46 TD v 35, a rushing TD is just as valuable as a passing one, in fact I would argue a QB contributes more in a rushing TD than a passing TD. I passing TD primarily involves two players, the passer and the receiver (with a much lower profile involvement from the players protecting the passer, running alternative routes etc), when a QB rushes for a TD they are the only player primarily involved (with a lower profile involvment of those blocking etc).
Different people emphasise different things and I don’t think it was a obvious as Atamasama implied.
Myles Garret winning DPOTY was really the only really obvious pick this year.
Even as a Pats fan, I’d probably give the slight edge to Stafford based on total TDs and INTs/fumbles, but Maye definitely has a legit argument. Maserschmidt’s comment that Maye “was nowhere close to MVP” is complete nonsense, IMO.
“Different people emphasise different things” was supposed ot answer that:
Stafford had:
More TDs
Lower interception rate
More passing yards
A stud receiver to help boost his stats
Maye had:
Higher completion percentage
More yards per attempt
Higher passer rating (an attempt to determine passing efficiency in a single number)
A rushing threat
An easy SOS to help boost his stats.
You can choose which of these you think is most important. You can argue about the calculation but Maye’s higher passer rating implies his better completion percentage and yards per attempt is more valuable than Stafford’s better TD rate and Int rate. On top of this Maye in unarguable more valuable as a runner. This ignores the quality of teammates and opposition which cloud things further and subjective things like entertainment value if you think that should be included.
(shakes fist at Atamasama and ShadowFacts) Fair enough. I might be overreacting to be in the vicinity of the stadium and hearing the endless, endless stream of hype.
Miami and Arizona’s new coaching regimes are actively shopping Tua and Kyler, respectively. Miami is willing to eat some salary to facilitate a deal (Tua got a four-year, $212.1 million extension in July 2024).
While all of you are watching the SB today, I will be on a day-long excursion on Doubtful Sound in Manapouri, New Zealand. I will probably not see a score until the game is over.
When I get back to our B&B this evening, I will visit this thread to learn the valuable knowledge and keen insight of the Dopers.
Sonny Jurgensen, who was a Hall of Fame quarterback for the Eagles and the then-Redskins from the late '50s through the early '70s, passed away at age 91.
Jurgensen’s accomplishments were sometimes overshadowed by other star quarterbacks of his era – particularly Bart Starr and Johnny Unitas – and he spent much of his career on losing teams, but he was considered one of the best passers of his generation, and led the NFL in passing yards five times; he was named (along with Starr and Unitas) to the league’s 1960s All-Decade team.
After his retirement, he remained connected to the Redskins as a broadcaster and an informal advisor, and remained a beloved figure among the team’s fans.
I became a Washington fan during the transition from Jurgensen to Kilmer - two very different throwing styles, with Sonny being a delightful kind of gunslinger. RIP.
Falcons rookie linebacker/edge rusher James Pearce Jr. remains in jail in Miami today, after being arrested on Saturday on numerous charges (many of them felonies), due to a domestic incident between himself and WNBA player Rickea Jackson.
The Falcons drafted Pearce with the #26 pick in the first round last year; at the time, there were character questions surrounding him.
Yeah I really don’t understand what they’re thinking. Who right now do they think is going to be any better? Maybe they should just swap with each other.
