Are the memelords definitively suggesting that Rodgers would be the starter? I thought the rumors were more about bringing in a veteran as backup and mentor.
Of course, I don’t see Rodgers agreeing to be a backup, and I can’t imagine who would think he’d be a good mentor.
I was kind of hoping Miles Garrett would get out of Cleveland. This is what I’m reduced to. I didn’t want to see him be another Joe Thomas and be one of the all-time greats that never got to do anything because he’s attached to a pile of shit for his whole career.
Garrett understandably said he had concerns about the team winning after the Watson fiasco and in order to stay he needs to see a viable plan to be a contender. I would have to imagine this means the Browns have some sort of plan at QB. I’m not sure any of the vets are enough to change Garrett’s mind, so I guess that leaves Sanders?
Saw a headline in my news feed about how hard Watson is working to come back from his Achilles tear. No idea why. Not sure who that benefits. Or maybe it’s just good PR that his people put out to make it seem like he’s doing his best so he can keep his contract.
I guess Garrett only really cared about the money, and “winning” was just leverage to milk the Browns for every penny he could get out of them. Surely another team would be willing to pay him out as well, but here we are. And that’s fine, get paid young man, but let’s stop pretending you ever cared about winning.
I am sure it’s this. Watson is so done in the league.
I also wonder if there is a benefit to being the best player on a bad team, like it gets you extra attention or something. I really don’t know. It seems more common for good players to get frustrated being stuck on a bad team, but maybe there is a personality that likes that situation.
I agree that it seems like he could get a deal just as good or even better elsewhere, but maybe not. Maybe it really is 100% about the money and that’s the best deal he is going to get. (And since he’s a professional I wouldn’t have any problem with that at all if he was being honest about it.)
Agree but Joe Thomas never got a contract like that.
Somebody can’t care about money AND winning?
I can’t blame him. Playing for a championship team is great and all, but as a non-QB, and especially as a defensive player, I’m not going to fault him for $160M for 4 years with $123M of that guaranteed. What sort of dumb team other than Cleveland does that for a defender?
“Winning” isn’t food on the table and he wasn’t going to get that kind of payday from another team.
If he didn’t take that sort of deal and the details got out, I’d question his sanity, not laud him for his principles.
Again, I don’t blame him for taking the money, BUT he demanded a trade to “a contender” then chose to stay with the shit team that’s not won anything his entire career because they threw the farm at him, demonstrating he cares not a whit about winning.
While Garrett is on the top of the list, he’s not far ahead of other highly-paid DEs. Including Maxx Crosby who just recently got a new deal. I would not be shocked if at some point during the preseason we see another DE get paid more. For that matter, he only has $1M more in guaranteed (read: real) money than Nick Bosa; they are paid almost identically from that metric.
That’s just the list for DEs, though when I looked up a list of highest-paid defensive players the top 3 are still DEs.
(There is less info there than my first link, which is why I provided the other link.)
It’s probably just an example of a guy who is saying he’s leaving to get a “better” job elsewhere (as in, a better situation, not just more money) as a stunt to get a raise. While that happens in almost every industry (I’ve seen it in places I’ve worked at too), it’s always something of a jerk move.
Sometimes it’s a legitimate situation where a person is really unhappy, and they are bribed to stay anyway, but even then it’s fair to say they’re selling out.
One thing about Winston is that he can be fun to watch. His turnover rate is frustratingly high; I believe that’s why he never got near the upper tier of QBs. But it’s because he takes risks and sometimes those pay off. If he’s your QB, buckle in for the roller coaster.
I believe he has the highest interception percentage of any active QB at 3.5%. But that goes along with slinging the ball a ton, sometimes with a lot of success, so it’s not all bad. If he didn’t have an upside he wouldn’t still be in the league.
I’m ok with that. There won’t be drama. He comes in knowing he’s not seen as the long term solution but he still has a chance to shine. The Giants should take a QB at number 3. I’m very surprised that some mock drafts have them taking a different position. Sanders should be available at 3. Which of course brings in its own drama.
Not me. His stats were actually very good last year. On paper he’s a top ten QB, even if he’s not at the very top as he once was. Not to mention, he reportedly has a very good history with O’Connell, the HC of Minnesota, so he might actually get along better there than most places.
It’s just all the other crap that goes along with that, that’s the problem. And to me that’s a deal-killer, and I guess it was for the Vikings too.
It’s true he’s not the guy he once was. And I’m sure he’ll just get worse.
It’s just that he’s still probably the best QB on the market right now (which is a low bar at this point), as far as being able to perform on the field.
Here is an article about Rodgers and O’Connell, to back up what I said before; they go way back apparently.
