NFL playoffs - besides your favorite team, who are you rooting for?

Unfortunately, the Lions are starting to remind me more than a little of the Forrest Gregg-coached Packers from the mid-80s. Bear fans will still complain about all the cheap shots that the Pack took against the Bears in those days – and, frankly, they were right. Gregg had a bunch of goons, and I was embarrassed to be a Packer fan then.

wow, I had no idea. I knew about Suh of course, and Schwartz, but I didn’t know it was a team taught mentality. I may have to rethink this.

You need another team for your example. The Raider fans walk around with spikes around their heads and silver and black masks/paint… they are crazier than Al ever was. And you can’t use the Cowboys either, since Jerry Jones is insane and he’s never leaving… and his team has Lombardi’s.

The Eagles haven’t won a championship since 1960. I’m going to guess 1957 for the Lions. What about Cleveland? 1964 (before the SB era)? those are better choices than the Raiders. And the Vikings and Bills have had their stomachs ripped out in 4 SBs.

I’m going to still root for the Lions, but perhaps I’ll consider another team. I can only go with an NFC team, since all AFC teams are evil if they stand in the way of the Steelers.

If the Falcons would go back to their old Red uniforms, I’d root for them. And if I change my mind about the lions, the falcons are my pick.

I have no idea what you are talkking about. The Packers are all lightness and fair play. Forrest Gregg? Retired to Santo Domingo in '71. Charles Martin? Never played football after Western Alabama. The entire decade of the 80’s. The Packers simply took a vacation to build a school in Guatamala. It’s much easier that way.

I’m a Colts fan…

Noone in the AFC, that’s for sure. There is noone else left I can even tolerate.

In the NFC, I wouldn’t mind either the Saints, 49ers, or the Packers winning. I guess if I was forced to choose just one it’d probably be the Packers as I love Greg Jennings. Seems like a nice, thoughtful dude in interviews. I’ll be watching Peyton’s new team, the 49ers, very closely though.

ROFL. For me, it’s just '84 through '87 which are blocked out of my memory. Oh, and any mention of Tony Mandarich.

I’m a Niners fan. I wanted to go with Detroit too but I’ve been put off on Schrwartz since Niners @ Detroit the rest of the crap since then has been fuel for the fire. I’ll settle for not the Patriots.

I won’t mention Mossy Cade, James Lofton, and Eddie Lee Ivory…good guys, all! I prefer to remember players like Anthony Dilweg, Brent Fullwood, and Jeff Query.

In serious, though, Forrest Gregg seems like he was a really good man in general. Did the thuggey come from the top the way it does with Schwartz?

If you’re asking me to pick a specific team that I will root for if the Steelers don’t make the Super Bowl, the answer is none. I’ll root for the Russians to nuke the stadium that’s holding the AFC Championship Game. I root for only one team, period.

Now, if you’re asking me who I would prefer if I had no other choice, I’d prefer to see the Broncos or Texans win in the AFC. If it’s the Patsies v. Ratbirds I’ll hope that the NFC team creams the winner, whoever that may be. And yes, that may even end up being the Packers, whom I have grown to despise.

That leaves me with the Saints, really, who I would prefer only because the are the team left that I can find even the least bit of indifference about within the sea of hate.

Why? Because of last years’ Super Bowl? Jealousy? Too much mockery by their fans? Outside of dedicated Bears and Vikings fans, I don’t really hear many people at all saying they despise the Packers.

You’ll give yourself an ulcer.

Dilweg, at least, seemed to have a brain. Fullwood and Query were both dumb as a bag of hammers.

I’d always suspected so, even at the time. Gregg would talk about how he wanted “tough” players. For example, Chuck Cecil, who continues to be a bit of an asshat as a coach, started his playing career under Gregg, who seemed to really like him. In general, when you have an entire team of cheap-shot artists, you have to suspect it’s by design.

Looks like you have a little selective amnesia. Let me see if I can help you with that a little, don’t worry, I’m an unlicenced mammologist (as in mammaries).

That’s OK, you can pull your hands off your ears and stop saying “no no no no.” It really did happen, just like Nixon’s presedency.

Ahem

Everyteamhas crazy fans. The Raiders just get a lot more attention for it than most. Now that Al is dead the personal foul penalties that he encouraged will probably go away too, most of the record penalty yards from this year were from offsides, false starts, and holding. :smack:

Anyway, I am a Raiders fan, but I am rooting for Houston. I like the way they play football, and I like that they are getting it done for the first time in franchise history with a third string QB. Go Texans.

Two reasons. First, that GO PACK GO cheer that comes after every decent play when I have to go somewhere to watch the game. Suddenly there are 15 million Packer fans, and they all live near me, screaming that in my ear in unison20 times a game. Which takes me into the second point, these “fans” have been walking around all year talking about how it’s a foregone conclusion that the Packers have it locked up. Yeah, yeah, I have a thread, but guess what? They’re serious.

I respected the Packers when they won the Super Bowl last year. If someone else had to win I could at least stomach the Packers without puking. They simply outplayed the Steelers, and good on them. But leave it to the new bandwagon to ruin that goodwill.

Nah. It’s been that way for as long as I can remember.

It makes me think of the Jerry Glanville Oilers. Lots of talent, and a coach who gets the players to believe in themselves, but who also is an asshole who encourages jerkish behavior.

Boy howdy, Doors does not like his own medicine.

I don’t have any idea what you’re talking about.

Your link goes to a picture of a kitty holding onto a tree branch with the words “Hang in There, Baby!” on the bottom. I have no idea what you are talking about.

So it’s the fans, not the team, that makes you despise the Packers. Fair enough. I know exactly what you are talking about, as I have expressed to you before.

But you might want to get that log out of your eye.

If the Giants don’t win it, then first I’ll look for an underdog and work my way from there, with some eff you predjuices thrown in. My order of preference:

Texans
Lions
Ravens
Bengals
Falcons
Saints
Packers
Broncos
49ers (they were up a few spots higher a moment ago, then I remembered that bullshit in the '02 Wild Card round)
Patriots
Steelers

I got your kitty holding onto a branch with the words “Hang in There, Baby!” on the bottom right here, pal.
Takes a deep breath
Sorry guys, I got a little carried away there. I’m OK now.
