NFL 2022: The Super Bowl

A little grab here and there during the 5 yard bump is going to happen. When the defender is badly beaten by a move off the line and there is separation between the two players with an arm in between with one end attached to a handful of jersey, it’s going to get called. These calls happen at full speed in real time. You can grab ahold of the jersey with that much separation to show it easily to the ref. It’s going to get called often.

Sorry, man. Yeah, grabbed jersey. Some combination of clumsy fingers and spellcheck.

What I was saying was classy was not complaining, “I was robbed!” “I didn’t hold him.” Or even, “They hadn’t called that tacky stack shit all game.”

I’m a firm believer that referees make mistakes, same as coaches and players, and that that ought to be a part of the game. Which is why I dislike replay.

I don’t know how many similar offenses went uncalled during the rest of the game. Were you paying attention to a great number of graded Hersheys  that went uncalled? Maybe there is an argument that if the refs tolerated some standard of play throughout, they oughtn’t call things differently at the end. But there is also the argument that a player ought not try to get away with something when it really matters.

Someone previously linked this long article that addresses this and makes what I consider some interesting observations.

And they point out an earlier, far more egregious hold that went uncalled.

Overall, I was pleased that there seemed to be very few penalties in the SB.

I would also like consistent refereeing, but often when I hear people say that, they’ll point to that one play that was indeed a foul, but which refs possibly didn’t even see (this definitely happens on the OL, where players usually have a very good idea who has eyes on them, and time their holds accordingly).

But I also want to comment on the “missed penalty” in the Slate article. Bradbury does pull JuJu’s arm, but as you often see in soccer fouls, moderate contact somehow cuts nervous system control of the legs, and he flounders to the ground like a Neymar. So, depending on whether the ref even saw it, he might have dismissed it. Hard to say.

Some really skilled DBs are great at impeding receivers and hiding it from the officials. It’s part of the game. You can call it cheating, and there is an argument that it is, but being sneaky about that sort of thing is part of the game.

It’s just like how OPI is called and not called. If a receiver gives a nudge it is rarely called, but if a receiver fully extends his arm(s) to push a defender away before making a catch it will (or should) always be called. Even though it’s essentially the same thing. How blatant and obvious the player is will depend on how likely it is to get called.

JuJu Smith-Schuster getting into the Valentine’s Day spirit of things.

He’s getting a lot of backlash for it. Personally, I find it pretty tasteless coming from him. I expect it from fans, but players probably should stay above it.

Edit: It is funny. But you know, time and place.

That’s freaking hilarious.

Yeah, I don’t get it. I’m a Chiefs fan, and I’ve been impressed with how the Eagles team has been taking the blame for the loss, and not bitching about the refs or the field. The Eagles fans I know are the same - they’re mostly pissed at Gannon for not making adjustments in the 2nd half. It seemed like the Chiefs players spent a lot of time after the game praising the opposition and what an incredible fight they put up - this is really a bullshit nose-rubbing that’s so unnecessary.

Probably because Kansas City was famously on the winning side of such a situation a year ago.

A year ago, the Bills were leading the Chiefs 36-33 but chose to kick the ball back out the end zone as you suggested. The Chiefs, who had 13 seconds remaining, were able to drive downfield for a game-tying field goal in those 13 seconds, and eventually win in overtime.

So the Chiefs know very well not to leave the Eagles time on the clock, even if it was just 7 seconds.

Just so you know, he didn’t make that. It comes from the NFL Memes page. There’s like 20 different valentines with different players.

It might initially been from fans. I saw it in Reddit a couple hours before that tweet, posted by one of the r/kansascitychiefs redditors.

If Juju saw it and it tickled his fancy, I could understand him wanting to share it, perhaps not even realizing how pointed it looked coming from him. (Or maybe with full awareness.)

My Eagles fan friend sent that same thing to me yesterday. Essentially the same joke was used by RitaOak for her daily drawing of Jimmy G. It’s humorous coming from pretty much anybody BUT a Chiefs player, especially JuJu.

I figured that part was obvious. I don’t expect many NFLers are busting out photoshop. The tacky part was posting it and tagging the player.

Here is where it came from if anyone cares.

Some of those are good.

The Tua card made me sad.

Of course the Whopper one is best.

I saw this morning that the Arizona Cardinals went 1-8 this year at home. Two of those losses were to the Chiefs and Eagles. So whoever won the Super Bowl would have more wins in Phoenix than the Cardinals.

A point not lost on the Chiefs’ subreddit.
