NFL Offseason Thread: Combine Edition

Can’t teams only trade draft picks and not players unless there is a CBA?

My understanding is the same as yours. I’d like for someone to be able to definitively say, though.

I think, if Peterson is there at #6, that’s where teams will try trading for him, because I can’t see the Niners passing him up. Amukamara would be a good second choice, but a second choice nonetheless. If their other top options are gone, I could even see them trade up to #5 for Peterson.

IIRC, Kiper’s 3-round mock has the 49ers getting Peterson, Kaepernick, and OLB Donatay Moch (from Nevada, like Kaeper). I’d cream my shorts if we got those three.

Yeah, that’s what all the mocks are saying about the 49ers pick there, and there’s obviously something to it. What if Newton and Gabbert are there? It could go any way. I think Harbaugh would take a quarterback, assuming he really likes one of those top two.

Again, this is shaping up to be a very fun draft.

I don’t see this comparison at all. I’ve never, ever heard anyone who knew him say Tebow was disingenous. And people have looked, hard.

He really is a boy scout. Now you may not want that, and some teams may not either, but a guy who is a boy scout and one who fakes it are two VERY different things.

And really, giving the media scripted answers is fine – do you want a rookie QB who freely speaks his mind with the media? (Do I need to cite Crash Davis on this?) The rap on Newton is (supposedly) that coaches also feel he’s being fake with them. Again, I’ve never heard rumors of coaches/teammates saying Tebow was phony.

I shudder at the thought of either of those guys. Gabbert is Alex Smith 2.0. Newton could be really good, and fun to watch, but his “plutonuim-grade raw material*” could just as easily nuke the team. However, Harbaugh seems to be a pretty good judge of QBs, so I’ll defer to his judgement if he pciks one of those. Hopefully it will be a moot point. I’m a Kaepernick fanboy anyway, going back a few years.

*: Actual Harbaugh quote regarding Cam Newton

Certainly.

If Peterson is there at #6, the Browns probably grab him or trade down. CB is one of the few positions that isn’t a pressing need on the team, but everyone raves about him like he’s the clear BPA, so I think they’d find themselves lucky he fell that far and snatch him up. Peterson/Haden would allow Sheldon Brown to move to FS, which makes a badass coverage unit which frees up Ward to do his wrecking ball thing. The rest of the defense would suck, but at least the secondary would be badass.

Someone should start a draft thread, btw, we’re only a few weeks out. I’ll do it if no one else does.

And my point is that they haven’t. You can’t tell me on one hand that the guy gives scripted answers and then say he isn’t fake. Maybe most of the players are, but the point is the degree with Tebow. He may believe it, he may act on it, but I think the guy has been programmed. I’ve met a lot of guys like him, and maybe it’s anecdotal, but he’s doing a bad job of acting. Like a foreigner who tries to speak in idiom but mixes it up, he says things that, to me, just sound wrong. He’s full of it.

No, they aren’t. The end result is the exact same.

Yeah, funny, that. I have never seen Tebow say anything where I got the impression he was being honest. Everything I have ever seen him say was cliche poorly delivered, like a guy who knows what the lines are supposed to be, but doesn’t know why he’s saying them. Your results may vary, but I’ve known that guy, Tebow is that guy, and that guy isn’t honest.

The only difference is people seem to really WANT to believe Tebow. People don’t seem to want to believe Newton. At least Newton can throw the ball.

My original impression about this draft is proving accurate; the Eagles are about to get royally screwed. They hold an extremely valuable trade chip and won’t be able to cash in simply because of poor timing.

Started a draft thread.
