NFL Week 6

sob

Also, fuck Mike Missanelli sideways.

Probably not, but I can always lie to myself. Especially not with Alex Mack out for the season - he is another mainstay along with No. 73.

And Da Pack is going to give me a heart attack before long - throwing away the lead and pulling it out with three seconds left. But the Vi-queens got owned, so what the heck - life is good enough for now.

Shodan

There have been six tie games in the last quarter-century (including this one), so, as disappointing as the outcome was, I have to think it must be kind of special to have a one-in-a-thousand-chance experience.

The O line stayed strong even after Mack left yesterday. They really should be 6-2 after this stretch.

Yes.

And then when they’re done playing the league’s worst three teams right in a row and inevitably slide to an 8-8 finish, instead of having the perspective to say “hey, they made strides this year, let’s build on that” the narrative about them is going to be “OMG, they collapsed, how did they suddenly get so bad after they stopped playing shitty teams?” And there will be a hue and cry to bring in Manziel, and all the progress will be lost.

Sorry, hate to pee in your cornflakes. Hope I’m wrong.

They do get Gordon back around that time, so that should be a significant difference maker.

Is there a new rule in punts/returns this year? Almost every punt I’ve seen this year has either been fair caught, or returned for 2 yards. The coverage seems to always be there on time, particularly the gunners. Is there some new restriction on blocking gunners maybe?

Has anyone noticed it? Do the stats back it up?

Eyeballing the stats, it doesn’t seem like they’re down. Going back to 2002, the team leaders in punt returns average less than 4 returns a game. This year, three teams share the lead with 18 returns in 6 games, so 3 a game. Philly is the yardage leader with 280; 13 teams have over 100 return yards. Detroit has 15 returns and 17 fair catches, which reflects the fact that their defense gives up the fewest yards per game.

Seems like a part of the game where it’s better not to screw up rather than going for the gusto.

I guess this should go here: Cowboys RB Joseph Randle charged with shoplifting – allegedly, he tried to sneak out of a Dillards with some underwear and a perfume tester (of, ahem, “Guilty Black”), worth around $120 total.

I mean, I know a half-mil salary is a lot less than that (there has to be some vig to the agent), but, really? Just sad.

Hoyer threw a block that saved a decent loss from a botched toss. I only mention it because it highlights that he’s giving his all, living the dream. He grew up in northeast Ohio and is a life long browns fan. Imagine you get to potentially be the savior of your favorite franchise that’s been awful all of your adult life. That’s some movie shit right there.

He’s surprisingly good in the metrics. 8.21 YPA, the single most important stat that no one seems to care about, is 4th in the league. 97 passer rating, or 75 QBR using ESPN’s new system. He’s not putting up wild total stats because he’s not throwing that many attempts, the Browns ground game is good.

I’m not sure how much is him, and how much is how Kyle Shanahan is a motherfucking sorceror, but if he continues to play like he has, the Browns have to sign him to a 12m+/year a year contract at the end of the year at least.

We paid Derek Anderson for one year of performance, we might as well pay Hoyer.

Snickers and Nike might not like it, but would it really be so bad if Manziel sat the bench for a couple seasons? It didn’t hurt Philip Rivers. Hoyer has been pretty damn good in this offense.

Shoplifting is one of those crimes where, for most people, I don’t get outraged by it. You should definitely be punished for it, but I don’t think you should necessarily condemned for doing it.

Unless you’re a pro athlete or celebrity. That pisses me off.

I think in today’s NFL, almost all QBs would be better off sitting on the bench for a year or two at the start of their careers even if they’re the best quarterback on the team.

Aaron Rodgers is the poster child for letting a QB sit for a while. He sat longer than Rivers, and I think most people would rate him higher than Rivers.

Rivers held out as a rookie. Unsurprising he sat. I hope Brees sends a fruit basket to Rivers’ agent every year.
