So it’s now been 30 years since the Seahawks lost to the “Iggles” in Philly and their defense, in the last 7+ quarters, has been pretty darn good. They now have an extra day to get ready before taking the Vikings on at home. We’re comin’ down to “crunch time” in the N.F.L. regular season. Go, Patriots!
Well, Oakland was getting hype.
West Coast teams playing early on the East Coast rarely do well. Embarrassing loss for them.
So the Patriots escaped with the “W” today, eh? Not a very impressive win but I no longer doubt B.B. and T.B. I still expect the Patriots to make it to at least the A.F.C. championship game (yet again). But how much time does “Tom Terrific” truly have left as an N.F.L. quarterback?
I was telling my wife today, this is the first years where Tom Brady looked old and slow. He’s lucky he’s got a good offensive line and good receivers. Tom won’t have impressive stats this year, and his days of being a fantasy football QB are probably done. But he still might have enough to do whatever it takes to help his team get a 12-4 record and home field in the playoffs, or at least a first round bye.
To use a baseball analogy, Brady no longer has a great fastball, but he still has enough other tools in his toolkit to win big games.
What I’ve been hearing about his offensive line is that it’s not really very good this year. But he’s obviously been around and knows how to win. But I read, recently, that he’d like to play 3 or 4 more years in the N.F.L. and at this point I don’t know if that’s going to happen. Frankly, it doesn’t look likely.
The problem with being a QB is the older you get, the slower you get. The slower you get, the more often you get hit. The more often you get hit, the more likely you are to get injured. And the more injured you get, the slower you get…
Niners making a statement.
Yeah, they’re lookin’ pretty dominant. I think they’re a great bet to get to at least the conference semifinals in the playoffs.
Since Batwoman / Supergirl were repeats, at 7 I caught up some on my DVR. At some point I fell asleep. Just before halftime I woke up, looked at the score. and went back to my DVR.
I did tune in later to see that the Pack did at least get some points. I guessed theye were going to lose, but didn’t think they would do so much.
Brian
He doesn’t really have a good offensive line and good receivers. That’s what he’s been bitching about at the pressers after every victory. He doesn’t want to work with young receivers either - he was bitching after the Pats released Antonio Brown and Josh Gordon. A big part of the reason he doesn’t look good is because he doesn’t have anyone open to throw too before he gets hit - he’s got enough experience to dump it off before he gets clobbered, but that doesn’t help his stats. Having said that - 12-4? This year? They’ve got 2 absolute gimmes, they haven’t lost to the Texans since 2010, the Bills and the Chiefs are for real but both those games are in Foxboro.
The obvious fact is that Belichick has moved on from an offense-based team. That’s why the smart money is on Brady either retiring or going to another team at the end of the year - one that is willing to put the money and effort into having a first class offense.
Looking at NFL statistics, Wentz (40 fumbles in 51 games, .78/game) is second only to Winston (43 fumbles in 51 games, .84/game) since 2016 among active QBs. By comparison, Goff has 36 fumbles in 53 games (.68/game) and Cousins has 39 fumbles in 59 games (.66/game).
Hold my beer.[/Daniel Jones]
Is Jones going to start 50+ games though?
Why wouldn’t he? That’s only 3 more seasons. You don’t bench a QB you drafted 5th overall in three seasons. Hell, even Mariota didn’t get benched until his 5th season.
We’ll see. Mariota had a pretty good rookie year and broke some records, and a much better second year (26:8 TD:Int rate). He was good enough in his second year to give people hope that he had potential, and probably earned him some slack. The problem was that second year was his peak.
We’ll see if Jones has that kind of spark or just fizzles out.
Makes me remember a few years back when people were debating which of Mariota and Winston (based on the ~50% success rate on first round QBs) would be a success and which a bust.
In 2019, it’s looking like…neither. Neither is a bust, and neither is a superstar franchise QB. They’re both more or less serviceable starting QBs, each possessing more or less the strengths and flaws projected out of their college careers.
The predictability of their career paths has been the most unpredictable part of all.
The Bears won…that’s about all I can say about that.

On Sunday the Bears were Forrest, the Giants were Bubba.
The Packers were Jenny I guess.
