Does a team only get one throwback uniform? There’s only about one chance to wear them per season, they could wear blue-and-white once this season, blue-and-yellow next season, yellow-and-white (found on Wikipedia) the season after that.
On the subject, I’ve never seen the Seahawks wear throwbacks. They were blue-and-silver, with silver helmets, for years.
Yes, they’re limited to one throwback / alternate uniform per season (not including the Color Rush uniform).
Also, a couple of years ago, there was a ruling that players had to wear the same helmet throughout the season, which led the Buccaneers to stop using their throwback uniforms, since they’d require a different helmet color (white vs. pewter).
Thus, the Rams’ throwback uniforms seem to feature a darker blue helmet than they did back when they wore the brighter blue.
But they’ve been having the alternate uniforms for a few seasons now, so the Rams could have used throwbacks from different periods in their history by now. At least, I assume that teams get a whole new set of uniforms made for each season.
Last night’s helmets were definitely white-on-blue, but I saw one where a lot of the white had peeled off. I wonder if they met the one-helmet rule by having some kind of wrap on the their standard helmets.
Also, before the NFL ruled that players had to wear the same helmet throughout the year, on at least one occasion, the Packers wore a brown helmet with their throwbacks, as a reference to leather helmets:
And, yes, it’s safe to assume that players get totally new uniforms every season (if not more often than that). I believe that many teams auction off game-worn gear, for one thing.
It’s far more likely that the equipment team had removed the gold “ram horn” decals, then replaced them with white decals for that game, and that the decals for the “horns” weren’t very good, or that one player got hit in such a way that it damaged the decal. One does occasionally see an NFL player with a dinged-up decal on his helmet (throwback uni or no).
When teams like the Packers or Bears wear their throwbacks, their equipment teams just remove all the decals and stripes, then put new decals back on the helmets the next week.
The Packers were a binary team today. Either very good (turnovers, touchdowns) or very bad (let the Bears march down the field, 3 and out or nearly so). Luckily the ended on a “1” bit…
