NFL Draft 2012

I gave my co-workers (bosses, actually) my own draft guide, with nine players listed as Round One options for the 49ers. A.J. Jenkins was not on there, but I did list him under Round Three wideout options. At least I know who he is, while the radio hosts are scratching their heads and Googling the name.

Those boots are made for raping, and that’s just what he’ll do
one of these days he’s a gonna rape all over you.*

Changed my mind. Ginger QB will hit the ground running and play 10 years, winning 14 superbowls. DeCastro will end up in a stall with Big Ben and retire.

Half the picks in the first round were the results of trades. Fascinating.

The mock draft exercise was good for that, at least. Interesting pickup. Surprised that Fleener hasn’t come off the board yet. At least the Texans got Mercilus, though I’m not sold on him over Perry.

Tomorrow should be interesting. Poor Beef.

Look at it this way. The best guard in the NFL won’t have the effect that even a solid QB will. I like Wheedon (not in the first, but hey, such is life) and I think he could be a solid NFL QB. Look on the bright side.

So, who have been the gigantic reaches so far, in all of y’all’s opinion? Irvin comes to mind, as does Barron. Is Martin that much better than Lamar Miller?

First would be Ryan Tannehill. Second would be Ryan Tannehill. And third would be … Ryan Tannehill.

Once we get to the 7th and more biggest reaches (4, 5, and 6 were all Ryan Tannehill), I’d have to go with Bruce Irvin, Stephon Gilmore, and then Shea McClellin (ETA: AJ Jenkins too). I didn’t think any of them had a first round grade.

I don’t think so, but I’m often wrong. Hell, I like Wilson better than Martin too.

I participated in another community mock draft over on reddit. I traded the 49ers’ 5th, 6th, and 7th Round picks to move up in the 4th Round to pick Jenkins at #117. I didn’t have the pick number right, but I may be the only guy in the world who mocked Jenkins to the 49ers.

And now we can get rid of all the flash, hype, and popularity of the first round and get down to the real NFL stuff. I like the 2nd - 4th rounds so much better than the first.

Even Gruden just sounded kinda down/dismissive about the Weeden pick and GRUDEN PRAISES EVERYTING.

Well, for one, they could’ve had both. Weeden was not a hot commodity, there’s an 80% chance he’d be there in the 2nd round for the Browns and I think a 50/50 shot he’d be there with the third pick. Who were they afraid of snatching him up that they had to draft him in the first?

Second, if you spend a first round pick on a QB, you’re committed to that guy for at least 2 or 3 years. Which means we miss out on the good QB class of next year. Weeden not only costs a first round pick, he comes with the opportunity cost of not having Barkley/Jones/whoever instead.

The Browns had a great chance to completely redefine their offense by being a top 3 running team in the NFL all in one go. And their defense is already decent. And they could’ve plugged a better, younger QB into that machine next year. I mean, they’re not doing shit in 2012 unless Weeden is the quickest learner ever, and it’s not like being 28 makes you smarter or more experienced at football when you spent the intervening years playing baseball.

Ugh.

Browns board Richardson thread, 3 pages. Weeden thread, 19 and counting.

I know. I’m so used to having a pick that’s analyzed to shit in the first half or the first half of the first half. 23 seems so…distant.

Mostly the same and exactly the same.

I don’t usually melt on draft day. Usually it takes until halftime of week 1.

Ignoring age, what are Weeden’s prospects as a QB?

Quite good, actually. Good arm, he seems poised both on the field and in the ESPN studios. Projects confidence. He’s better than Colt McCoy, I can tell you that. Don’t fret, and don’t rape.

Well, on the plus side, there was no rush on the WRs and all of the RT prospects are still there.

The Browns should take Hill at #37 if he falls, and then trade back up to get whichever of the RT prospects (martin, massie, glenn) falls. Since Hill was a possibility at #22, that’d make up for a lot.

Dude’s 29, worst case senario he spends his rookie contract handing the ball off to Richardson and then retires.

Of course Richardson spends his rookie contract getting leveled in the backfield 'cause you have no O-line!

I kinda like Alshon Jeffery more than Hill.

They probably should grab another 2nd if they can to grab an OL, though that likely means they won’t be getting anyone decent for the secondary. Still some good CBs on the board.

No TEs in the first round, 10 D-linemen.
