NFL Week 17

I didn’t see the game, so I had to look for a clip after your description. It confirms everything you said. The guy should be suspended at least for the playoffs.

That article echoes my thoughts
The step itself was arguably accidental (it definitely wasn’t as egregious as last week) but

  1. He was in no hurry to get off the leg
  2. Suh is known to be “less than appropriately concerned” about hurting other players
Another player I’d be more willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

Brian

What the Hell is going on in Miami? Mike Wallace pulled himself from the game because he didn’t want to play ?

I don’t see how you can give any doubt to that second step. he clearly levers himself up on that foot and lifts his other foot Before walking away… I’m just surprised he didn’t grind his foot back-and-forth.

Does anyone have a link to a full speed video of the step? All I’m seeing are slow motion videos, and that will tend to exaggerate it.

A succesfull on-side freekick by punting!!! Maybe Caldwell reads the SDMB!!!

As a hypothetical, if the Bills had beat the Raiders last week and ended the season with a 10-6 record would they have beaten the Ravens (who also have a 10-6 record) for the last wildcard spot in the playoffs?

As far as I can tell, the Ravens would still be in:

  1. First tiebreaker: head to head. They didn’t play each other this season;
  2. Second tiebreaker for wild-card teams from different divisions: conference record. Baltimore was 6-6 and Buffalo would have been 6-6 if they had won the Oakland game;
  3. Third tiebreaker: record in common games, minimum of four. Common opponents are Miami, Houston, San Diego, Cleveland. Buffalo was 2-3 against these teams, Baltimore was 3-2, Ravens win the tiebreaker.

I could have missed something but that’s how I see your hypothetical turning out.

Okay, I hadn’t realized there had been enough games against common opponents to be used as a tie breaker. I thought it went to “strength of victory” and I had no idea how that was determined.

I have less trouble with problems in celestial mechanics than with figuring out the playoff seeds.

Suh got suspended for 1 game for stepping on Rodgers

Too bad for the Lions, losing Suh for the entirety of the playoffs.*
*Totally stole that from another site.

well, at least they still got a hell of a hockey team

Various web pages with that news have a comment section, and some of the comments defending Suh prove once again that eyewitness testimony is not reliable. I really can’t understand how they can claim it wasn’t intentional.

And FWIW, I’m a Seahawks fan, and I would much rather have Detroit win next week than Dallas.

Here’s the tiebreakers in order:

  1. Head-to-head, if applicable.
  2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
  4. Strength of victory.
  5. Strength of schedule.
  6. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
  7. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
  8. Best net points in conference games.
  9. Best net points in all games.
  10. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  11. Coin toss.
  1. Celestial mechanics.

He was just fucking standing there! Pretending he was watching the play down the field with no idea that he was standing on someone’s leg.

Suh’s suspension is fully deserved. Thing is, if the Lions dump him, someone else will pick him up. The NFL wants this type of player. That’s a problem.

Strength of Victory means you add up the records of all the teams you beat for both teams. If the teams you beat are better than the teams the other guy beat, you have a better strength of victory.

If a coin toss doesn’t work, celestial mechanics will be the least of our worries.

Right. Suh is about 3 years of continuously perfect behavior away from being entitled to any benefit of doubt.
