NFL 2023: Wildcard Weekend

Yeah, I can’t quite figure it out myself.

Apparently it caromed off his helmet while his foot was out of bounds.

I haven’t watched football since the 70s, but since the wife is from Buffalo, we tuned in for the first quarter. I’m astonished that the place was sold out, considering the brutal temperatures. And the fans had to clear snow off their own seats.

You obviously don’t know the Bills Mafia. They are a dedicated fanbase. I asked my wife about the weather conditions for the game to today and how much snow they got. She (from Bufallo) said, “oh, only 18 inches.” I’m like “what do you mean only 18 inches?” (We’re in Chicago.) “Oh, that’s nothing.”

We’re going to be getting a lot of Mike Tomlin sideline face aren’t we.

Pittsburgh not going quietly.

No, and as one of the commentators noted, “Pittsburgh is still in it.”

Okay, halftime is over. Buffalo has possession.

The pace of this game is dogshit. It’s looking like they won’t finish before kickoff for tonight’s game.

It is moving slowly; I agree. But between the all the play reviews in the first half, and the time-outs for injuries, I’m not that surprised.

We’re nearly finished the third quarter, and there’s over an hour until tonight’s game, so I think everything will fit.

Unusual amount of injuries. Never seen players dropping like flies like this.

That’s a replay we’re going to be seeing for a while.

I think Josh Allen’s rushing touchdown was better. But that just means they had two phenomenal touchdown highlights.

So now run run run FG up by three scores?

EDIT: Was not expecting that first down.

I was thinking more about the missed tackle, but yeah.

The Steelers inability to throw the ball downfield in this game ( and all year) actually makes me jealous when I watch other games, and see routine completions longer than 7 yards.
I swear I breath a sigh of relief every time they actually get a first down.

At least they found a way to make it interesting this year. Will be an interesting offseason, I wonder if they cut loose all 3 quarterbacks currently on the roster.

Here’s a dumb question: what is the electronic wizardry behind showing the line of scrimmage and the 1st down line? It appears to actually be lying on the ground, as you can see players apparently stepping on it, but that isn’t possible. How dey do dat?

Image recognition is pretty good these days. They are now sufficiently advanced to identify players and not draw the lines on top of them. Still not absolutely perfect but more than good enough.

Exactly that, wizardry. It involves a map of the contours of every field, sensors on all the cameras so they know where they are positioned and pointing, and color palettes of the field versus everything else so it knows what to overwrite with the yellow line, and what not to.

ETA: that article might be a little out of date. I think it takes less processing power and fewer people to run it these days.

And as @Great_Antibob says, it might also use image recognition in addition to color palettes. But I’m guessing it’s mostly based on colors - that takes a lot less processing power and is quicker for the real-time refresh rate they run, and it doesn’t have to be perfect.

It’s from 23 years ago. That’s an eternity in the computing industry.

Mike Evans dropped a TD, oof.
