The Lions had 4 possessions in the fourth quarter. The Iggles’ D was gassed. Seriously, look at the play-by-play. The Eagles’ 4th quarter possessions went: 4-and-out with one designed run; first play pick; three play TD; 3-and-out with one run; kickoff return, clock expired. They held the ball for a total of 5 minutes and 15 seconds in the fourth quarter if my math is right (including the final kickoff return as time expired).
I just saw a headline that Homgren will leave the Browns at the end of the season.
According to this story, “Holmgren will retire at the end of the season but effective immediately he is no longer the executive in charge for first time since joining the Browns, the sources said. [Joe] Banner assumes that responsibility.” That makes it sound like he’s essentially fired.
Joe Banner? He should be be behind the deli counter slicing meat with Rich Kotite!
So, he’s fired and then at the end of the season he’ll retire? Must be nice. He and Heckert have had 3 years and the team has shown no improvement. Shurmur was a monumentally dumb hire, too.
I really don’t think the Browns are *that *far away from being a decent team. It’s just that the positions they need are currently occupied by worst-in-the-league players rather than slightly-below-average players.
I am so depressed I think that I will do yard work on Sundays instead of watching football.
Don’t make him angry. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. Oh, no, wait, that’s his brother Bruce.
In Banner’s first year as VP, he showed his potential at the 1995 draft, when they drafted Mike Mamula…
Can’t say I care much about Holmgren. His hires were very cronyish. Pat Shurmur was a WTF? to everyone in the league - but he was the nephew of fritz Shurmur who was Holmgren’s DC (IIRC) for a number of years, and also they had the same agent. There were IIRC more questionable hires of people who shared Holmgrens agent.
There’s a good chance Heckert, the GM, gets booted too which I don’t want. I think he’s done a pretty solid job.
Correct. Fritz Shurmur was the DC for Holmgren’s Packers when then won Super Bowl XXXI.
I had never heard of this; Googling a bit led me to this.
Imagining those quotes in Tirico’s play-by-play voice is hilarious.
With Andy Reid circling the drain, and Joe Banner coming in, you may have Reid under contract the Monday after the regular season ends… However, if this happens, the Browns will definitely become “better than decent” but will never win the SB…
