NFL Draft: Ever been? (And what are your thoughts on this year's?)

Well sure it’s best for him not to be drafted by the Giants, but my wish to see him in New York was a completely selfish one. (And, anyway, he still had a very good college career; he didn’t live up to the hype, but coming out of high school there was nowhere to go but down.)

It varies from draft to draft. I have no idea how next year’s draft class is supposedly shaping up (though it’s mostly guess-work this early), so you make a good point: they may know something I don’t and be thinking long-term.

Perhaps… but you won’t get a stud OL that late. But definetly a solid OL.

IMO, they should have gone after Jordan Gross. WRs are a crap shoot. Remember when the Niners jumped like 10 spots to get superstud WR J.J. Stokes? Well he didn’t end up so good, did he?

Actually, at the risk of seeming just way to pleased with myself, I want to revisit my “predictions” in this thread:
[ul]
[li]McGahee to go to the Pats with their second pick. No way he lasts until round 2. Even if the Pats chicken out, he’ll never get past the Raiders. Okay, Pats traded the pick to Baltimore, but McGahee goes 4 picks later to Buffalo. (watsonwil, Henry is a hard slashing runner, a good receiver, barely adequat on blitz pickups, fumbles way too much, and just signed a 1 year contract extension. Some writing wasn’t necessarily on the wall, but there were stencil marks.)[/li]
[li]I think the Eagles go for either ran edge rusher or a stud MLB, but they might have to trade up to get either. If they sit in place they might still go DE, but might also look at TE. THey need WR help, but I don’t see them spending another 1st rounder on it this year. Round 1: Jerome McDougal (DE). Round 2: LJ Smith (TE).[/li]
[li]The Saints to package 2 picks to move up and grab one of the top 2 CBs (which one depends on how much people are scared by Newman’s shoulder. Teams who pass on him because of this will be making a mistake, IMO.) Got the trade right, but Newman was gone. They went stud DT instead of Trufant. #6 was probably too high for Trufant, anyway. Call this one half-right, but I bet they really wish Newman had slid one more spot.[/li]
[li]As for Dorsey: 7th round or a preferred free agent. Why? Gino Toretta. We’ll find tou tomorrow.[/li]
[li]I think the browns go O-line, though who they pick will depend upon whoi is sitting there. The LB crop this year is too weak to go round 1 without need, and if they thought their need was that great they would have found a way to keep the guys they had. Round 1: Jeff Faine (C). Round 2: Chaun thompson (OLB). Which pissed me off, because I really wanted him to slip to the Bucs.[/li]
[li]Everybody has Suggs going to Arizona, but I’m personally not so sure. he Cards have gotten burned before both on hometown heroes (Plummer) and D-line “studs” with question marks (pick one). I think they should move back a few slots and pick up a DT or secondary help, but if they stay at 6 I wouldn’t be shocked to see them grab Leftwich, Trufant, or Kennedy. Snubbed Suggs. traded back. Grabbed Bryant Johnson (WR) & Calvin Pace (DE). Call it half right. They moved back, but the top DT’s were all gone so they went DE instead.[/li]
[li]I think the Bears drop out of #4, probably for the Jets or Saints. Dead on. Traded with Jets.[/li]
[li]Hard to say on Boller. After the Ravens there really isn’t a team with a QB need, but we all saw with McCalister that need doesn’t mean everything. I could see him slipping way down if the Ravens pass Ravens passed. Slipped to #19, where the Ravens traded up to get him.[/li]
[li]I also disagree with Calico going to Tennessee in round 1. They need receiver help, but that is a reach and Tennessee doesn’t usually reach. Tennessee did not reach. They got Calico in round 2.[/li]
[li]Jets go defense unless Detroit or Texas pull a rabbit out of the hat. But do they go “the next Warren Sapp” or “an actual shutdown corner”. Both are needs, and both would be close ot Herman Edwards heart. Dewayne Robertson(DT).[/li]
[li]**DT at #4 never made that much sense for Duh-Bears, anyway (unless they are planning to dump one of their battleships). Options at #13 look quite interesting. If Bailey get past teh Rams he might get tagged as a replacement for Colvin. He certainly has the speed to collapse the edge. ** They go for speed on the edge, but it’s a lineman. Michael Haynes (DE). Call it half right.[/li]
[li]If Boller gets by the Ravens, he could be the next reason for a Kordel collapse. Boller gets by teh Ravens once, but not twice. Which leads us to . . .[/li]
[li]They probably take a DE at #22, unless they luck into Bailey at #13. (McDougal, Haynes, Peterson, Kelsay–depending on how things fall out.) A wildcard is Rex Grossman or potentially even McGahee, depending upon how much of Thomas’ miseries last year they grade to an O-line crippled by injuries. Having grabbed an edge rusher (thoguh not Bailey) at #14 (slide 1 spot with Pats) they grab . . . Rex Grossman (QB). [/li]
[li]Detroit won’t drop down below #3. they want a stud WR and both Houston and the Jets need one, too. Detroit stays at #2. They take Charles Rogers (WR).[/li]
[li]I don’t think Detroit has soured on rogers at all. See above.[/li][/ul]
okay, I’m not going to bother tallying the score, but I feel pretty smart right now.

I wonder if I can get a job with ESPN. Kiper is definitely slipping. He had pretty zero insightful commentary today. They could have grabbed any stiff and had him read verbatim out of Mel’s drafgt report and gotten just as much value (and probably a better haircut.)

Gotta agree with VarlosZ on this one, though there is a slight chance the Simms will be practice suaded if King looks very sharp in training camp. Gruden generally likes to have 4 QBs in camp to let guys rest their arms a bit more. I doubt he will go far into camp with 5, though. My guess is that Matthews is first out the door.

Gotta disagree with ISiddiqui. Not about Johnson, who I agree is a crap shoot. But I don’t think Gross was anywhere near good enough to take at #3. Maybe they could have traded down, but receiver is a real need for them and I think Johnson (even with his faults) has a better chance of making a positive contribution this year than Gross.

That actually is pretty impressive. I bow to your superior knowledge of the draft. . . this year.

I had no real point. I really don’t know enough about it!

My real question is best framed by the following comment by **ISiddiqui **

The question I have then is this: is it more important to have a stud WR and a solid OL player or vice versa. (I feel a “depends” answer coming on!)

This is where I am at a disadvantage. I knew I shouldn’t draw my football analysis from Fantasy Football numbers!

VarlosZ, you think his draft knowledge is impressive, you should debate Spiritus Mundi about Gödel…

Spiritus, it’s just odd that King opted to resign with the Bucs and then have Gruden pick up three more QBs (not quite certain that’s the timeline, but it’s close). He’s got to be steamed. I assume that they still haven’t resigned Johnson, but that’s got to be their priority, one would think.

I’m pretty stoked about the Raven’s draft so far.

NCAA record holder for most sacks in a season - Terrell Suggs

I can’t believe no one picked him up before 10. I can’t believe there are people in the NFL that wouldn’t draft a STUD (most likely the best in the draft, a possible 1st overall before the combine) defensive end because of a weak 40 time. How many yards does a DE need to run to get to a QB? like 7 yards. Its all about explosiveness, and Suggs has that in spades.

So they got Suggs, AND the QB they had been drooling over, as well. Boller has a canon for an arm (60 yards on his knees, whoa!)

I would have liked to see them pick up a WR in the later rounds, but there’s still time for that.

The defense is coming back baby!

Wow, what a shockingly good draft for Detroit so far.

1 - Rogers (awesome)
2 - Boss Bailey (Awesome, and no one thought he would fall that far)
3 - Redding (good pick up to learn from an aging Porcher)
4 - Artose Pinner (not sure about this, but round 4 is the Black Hole for the Lions)
5 - Terrance Holt (awesome - good solid safety that is needed)
5 - James Davis (again, not sure about this)
6 - David Kircus (hometown favorite, could replace Foster/Anderson)
7 - Hasn’t happened yet

Hey, the Lions grabbed two of the featured “brothers”; Boss Bailey and Terrance Holt. I have to agree, the Lions are looking pretty good.

Lions fans should be pleased with Artose Pinner. He’s no Barry Sanders, but he’s a solid runner who never coughs up the ball and can produce yards. We (The University of Kentucky) used him as our primary runner, as well as a primary target for screen passes. He’s not a “superstar” back like Willis McGahee or Larry Johnson, but he can be productive.

It’s interesting to me to see the high ratings given to the Bengals by some of the national publications for this draft. Maybe Marvin Lewis is making a difference. The local “poll” on the Cincinnati Enquirer website has 72% grading it an A, 23% a B, with just a smattering going lower. I’m not a Bengals fan, though I live here, but I would like to see them at least do better. And I wouldn’t mind seeing Marvin Lewis succeed where the “Good Ol’ Boys” have failed.

  1. Why the hell did the Texans waste a pick on a QB that high when their team has so many holes? They already have a 2nd year franchise QB, why the hell did they pick a rookie QB that high?

  2. Minnesota- umm what the hell are you doing? You will still have to pay 7th pick money. Trying to blame Baltimore for your stupidity only makes you look worse (if possible).

  3. Saints- fired the wrong guy. The loss of their GM was noticable in their massive overreach in the first round. Oy.

  4. ESPN. Having 3 different crawlers going is enough to cause seizures guys. Also running the same 4 Ads over and over was a bit lame (other then the great “Wingman”, that song is now stuck in my head ". . . but she’s towing an anchor, a junior investment banker, whose talking about herself and not much more. . . " ). Also too many break aways- the player counsel wasn’t very good. PTI was too gimmicky.

  5. Arizona. Again. Clueless is charitible. Way to turn the 6th pick into nothing. Picking by dartboard guys?

  6. Bills. Umm, your defense still stinks and you added older players on the downside. You lost a playmaking WR. Your QB is old (NFL wise- lots of miles and hits on Drew). Travis Henry just came off a major year. You just signed Gary. You missed the playoffs again. So take McGahee? Huh? While Henry still has a few areas to work on, he still is quite young, and did have a sterling year (maybe there is long-term signability issues?). Major gamble.

  1. Baltimore. Getting Suggs and Boller (a top 10-15 on most boards) for the cost they paid was great. Musa Smith was a good pick as well. Given the great results Baltimore has had with the draft over the last 3 years (other then Travis Taylor- put up or shut up time kid) the Ravens are ready for a run. They took a bit of a risk giving up a 1 and a 2 for a 1, but not nearly the risk the Bills took. The Ravens have huge holes at the QB position (Redman’s back, no decent vets), believe they will be a playoff team (thus picking lower next year), and had a very good read on Boller. Its an intelligent risk to take, to possible get a franchise QB.

  1. Dallas sitting tight and taking a shutdown corner. If Newman’s shoulder is ok, he will be a very good upgrade. Nice young secondary growing there in Dallas. Often the best trade is none at all.

  2. Jags get their QB of the future, and show alertness hustling that card up there (to keep him away from Baltimore). Good job.

  3. Steelers get a prototype safety. The top player at the position of biggest need. ESPN said about him:

Hopefully he can cover better then Flowers. . . .

  1. Hey the Bengals didn’t blow it. Steinback was an especially nice pick in the second round. Lewis clearly gets it, hopefully he will be given enough power.

  2. The mighty P-men had a nice draft and picked up 2 more high draft picks next year. Nice.
