NFL WEEK 12 Angry Men

So Myles Garrett has been suspended “indefinitely” for trying to inflict serious brain damage on Mason Rudolph (appeal pending), Larry Ogunjobi was suspended one game (upheld, fine rescinded), and Maurkice Pouncey gets suspended 3 games (appeal pending). Mason Rudolph, the original instigator, will likely be fined, as will some of the players who left the bench to engage in the scrum. Seems pretty fair all around. Certainly the Browns will suffer the most, losing their best defensive player, and, in addition to the loss of their safety to IR, may have a rough go the rest of the season. Luckily, they get the Dolphins this weekend. Along with the debacle that was the Kaepernick workout, I’m glad to get back to some football.

A super interesting slate of games this week, with some actual playoff implications thrown in to boot.

Two winning teams battling for first place in their division on the Thursday night game. Much better than a couple of crap teams playing games they don’t want to on a day they don’t want to. I was suprised how little Deshaun Watson impressed me last week, but everyone has off games. The Colts defense and their offensive lines (both problems for a long time in Indy) are playing pretty well so far, so I expect a pretty good game tonight. The injury to Marlon Mack (fuck you fantasy football) will make things much more difficult for the Colts, but I expect them to win tonight.

The Seahawks/Eagles game has to be the marquee of the early games. Seattle sits at 8-2, but with only a 21 point differential, so I remain skeptical of just how good they are. But the 5-5 Eagles aren’t any great shakes either. Russell Wilson is having a fantastic season, but what is up with Carson Wentz? Anyone? I was told he was primed to be the next young, elite QB, but he’s having a relatively pedestrian season so far this year. A good chunk of it is his receiving corp has dropped a ton of passes, but I’ll be interested to see how he does Sunday. Still, he’s better than average, and has a really soft schedule after the Seahawks, so he’ll get a chance to prove his worth.

The rest of the early games seem like a bunch of bad, but I’ll probably check out the Raiders/Jets, mostly because I’m a bit surprised to see Oakland at 6-4 (-25 point differential, the only team with a winning record and a negative point differential). I only saw them when they played the Packers, and outside of Josh Jacobs who is having a great rookie year, they were not that impressive. So I’ll check them out against … ugh … the Jets.

Only two late games, but both should be a good watch. I’m starting to come around on Dak Prescott. This year, he’s certainly gotten to pad his stats against some really bad defensive teams, but he impressed me playing the Vikings. It will be interesting to see if what he can do against good defenses in the next 3 games (Pats, Bills, Bears). I still tend to lump him in with the “can play very good for short period of time and is efficient when he needs to be”, but a good game against the Pats this week or the Bills and Bears, will make things much more interesting.

Sunday night’s game is the one I’ve been looking forward to all year. I’m glad it got flexed to Sunday night, so I’m sure I can see it live. Aaron Rodgers said this week: “The way I look at it, we’ve got to beat them once at their place at some point. It would be nice to do it now.” With the Niners in the catbird seat for playoff seeding, a win Sunday night would be huge for the Packers. But even putting aside the long term implications, it should be a fun game to watch. The Packers coaches really need to help the O line, because David Bakhtiari has not been his usual great self, and that Niners pass rush is just brutal. On the other side of the ball, the Packers defense is, so far, taking full advantage of turnovers, but also are hyper aggressive and can be beat by big plays and a strong running game. And while the Niners’ running game has slowed down recently, it’s still their bread and butter. A fascinating matchup of two very good teams. What more could you want?

And Monday night is the next in the Lamar Jackson show. He’s a special talent, and fun as hell to watch, but I keep worrying that that much running by him will shorten his game playing career. It will be fun to see what adjustments the Rams make to try and contain him. Meanwhile, the Rams have been a rough watch this year, with the shine coming off McVay and Goff. Maybe they have something up their sleeve, but how the mighty have fallen…

There we are. Should be a good week.

In my opinion Seattle’s win over the previously unbeaten Niners was easily their most impressive one of the season but the 'hawks need to show that they can bring their “A” game more than “every so often.” Fun fact: the Seahawks haven’t lost to the “Iggles” IN Philly since the 1980s. We’ll see if that continues this Sunday.

Two very polarizing teams playing against one another Sunday afternoon. I’ll definitely be pulling for the one that’s based further north and east of the two.

I’m in agreement with the OP about the Sunday and Monday night games. Seattle @ Philly was originally the game slated for Sunday night; I’m glad the N.F.L. saw fit to change that. Monday night’s game should be fantastic. As a fan of the Seahawks (and having never been a fan of the Rams, anyway) I’m pulling 100% for the Ravens to win that one.

Go 'hawks!

Good game so far. Two pretty good teams playing pretty well. Not very exciting, but good, solid play.

Just to note that Myles Garrett’s appeal was denied.

I’d heard that earlier today on sports radio.

Oh and I agree Dak Prescott is pretty good, he’s a legit franchise QB that I expect Dallas can count on for a number of years to build around. Only a handful of teams can legitimately say that, so they are in pretty good shape.

I’m in D.C. this week. As you may know, there’s something kinda going on this week on Capitol Hill. But, aside from that, I’ve seen a bunch of stories on the local news about how cheap Redskins tickets are for Sunday, as low as $4. The Lions don’t have a national fan base so I assume that’s helping depress ticket prices. The Redskins are a bad bad team this season with only a couple of players worth watching, they’re the #1 argument against a longer season.

Passing defensive rankings of the teams Dak has played so far this year: 25th, 16th, 20th, 12th, 23rd, 21st, 17th, 25th, 19th, 30th.

Passing defensive rankings of the next 3 games: 2nd, 3rd, 10th.

I’m waiting to see how he performs against a good defense before I’ll join you on the “build around” status train. The fact he can pile up stats against bad NFL defenses is certainly helpful, but I’ll wait more 3 games before I’d commit to making him the highest paid player in the NFL.

I’m still waiting before I call him a “great” QB, let alone “elite”. If he manages to help his team win the NFC East (not that great of an accomplishment this year) then get maybe as far as the conference championship (which would be a bit of a feat as the 4th seed) via his own performance, then my praise might go higher.

The Colts got jobbed out if a fumble late in the game. Total horseshit.

There was an article in the Post this week about how the Nationals have supplanted the
Washington Football Team as the favorite sports team in DC. That’s big, because it’s always been a football town.

That is crazy to me as a former Redskins fan spending many formative years in NOVA in the 1980’s-early 1990’s due to my Dad being a career Army officer before my own enlisted service that took me far and wide and landed me in Cincinnati Metro in 1994, just in time for Dave Shula to prove his mettle.

Anyway, I have extremely fond memories of meeting Joe Jacoby and Dave Butz (at a Burke, VA jewelry store…my Dad kept telling me to thank them for their time and Dave Butz took me aside a moment and thanked me in return…I was like 12…it was cool!)

The Diesel. The Hogs. Insufferable Joe Thiesmann pre-coke monkey Taylor injury.

Charles Mann. Dexter Manley couldn’t read but knew sacking QB’s led to sacks of blow.
Wilbur Marshall. Trashcan. Mark Rypien, the most boring QB ever. Nick Bounaconti.

Huge highlights:

Timmy Smith, RB, Superbowl yards gained
Doug Williams, first black QB to win a SB

Finally: THE AGELESS Darrell Green and his tootsie roll socks. Fastest man in the NFL. Paced Jerry Rice his entire career. What an awesome player and dude.

Then can haz Dan Snyder, move to Cincy. Bye Dan.

From what I’ve read Dan Snyder has done just about everything in his power to burn that franchise to the ground and by the looks of things the loyal fans have finally, for the most part, given up. Shame.

Thought he was a Dolphin? Liked him and Dawson on “Inside the NFL.”

Loved cheering for Riggins as a kid. “Loosen up, Sandy Baby.”

Darrell Green was ridiculously fast. Was seemingly always in the finals of the speed portion of the NFL Skills competition (Nope: NFL’s Fastest Man. See: Pro Football Journal: NFL's Fastest Man Competition) they’d have on around the Pro Bowl. Him and Willie Gault. Great memories

I don’t know if the Texans win if TY Hilton is at 100 percent. Lot of drops from him that game. It doesn’t matter anyway: neither are beating Baltimore or New England on the road. Still, better than losing to the Colts by 3.

On Darrell Green. When you’re able to be competitive with guys like Ron Brown, who won a gold medal in the 4 X 100m relay at the Summer Olympics, you’re pretty damned fast. A list of pro football players and their documented track times here: Track and the NFL: Who's the fastest ever? - FloTrack

I had no idea Jacoby Ford was that fast. Sure didn’t play like it.

Sometimes, I slip something in there to see if people are really reading. Good work! Liked him on Inside The NFL too, RIP.

Underwear speed =/= pad speed.

I’m watching the first half of his game. He’s had 1 interception, 2 fumbles (one lost, one negated by penalty), and at least 3 missed passes. I get that he doesnt have his starting WRs, but he’s not playing well at all.

Apparently he fumbled a third time in this last sack but the Eagles recovered.

This Philly/Seattle game is a circus.

I’m a big fan of more aggressive coaching, but I’m not sure going for it on 4th and 1 on your own 45 in a tied game with 7 minutes left is a good idea. Especially when your defense hasn’t played well most of the day.
