NFL Coaching carousel, who stays and who goes?

Browns completed a second interview with Hue Jackson which is a positive sign. Anyone have any opinions about him? I don’t know enough about him. But I do like that they’ve got a shot at a candidate that seems in demand, rather than having to hire a “who the fuck is that?” 9th choice. But they didn’t make him an offer apparently, which isn’t a good sign.

Browns land Hue. The funny thing is that I have no faith in their ability to hire Hue, but the fact that the Giants seemed to be targeting him makes me think maybe he’s decent.

In any case, getting him early on and giving them a shot at good coordinators is really nice over waiting until after the superbowl to grab your coaches.

Hue Jackson’s had an impressive career as an assistant coach. He went 8-8 with a truly horrific Raiders team in his one season as a HC. He’s probably better than most of the other options currently available.

His name always sounds to me like it should be Huge Action.

Hue Jackson is the best possible coach the Browns could have landed. Frankly, I can’t believe he took the job. I thought for sure they’d be forced to hire some jabrone I never heard of before.

Story going around is that, during interviews, Jackson said he wouldn’t take the job if he’d be required to play Johnny Manziel.

And, rumor has it, he was told essentially, “No problem- we’re finished with that loser.”

It’s a very similar resume to Belichick and Shanahan (and probably a lot of guys who washed out of their second job as well).

Yes, I had read that Jackson recommended they move on from Johnny “Billy” Manziel. Can’t believe anyone would trade for him. And honestly, I don’t even care. Just cut bait and draft another QB. Jackson did pretty well with Dalton so hopefully he can work some magic with Austin Davis or rookie QB.

Chip Kelly now HC of the Niners. Interesting move. That team needs a ton of work rebuilding, and Kelly has demonstrated that he’s not great at that aspect. I kinda feel like this is a set up for another failure, as opposed to going to a team that has talent but not strong coaching.

Kelly has demonstrated that he’s not great at being a GM. As long as he stays away from that side of things, I think he has a chance to do well with SF.

Trent Baalke do has complete roster control in San Francisco, and his staff includes Tom Gamble, who Kelly worked well with in Philadelphia. It’s an interesting mix of football philosophies, but I’ve never seen an offense as bad as the 2015 49ers, so this is definitely an upgrade. I wonder if Chip will keep DC Eric Mangini.

Thank goodness Kelly ends up in San Francisco, because if he had ended up coaching the Giants I might have had to stop watching football.

Regarding Manziel: the Browns treatment of this guy continues to be utterly mystifying, at least to me. First of all, I don’t know how you can conclude from a half season total of just about exactly league average performance that he can’t play in the NFL, such that you’re willing to just sink a first round draft pick.

But even if you have decided to move on, why make it so obvious? You’re utterly torpedoing your own leverage when it comes to trying to trade him. Other teams don’t want to offer you anything because you’ve made it clear you’re going to cut him if you can’t trade him so why give up anything of value? It just seems weird and petty and self-destructive… but I guess that’s the Browns.

I think that no other teams except possibly Dallas would even consider picking up Manziel, much less trading something of value for him. I’m guessing that Jerry Jones will probably try to acquire him. Whether or not that will end up working out is a big mystery.

Doug Pederson goes to the Eagles and Dirk Koetter gets promoted at the Bucs. Any teams left Head Coachless now?

Not sure if previously mentioned, but Jints promote McAdoo.

As an Eagles fan I am warning Niners fans, you won’t find a bigger asshole in the NFL than Chip Kelly. I give it two years before he burns down your franchise. Mark my words.

I don’t know if you noticed, but the Niners were burned to the ground already. When Yo Gabba Gabbert is your best option at quarterback you have nowhere to go but up. Kelly will succeed simply on the basis of diminished expectations, at least for a few years.

Did he also cheer when opposing players got hurt?

I admit to not wanting to punish myself by watching Bears games, but I don’t get why the Bears’ season would instill more confidence in Gase. The Bears went 6-10, were the 23rd ranked scoring offense, 21st in yardage, and 23rd in passing yardage, which is pretty darn close to their ranks last year. He didn’t have to deal with Brandon Marshall, although Alshon Jeffrey seemingly isn’t very pleased, so I’m not sure about the “leadership” aspect.

Browns hired Ray Horton as DC. Bad move. They need one of those ex-HC types who’s been a proven DC before to really take control of that defense and whip them into shape. Ray Horton is not very good.

They hired Al Saunders and Pep Hamilton as some sort of offensive assistants. Maybe sort of psuedo-OC positions. That’s more promising.
