I need help completing a metaphor, the details of which I can’t remember, as I was like 7 or 8 at the time…
Who was it who put Bears QB Jim Mcmahon on the DL that one time, when he had MCMahon on a “hit list” that he had written on a sweat sock tucked in his belt?
Any other details surrounding the incident would be appreciated.
Charles Martin. Was a schmuck…I mean, Packer. And this was back when the teams still -really- hated each other.
As I recall, he came up behind McMahon about 5 seconds after the play was over and slammed him down on his shoulder. This is back when Soldier Field had artificial turf*, as well, plus, Jimbo was rather…fragile, so, his shoulder separated.
The only other number besides McMahon’s #9 that I specifically remember from the towel was Walter’s #34.
*Artificial turf is proof of the existence of Satan. It was invented because grass couldn’t grow in hell.
We go Green Bay…We go Green Bay
We watch em Packers… We watch em play…
Packer fan reporting for duty.
The name you seek is Charles Martin. Defensive lineman for the Packers during the Forrest Gregg days. Ahh, the distant memories of a truly bitter rivalry enhanced by Mike Ditka and Forrest Gregg.
Truly one of the cheapest shots delivered in Packer history.
Well after McMahon had passed the ball and was basically standing there watching the play unfold Mr. Martin strode up behind Mr. McMahon. He then proceeded to pick him up and then toss him down on his shoulder. Never the same quarterback again. Shame to see that as a result.
Ken Stills shot on Matt Suhey still brings a chuckle though.
I often think I hate the Vikes more than the Bears but that doesn’t make sense because the Vikes are just another expansion team.
Losing Tim Lewis to that hit on Willie Gault really bit though.
Payton dragging Mark Lee out of bounds by his facemask and Lee getting the Penalty was interesting.
But I digress…
The Packer-Bear rivalry was at a fever pitch in the mid 80’s fueled by two coaches who would have been willing to go toe to toe with each other. Charles Martin took out McMahon and had a list of other people to hurt on a towel(I’m pretty sure it was a towel) he wore at his waist. This atmosphere was a reflection of the coaching staffs. The rivalry has almost become benign through the 90’s but the Bear’s have shown promise over the last two years.
