something not great (circumstances being what they are of course). While he might be one of the best guys who’s not in, he also played a position that is as star studded as any in the hall.

His time as a DE in a 3-4 doesn’t put him in the discussion with Aaron Donald and Geno Atkins, he was usually lined up outside in the Pats hybrid scheme. Unfortunately for him he’s a tweener like Justin Smith and Aaron Smith and several others.

I don’t really think him being in or out says much of anything about Wilfork or Hampton.

Gutsy call by Rhule to go for it on 4th and 1 without CMC. Great stop by the Texans.

Aside: Comparing Seymour to protypical 4-3 DE’s, especially gods like White and Watt, is horribly unfair to him. His versatility shouldnt be a negative.

The NFL should just come out and make it illegal to tackle any QB at any time.

Corollary: Pass catchers must be allowed to go wherever they want, including through a defender. Physics does not apply.

Corollary 2: Every pass catcher is 10 feet tall, with 3.9 40 speed, and a catch radius of 37 yards.

Flags on their hips.

Apparently Carolina TE Dan Arnold has retractable, elongating arms, ala Inspector Gadget, to catch passes that are 4 feet away from his regular human’s outstretched arms.

theres a few toilet bowls sunday eh ?
