NFL Preseason

I bet Geno’s just a gold digger out to get money from a famous football player.

Heh. Thread winner so far…

I thought I read it was the curse of Ryan Fitzpatrick?

This actually worries me. Suisham isn’t the greatest kicker in the NFL, but he seemed to have figured out Heinz Field, which is a terrible field to kick on. Especially toward the open end of the stadium facing the river. Wind swirls badly there, and Suisham was a very good FG and PAT guy.

I know they just signed someone who was a former Saint and had a cup of cofee with the Browns, but I think the Steelers need to be combing the waiver wire and see who gets cut toward the end of training camp. There might be a better option out there. I think the Steeler defense will be particularly bad at the beginning of the season, and they can’t afford to have every drive start at the 35 or 40. Short kickoffs have plagued the Steelers for years, and their special teams are anything but special. They need to find a guy who can pound the ball into the endzone for touchbacks, especially if the offense is going to put a lot of points on the board as people have predicted.

I hope that vision of Landry is enough to get him cut for good. The kid is terrible, slow, and has no pocket presence at all. He just doesn’t look comfortable… In fact, he looks lost at times. He isn’t the only college QB star who couldn’t translate his game to the pros, but the Steelers whiffed badly on that choice. They wasted a 4th rounder on a guy who has yet to suit up for a game in his first two years, and is being challenged for the 3rd string job by some kid who can play receiver and QB, like Stewart (and Ward and Randel El). I’d rather see the Steelers pick up a kid who gets cut on the last day from some other team and put him on the practice squad and just say good-bye to Landry. He is never going to play in the NFL unless Ben and Gradkowski get hurt, and the Steelers can’t find anyone with a pulse to play under center. And only THEN, Landry would be a one week solution. The guy was so unimpressive, the Steelers went out and signed Gradkowski and made him the backup immediately. Unless I am missing something, Landry’s chance to impress was on Sunday night. He had the entire game and did nothing. I know James dropped a TD pass, but even if you give him that TD, Landry just failed to impress on so many levels. My feeling is that Colbert wants to keep him on the roster because his drafts have been less than productive. Admitting yet another mistake with a 4th round pick isn’t something he is eager to do, but at this point, he is a wasted roster spot. (Wasn’t he picked the same year Jarvis Jones was taken in round 1?)

They should have taken Zac Dysert out of Miami (Oh) instead in a later round, and let that kid learn under Ben. He could have been had for a 6th round pick, and if he didn’t pan out, no big loss.

It must be true, then! If ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter says it’s so, it’s so!

I would love to know what actually happened in that fight. Because from what little I have read, it wasn’t a sucker punch (not from normal definition standards, anyway). Geno and IK exchanged words, and Geno had his finger in IK’s face. IK apparently has a violent temper and a short fuse, so Geno made a mistake of spouting off to the wrong guy. Geno certainly didn’t expect to get punched, but that was his mistake in believing he wouldn’t be touched because he was thought to be the starting QB in NY. That shows a lot of arrogance and a lack of awareness on Smith’s part. And it also shows a lack of respect that IK had for his QB. Not defending IK at all. But Smith just learned the hard way that popping off to anyone is a good way to get your jaw broken.

IK screwed up royally, and is out of a job. I wonder if he will get a chance to play for someone else. The NY press (and the Jets) are going out of their way to bury the kid, and I have no idea what kind of player he is… But if he is good enough, someone will roll the dice on him again.

Actually, I think he did the Jets a favor. Geno isn’t the long-term answer at QB. The Jets need to move on and start looking for who they are going to have under center in 2016. Now they don’t have to waste another year of “growing pains” with Geno.

According to local reports, Josh Norman picked Newton off and was running it back for a TD. Newton chased him down and tackled him and they got into a shoving match. They had been jawing at each other since camp started. Just two competitive guys. They hashed it out in the locker room after practice. Not much of a story really.

Yeah, but you can say that about any Panthers news. On a related note, I will be sad to see Steve Smith go. Not just because he was a great player, but because his endzone celebrations and sideline rants are the only reason to watch NFL Network retrospective programming.

No, the curse of Ryan Fitzpatrick is he is doomed to wander from team to team in the NFL until his beard finds its true love.

The beard does cushion the blow when he gets hit in the jaw. Might not be a bad thing to have.

Guys, I already filled the beard joke quota.

So the Lions beat the (severely undermanned) Jets last night, and Ameer Abdullah looked good for a rookie RB. Of course, since he’s a Lion, he’ll be out with an exploded knee by week 6. On the plus side, by week 7 my Sundays will be freed up. :frowning:

Sorry I’m late about this, but both sides sat their starting QBs (it’s “only” the HOF game), and Gradkowski is still injured; I think Minnesota’s QB2 only played the team’s opening series (where they got stuffed on fourth-and-1 at around the Pittsburgh 10).

Idea for a new preseason-only rule: kickoffs are from the 25. This allows teams to check out kickoff returners. Then again, how many regular season kickoffs are actually going to be returned? It’s almost a running joke on NFL Red Zone to count how many of the opening kickoffs actually get returned.

Teddy Bridgewater is Minnesota’s QB1.

me when the Panthers are gonna lose the preseason game: preseason doesn’t matter
me when the Panthers make a last minute TD and 2-pt conversion to win: heck yeah!

I’ve finally given up on Cam Newton. He’s a great athlete but he will never overcome his bad attitude. He is a crybaby and his emotional highs and lows aren’t conducive to being a good quarterback

I think Newton’s attitude is fine. He has improved that area dramatically. It’s his mechanics that will prevent him from being any better than “above average.” He spoke all off season about working on his bigger issues, like throwing off his back foot. On the play last night where they called DPI on a pass to Benjamin, he did it again, and wasn’t really under a lot of pressure. I think they will be better offensively than last year just because they have more weapons, but I don’t think Newton will ever be an accurate, efficient QB. He’s a dangerous player when the threat of him taking off down the field is there, but the team seems to be trying to protect him by cutting down on those type of plays.

Both he and I went to college in Bowling Green, which hasn’t yet been named “windiest f***ing place on the planet” but should be a finalist. There are a lot of things I miss about that place but wondering if I’m going to get blown into oncoming traffic isn’t one of them.

Kelvin Benjamin tore his ACL in practice
The Panthers season is ruined

Might as well just kill myself now

I’m one of the weird folks who enjoys pre-season games. I like seeing what the newcomers have to offer and nobody plays with more aggressiveness and passion than some guy on the bubble. And every once in a while you see a flash of something special. The pre-season when Victor Cruz joined the Giants, f’rinstance. He glowed like a neon beacon. You just knew that was going to be good. That’s why I watch. For those moments of wonder.

I also like the ‘throw a play up against the wall and see if it sticks’ plays you sometimes see in pre-season. Something totally wild and unexpected that occasionally works, but provides a moment of amusement even if it doesn’t.

As usual, da Bears have managed to have the worst luck in the league, losing their first round draft pick, WR Kevin Smith, to an injury. Likely out for the season. Sigh.

I saw Victor Cruz play quite a few games for UMass, and I can assure you that while he looked good for I-AA ball he was nowhere near a transcendent talent. Joe Flacco didn’t impress me much either, come to think of it. I have no idea what happened with either of them after they signed.

IK Enemkpali lasted less than 24 hours on the waiver wire before Rex Ryan picked him up as a big “FU” to the Jets and Geno Smith. It looks like breaking Geno Smith was the best career move this guy had.

It hurts, but the season isn’t ruined. They don’t have a #1 WR now so they will have to spread it around even more. They aren’t a pass-first team anyway. Still, it sucks because Benjamin was having a really good camp.
